STOCKHOLM, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The exhibition of the Chinese Terra-cotta Army here was an enormous success, project organizer Sanne Houby-Nielsen said Sunday.About 320 objects, including terra-cotta warriors from the ancient Chinese Qin Dynasty and other terra-cotta figures from Han Dynasty, were exhibited at the Far Eastern Antiquities Museum during the event, which ended Sunday.Houby-Nielsen, who is director of the museum and also director-general of the country's National Museums of World Culture, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview that the total number of visitors was around 350,000, more than double the expected turnout.This was the highest number of visitors the museum has ever experienced in its history since it was established in the 1940s, said Houby-Nielsen, adding that the exhibition was originally scheduled to end on Jan. 16, but "a great pressure from the audiences" prompted the museum to extend it till Sunday."It is an exhibition which won the most audience for many years in Sweden. We feel particularly happy because it was a very good display of the story of the first emperor and the early Han Dynasty," she said."We felt such a huge interest that we have to prolong it. So we were very grateful that it was possible to prolong the exhibition," she added.The exhibition was declared open by Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf in August. Many of the ancient Chinese artifacts have never been exhibited outside China.Swedish Sinologist Cecelia Lindqvist commented that the event helped people understand the current China by looking at the history of China presented in the exhibition.

BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- There is some part of China that could use additional water -- the drought-hit north, even while the central government is grappling to soak up excess liquidity to contain price hikes.The dry spell has continued for months in the grain production regions in northern China, setting off concerns that it might threaten China's grain output and thus cause food price hikes, a major contributor of the country's inflation in recent months.The bad weather came and may aggravate China's battle on price hikes, including higher interest rates and reserve ratios. The government also introduced price caps and promised increases in supplies to stabilize prices.Meteorological and agricultural experts said it is still too soon to predict a decline in grain output. However, they worried that if the drought continues into the spring, grain output will fall and push up food prices.DRY SPELLWater shortages have been gripping nine provinces since October last year, including the six major wheat producing regions in China -- Shanxi, Shandong, Hebei, Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu -- which contribute more than 80 percent of the country's total wheat output.Further, rainfall in the six provinces averaged only 40.2 millimeters since October last year, down 53 percent compared with previous years, according to the National Climate Center.As of Monday, 60.39 million mu (4.02 million hectares) of crops throughout the nation were plagued by drought, according to the latest statistics from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters."There have been no rains for four months. Both incumbent Laurent Gbagbo and opposition leader Alassane Ouattara claimed victory and swore themselves in as president, and formed their respective government.Gbagbo was backed by the country's Constitutional Council, while Ouattara has the support of the electoral commission and the international community including the United Nations (UN), the AU, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United States and France.China hopes various parties and stakeholders in Cote d’Ivoire can resolve their disputes through dialogues and consultations based on the interest of the country and its people, and maintain peace and stability, Liu said.A peaceful solution to the crisis is not only in the interests of the Ivorian people, but of the West African region as a whole, according to Liu.China appreciates the efforts made by the AU and ECOWAS to find a peaceful solution to the crisis, and will continue supporting Africa’s efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully, Liu said.According to the UN, more than 200 people have died from violence during the power struggle between Gbagbo and Ouattara.The 16th AU summit, to be held under the theme “Towards Great Unity and Integration Through Shared Values,” will gather heads of states and government from member states to discuss issues including Africa’s integration, and peace and security in the continent. GENEVA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Health Ministers from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa met here on Tuesday, to prepare for the BRICS Health Ministerial Meeting which is to be held in Beijing on July 11, 2011.The preparatory discussion was convened on the sidelines of the 64th World Health Assembly, which have gathered health authorities from 193 member states of the World Health Organization (WHO).In a press communique following the discussions, the Health Ministers of the BRICS said that the theme of the Beijing meeting would include, promoting innovation and access to affordable medical products, vaccines and other health technologies, in support of reaching the Millennium Development Goals and addressing other public health challenges.Additional agreement decided that the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health will be held in the Brazilian Capital, Rio de Janeiro, next October, as an important opportunity to discuss the inter-linkages between public health and development, as well as exchange experiences in reducing health inequities within and amongst countries.

BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese currency, or the yuan, rose to a new high of 6.585 against the U.S. dollar Wednesday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.The central parity rate of the RMB, or the yuan, was 10 basis points higher than the previous record of 6.586 set on Feb. 1, the previous trading day.The yuan appreciated 3.6 percent last year, but some analysts predict it could rise further against the dollar this year as the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, attempts to cool accelerating inflation.The PBOC announced Tuesday it would raise the benchmark one-year borrowing and lending rates by 25 basis points from Wednesday.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate each trading day.The central parity rate of the RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of prices before the opening of the market each business day.
