LEAWOOD, Kan. - Walking down the streets, grocery stores, and airports, face coverings are the current reality.For his bar mitzvah project, Leawood Middle School seventh-grader, Jonah Stein, wanted to add a little more to masks."These are MaskerAIDS, they're basically necklaces for your masks," Jonah said. "It's when you're not wearing them, they kind of just hanging down so they're not in the way. But they're also functional when you need them."As he sells his MaskerAIDS, Jonah says all the proceeds benefit Jewish Family Services."At the start of the pandemic, you could just see lines of people trying to get food, just waiting for food to be put in their cars," he said.Jonah, who volunteers at Jewish Family Services, says he wanted to help families in need who are food insecure and going through a difficult time."Jonah is just such a great example of one person making a huge impact," JFS older adult services director, Laura Gilman said.From produce to toiletries and protein, Gilman said she's seen the need grow."We at least doubled during COVID. We're serving over 500 families a month," she said. "And then by the end of this year, we're going to serve about, between October, November, December, about 1,500 households, so that's not individuals, that's households."The MaskerAID proceeds go towards the Kesher KC Bags, which Jonah also helped bring to Kansas City."Someone we know in Minnesota, it was at their synagogue, and I kind of told JFS about it, and they used the idea and went with it," Jonah said. "They are bags that have essentials of, like, heat up meals and food and then they also have some resources.""These bags are a really awesome way for us to create a stopgap for people," Gilman said. "We operate by appointment only because we are a choice and voice pantry."Jonah's goal was to raise ,800 for JFS, but he underestimated himself and his work."It's been amazing," he said. "We've raised ,600 dollars and still climbing for JFS."Thousands of dollars have been raised to help serve families he may never meet."Even though I might not meet them, I know it kind of either brings a smile to their face and it fills their stomach," Jonah said. LAHAINA, Maui (KGTV) - A wildfire put a twist on the Hurricane Lane response in Maui Friday.California resident Victoria Monroe is visiting Lahaina and posted photos to Twitter showing high winds slamming the Maui coastline. She also captured the brush fire moving toward the coast.The fire grew to 300 acres by Friday morning, with reports of structures lost. One woman suffered burns to her hands and legs.10News received an email from San Diego resident Jodi Vachon who owns a home in the fire area."I'm just worried about not only the hurricane but the fire as well. So, it's coming from both ends," said Vachon.Vachon told 10news her home is all right, but she's heard from neighbors in Maui that at least two homes have been lost.She said they're hoping Hurricane Lane will bring some heavy downpours to the burn area.Meanwhile, travelers at San Diego International Airport are prepared for a bumpy ride as they board flights to Honolulu, where the effects of Lane have yet to interfere with flights."I like a little rock and roll," said Dr. George Pratt, a Clinical Psychologist with Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.  He flew to a lead a seminar on the big island of Hawaii on the subject of success.As for a successful flight for nervous fliers, he said, "Meditate. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - The U.S Army Corps of Engineers will begin a remedial search for explosives in the area around U.C. San Diego, which was formerly used as a Marine artillery range.Over the years, munitions and debris have been found in the area though none of them have been live explosives.However, Harry Hendler, the project manager with the Army Corp warns, “there’s always a potential for having some type of risk of explosion or detonation.”The goal of the search is to assess the current risk in undeveloped land. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several hundred people peacefully marched in La Jolla Friday afternoon in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and to protest systemic racism.The group gathered at La Jolla Cove and then walked to Windansea Beach as they held white carnations to signify peace.It wasn't immediately clear how long the protest would be held.The protest is one of several local demonstrations that have been held in San Diego County over the last few weeks. Nationwide, demonstrations have been held, sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis while an officer held his knee on his neck for nearly 10 minutes. 640

Las Vegas police said Monday the MS-13 gang has been responsible for 10 murders in the past year in Southern Nevada. Police said five suspects, including one juvenile, have been arrested in the murders after the last one occurred on March 2. The first one occurred in March of last year. The murders were linked through forensic evidence. The victims died of shooting and stabbing injuries. Six of the 10 victims were kidnapped before police said they were murdered on the outskirts of town. Sheriff Joe Lombardo called the suspects "extremely violent."The discovery of two bodies at Frenchman Mountain within a short period of time helped tip police off after the body was determined to be a MS-13 gang member. The victims have been identified as Daniel Clark, Richard Gaudio, Carlos Pachaca-Rodriguez, Arquimidez Sandoval-Martinez, Juan Carlos Estrada Raya, Jose Hernandez, Ricardo Olivas, Izzak Towery, Earl Ryan and Rony Fuentes.In addition to the ones near Frenchman Mountain, three of the murders occurred near Mount Charleston, while others occurred near Arville Street and Oakey Boulevard, Bonanza and Sandhill roads, Charleston and Nellis boulevards and Charleston Boulevard and Palm Street. 1248
