ZHENGZHOU, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake that hit central China's Henan Province Sunday afternoon levelled 24 houses and left 12 students injured, local officials said early Monday morning.The quake, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale and with a hypocenter depth of 8 kilometers, truck Zhoukou City at 4:58 p.m., according to the China National Seismological Network.Twenty four houses in Taikang County collapsed while 12 students in a middle school were injured, who are currently in hospital.In Fugou County, about 40 houses were reported to have cracks or other damages.Tremor was felt across eastern Henan, including provincial capital Zhengzhou City.

GUANGZHOU, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao lit the Asian Games torch from a specially designed cauldron in Beijing's Temple of Heaven Tuesday morning, marking the official start of the month-long relay for the 16th Asian Games.The torch relay will cover Beijing, Harbin, Changchun, Shandong's Haiyang, and 21 cities in southern Guangdong Province before arriving at the Asian Games opening ceremony in Guangzhou on November 12.Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, has been preparing itself for the games for the past six years, after it won the bid to host the Games in July 2004.The construction of the venues and the Asian Games Village has been completed. GUANGZHOU, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Floods, landslides and heavy downpours brought by typhoon Fanapi had claimed 55 lives in south China's Guangdong Province, while another 42 were still missing, local authorities said Thursday.Meanwhile, more than 1.26 million people were affected and 98,000 in low-lying areas were forced to be evacuated, a spokesman with the provincial civil affairs department said.Rainstorms and and geological disasters had destroyed more than 4,200 homes and inundated more than 48,700 hectares of cropland, the spokesman said.Direct economic losses were estimated at more than 2 billion yuan (300 million U.S. dollars), he said.Tonnes of relief supplies, such as tents, clothes, quilts, bottled water and rice, have been dispatched to the disaster-hit areas.Helicopters were used Thursday to airdrop relief materials to victims.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.No casualties have been reported in Fujian.

BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation in China, is likely to rise 4.1 percent in October after accelerating to a 23-month high of 3.6 percent in September, the Bank of Communications forecast on Wednesday.The bank, China's fifth largest lender, said in a report that the index would see moderate dips in the coming two months amid decreasing demand due to the slowing economy.But oversupply of liquidity at home, surging food prices, rising labor costs, and pressures caused by imported inflation would mean very limited room for the index to drop, the report said.The report predicts China's CPI would rise 3.1 percent for the entire year of 2010, topping the government's target to keep the inflation rate under 3 percent.It also forecast food prices would rise further during the first half of 2011.Food prices, which account for one-third of weighting in calculating the CPI in China, climbed 8 percent in September, pushing the CPI to the highest level in nearly two years. Food prices had risen 7.5 percent in August, 6.8 percent in July, and 5.7 percent in June.
