The helicopters were having a hard time fighting the fire let alone airlifting patients," Huber said.Because Skinner was having a high-risk pregnancy after suffering two miscarriages and other complications related to an inherited disorder, Huber said she may not have made it if she went into full-blown labor.He arranged a caravan that included three police vehicles to rush Skinner to an ambulance. Then he jumped in the back seat, where he kept her calm until she reached a hospital where her labor was stopped."He was sweet. He told me, 'I'm a guy. I don't know what this feels like for you, but I'll try to help you get you through it,' " Skinner said. "Then he would yell at people outside of the car, waving his hat and telling them to get out of the way.""My goal was to keep her breathing and get her down the hill," Huber said. "Two of my ambulance crews were trapped by the fire moments before I got to Anastasia so there was a lot of doubt, a lot of worry."Skinner said a doctor later told her smoke inhalation put her body under stress and triggered the contractions.On Dec. 12, more than a month after the fire began, Skinner gave birth via C-section to a full-term, healthy girl and named her after the man she believes saved her life."She's a blessing in every way including what happened at the Camp Fire," she said about her daughter, Zoele (rhymes with Noel) Mickey Skinner.Skinner and her husband, Daniel, have three other children, ages 8, 6 and 4.After getting Skinner to the ambulance, Huber helped with the mass evacuation until the next day. Marianna Cisneros was participating in fitness competitions and in the best shape of her life at the end of 2019. She tested positive for coronavirus July 20, 2020 and since then, has gone from the best shape to the worst, showing that the virus can impact anyone, even someone young and healthy like herself.She said the first couple weeks of her sickness were mild, then in the third week, her symptoms got worse. She lost feeling in her right side, couldn’t walk and spent six days in the hospital. Now, three months after testing positive, and she still has not recovered.“You can’t even get out of bed. There are times when I am crawling to the bathroom to try to take a shower,” she said.The mom of three said she doesn’t have the strength to pick her four-year-old up now, and also has not been able to return to work. She doesn’t know when she’ll have the strength to keep up with the physically demanding job of an ICU nurse.“Even I, at the beginning of this, was thinking even if I caught COVID, I’ll be fine. Here I am months later and I am not fine. We don’t know what the future holds for me. If this is permanent, if I’ll be able to go back to work as a nurse. The future is really uncertain,” she said.Cisneros said her husband has been a stay at home dad for almost five years and is now looking for a job to compensate for the loss of her work. His path to the fire department was paved by members of an organization called Brothers United, a group of African American firefighters in San Diego."I started taking some classes, met some other firefighters, got a mentor and then here I am 20 years later," Shanely said.His passion for what he does and desire to share it made him a perfect fit when the department created the full time recruiting position four years ago."As a department, we really wanted to focus more specifically on and make an actual effort to recruit more diversity into our fire department," he explained.Captain Shanley says some of the biggest obstacles are simply educating people on what it takes to become a firefighter.
