The holiday shopping season got off to a hot start on Friday as consumers flooded into stores and logged onto e-commerce sites in search of deals.Real-time figures from Mastercard show that overall sales are poised to hit billion on Black Friday alone. That's up about 9% from the day after Thanksgiving last year.Mastercard projects that overall holiday sales from November 1 through Christmas Eve should grow by 5% this year."We've gotten off to a very good start," said Steve Sadove, Mastercard senior advisor. "Both online and in-store sales are both tracking very well."More and more Black Friday shoppers are turning online to score discounts and deals.Adobe, which tracks online sales, reported that online purchases were up nearly 28% in the early hours of Friday morning.Very cold weather in the Northeast might be helping online sales growth on Friday, Mastercard's Sadove said.Electronics are a hot sellers. Adobe reported that the Nintendo Switch is the most popular item online, and Sadove said the new line of digital assistants and smart home products are attracting buyers. The strong holiday sales are being fueled in part by a healthy economy, which features low unemployment and some gains in average income. High levels of consumer confidence also help.In addition, the calendar is favorable for a strong holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving came earlier this year, and Christmas falls on a Tuesday. That schedule is expected to result in Sunday December 23 sales that match Black Friday sales figures.Without Toys "R" Us, which went out of business this past year, many retailers are looking for a toy boost.Sadove refers to as a "land grab" of retailers trying to up their toy offerings as a way to attract shoppers.Beyond the leaders - Walmart, Target and Amazon - Best Buy is also making a major push to sell toys. And grocer Kroger's is offering toys using the old Toys "R" Us Geoffrey the giraffe mascot with its "Geoffrey's Toy Box." 1972

The Great Bambino, the King of Rock and Roll, and the former leader of "America's Team" are among those set to receive the highest honor that a president can bestow on a civilian. The White House announced Saturday that President Donald Trump will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to seven people next week. The list, which names three posthumous recipients, includes sports and entertainment legends such as Babe Ruth and Elvis Presley as well as political and charitable luminaries such as philanthropist Miriam Adelson, Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch and the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.Adelson, the wife of billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, is cited by the White House for founding research centers committed to fighting substance abuse and, with her husband, establishing the Adelson Medical Research Foundation, which supports research on life-threatening illness. She has also supported Jewish schools, Holocaust memorial organizations, and Israeli military personnel and veterans, the White House noted. The Adelsons were among the Republican Party's largest benefactors this midterm election, donating a whopping 2 million to GOP super PACs through September. The White House also lauded the accomplishments of Hatch, one of the longest-serving senators in US history, citing his four decades of legislative accomplishments and his leadership on judicial confirmations.Scalia, a conservative judicial icon, was cited by the White House for "insisting that the role of federal judges is to uphold the original meaning of the Constitution — never to impose their own beliefs on the country."The news release praised Presley as a musical icon who defined American culture to adoring fans around the world and "fused gospel, country, and rhythm and blues to create a sound all his own, selling more than a billion records." It also noted his two years of Army service.Ruth, meanwhile, is celebrated for setting baseball records that lasted for decades, creating the Babe Ruth Foundation, which sought to help underprivileged children, and for raising money for the war effort during World War II. "His legacy has never been eclipsed, and he remains the personification of 'America's Pastime,' the White House said. Two football Hall of Famers are also among the honorees: former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, who also volunteered to fight in the Vietnam War and later became a businessman and champion of charitable causes such as the United Way; and defensive tackle Alan Page, who would later go on to become the first African American to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court. The Medal of Freedom is awarded to those who have made "especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the country, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors," the White House said. This is the first time Trump is presenting the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor, as recently as October. 3061

The Indianapolis 500 will be held without fans in attendance on Aug. 23 due to escalating concerns over the coronavirus pandemic in Marion County, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced Tuesday. It will mark the first time in the 109-year history of the Indy 500 that it will be run in front of empty stands at the 2.5-mile oval track.“As dedicated as we were to running the race this year with 25 percent attendance at our large outdoor facility, even with meaningful and careful precautions implemented by the city and state, the COVID-19 trends in Marion County and Indiana have worsened," a news release from IMS said.First held in 1911, the Indianapolis 500 is the largest single-day sporting event in the world with approximately 350,000 people annually packing the track's grandstands and infield to watch "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." Running the race without fans prevents the seventh cancellation in Indy 500 history. The race was not held in 1917-18 during World War I, and from 1942-45 during World War II.In late March, IMS leaders rescheduled the race from May 24 to Aug. 23. Officials said on June 26 that Indy 500 attendance would be limited to no more than 50%.That number was further decreased on July 22 when plans were scaled back to host the race at 25% capacity. Face coverings would be required, and the Speedway released an 88-page health and safety plan that provided guidelines and protocols for how the race would be run in 2020.Even at 25% capacity, the race would have been the largest event held in the United States since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.IndyCar and IMS owner Roger Penske previously said he wouldn't run the race without fans, but the realities of the pandemic prevailed.“We need to be safe and smart about this,” Penske told the Associated Press. “Obviously we want full attendance, but we don’t want to jeopardize the health and safety of our fans and the community. We also don’t want to jeopardize the ability to hold a successful race.”In a news release, IMS said in the weeks since the June 26 announcement of 50% capacity, the number of COVID-19 cases in Marion County has tripled while the positivity rate has doubled."We said from the beginning of the pandemic we would put the health and safety of our community first, and while hosting spectators at limited capacity with our robust plan in place was appropriate in late June, it is not the right path forward based on the current environment," the release said. How fans will be impactedThe announcement of no fans on race day also means all on-track activity during the month of August, including practice and qualifications, will be closed to the public. The first practice will take place on Aug. 12.Fans who still have tickets to the 2020 Indy 500 will be credited for the 2021 race and retain their seniority and originally assigned seats.Additionally, as announced in July, the race will be broadcast live on TV in Central Indiana for the first time since 2016.State and city leaders react to Speedway's decisionIndiana Gov. Eric Holcomb issued a statement following the announcement thanking Penske and IMS leadership and encouraging Hoosiers to do what they can to prevent the spread of COVID-19. 3239
