SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For comic, movie, and science-fiction fanatics, getting to Comic-Con is a dream come true.For one San Diego military family, it was extra special because experiencing it as a family was never guaranteed. "I actually brought Mason and Annabelle when he was on deployment to Syria, and he was kind of bummed he wasn't coming," said Lindsey Stacy, referring to her husband Kenton.It was on that deployment when Kenton, a Navy EOD Tech, was critically injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). He was given just a two percent chance of survival but ultimately overcame the odds. "He's just made so many miraculous recoveries, and I'm praying there's more to come," said Lindsey.While Kenton's story has inspired thousands around the world, few know of his love for all things cartoons and superheroes. Their firstborn Logan was named after X-Men's Wolverine. "I always said he's this big tough guy but he's like a comic book and Star Wars nerd underneath!"So Lindsey put out the call for help to bring Kenton to Comic-Con."People were just so willing to help make this dream come true for Kenton," she said. Both Comic-Con International and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund stepped up to provide the family and Kenton's caregivers with four-day badges. The convention says it's dedicated to serving people of all abilities; providing a rest area, loaning out wheelchairs, and providing volunteer sign language interpreters for deaf guests. "Things are different now, and we can't be out as long, and we just tailor it to his needs, but we're just so happy to be here and have him home with us and be able to actually just reintegrate our lives back together again," said Lindsey. "I would say to us, he's our superhero." 1751

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For 250,000 low-income children in San Diego County, a healthy breakfast and lunch are provided by their schools. In most cases, that stops during the summer, and now more than ever, that's a problem."For all too many San Diego children, summertime brings about hunger," says Vince Hall. Hall is the CEO of Feeding San Diego, and this is where his organization steps in partnering with the state's Pandemic EBT program. This summer, each eligible child receives a one-time payment of 5 for groceries from the State of California. And for a school like Lexington Elementary in El Cajon, this program is a necessity. "98% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged," says Lesley Ezop. Ezop is the interim principal at Lexington Elementary. It's one of 11 food distribution points that Feeding San Diego partners with to offer children much needed nutrition throughout the summer."Just so that kids can have the basics so that they can learn and can function," adds Ezop. "When kids have what they need, they're going to succeed, right?" But the program doesn't stop there. The children aren't the only ones facing hunger. Feeding San Diego knows if the student needs food assistance, then the entire family needs it. So the organization partners with local schools to provide meals for the whole family. "If we provide food to youth and not to the adults, that food is just going to be divided, and the effect of our initiative is going to be diminished," says Hall. The county may something a little extra for your wallet.The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office says they currently have 3,000 in unclaimed county refunds waiting to be reunited with their rightful owners.About 1,928 refunds sit on the countywide unclaimed money and unclaimed property tax refunds lists, according to the office. If the county thinks you're owed a refund, you may receive a postcard in the mail, according to San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.“Most of the time, we’re collecting money from San Diegans,” said McAllister. “We love summer when we can give it back and put a little extra vacation cash in people’s pockets. I feel like Robin Hood.”Over the last five years, the office says it has refunded nearly 0,000 to residents.According to the county, the smallest refund amount available is and the largest refund amount is ,333.79, owed to the heirs of Mary Stone. "In the past, sadly, most refunds were never claimed," McAllister said. "So we’re trying a new strategy to let people know about this money.
