LARGO, Fla. — The family of Linus Phillip, a man killed by a Largo Police officer in Florida on Friday, is accusing detectives of using the dead man's finger to gain access to his cell phone.On Friday, police approached Phillip's car at a WaWa gas station in Clearwater. Police said the vehicle he was driving had illegally tinted windows. While standing near Phillip's car, the officers claim they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Police claim Phillip tried to drive away and use his car as a deadly weapon. One officer, Matthew Steiner, says he was dragged by the car when he tried to open the door and feared for his life.Phillip was shot and killed by police. He did not have a gun in his possession. Steiner, a seven year veteran with no disciplinary action against him, was injured during the incident but is OK.Phillip's family is demanding surveillance video from the incident at the WaWa gas station in Clearwater where he was killed. Police claim the encounter was not caught on video, only officers giving Phillip CPR.The family lawyer, John Trevena was surprised."There was no denial of the video to the family so this is the first I've heard of that," said Trevena.The family also claims that detectives used Phillip's lifeless finger to access his phone at the Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home."So they are allowed to pull him out of the refrigerator and use a dead mans finger to get to his phone. Its disgusting," said Armstrong.Police did not comment on the allegations, citing that there is a still an active investigation into the case.Phillip's mother, Martha Hicks started crying during an interview on Wednesday."They killed him after his 30th birthday. Oh god, he turned 30 on March 11," Hicks said. "It's too much too much we just want to know what happened."The couple has two children together. Their young daughter lost her battle with leukemia last year.Their son, Isaac is 16 months old."My son is no longer going to go have a father, or to make his dad proud. (KGTV) - A woman in Lakeside has set up a cabinet full of "Goodies to Share" for homeless people living near Cactus Park.Barbara DeYoung says she got the idea from the "Little Free Libraries" she sees in her neighbors' yards."You just go very freely and get something. It's just people sharing with you," she says. "It's a very nice feeling, and I thought for sure they would love that."She set up the cabinet near the San Vincente Creek that runs behind Cactus Park, an area where several homeless people have set up encampments."I felt these are wonderful human beings. But they have problems. They have situations they can't control," DeYoung explains. "But they can read a book in the evening. They can play games, whatever they need to do."Rather than filling the cabinet with food, DeYoung stocks it with comfort items like books, blankets, wipes, playing cards, and other things that aren't usually available to homeless people at shelters or service offices.DeYoung says it's about feeding their souls and showing them respect and love, rather than just handing them food.The cabinet has already become a hit. DeYoung had to restock it just a few days after she first set it up. And just a few minutes after she refilled the cabinet, our cameras caught a man coming up from the creek bed to grab some wipes out of it.He asked not to be identified but says it feels good to know that people care.Meanwhile, DeYoung doesn't believe it will attract more homeless people to the area, but it will make life more bearable for the ones already there."I don't think boxes of raisins are going to bring armies of people here," she says. LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) — Parents in Lemon Grove School District pulled their students from class Tuesday to protest against decisions being made, they say, without parent input. In March, 10News covered an emotional Lemon Grove school board meeting when parents fought to retain 16 teachers who had been designated for non-re-election. Those teachers chose to resign rather than have the designation placed on their permanent teaching records. The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Tuesday night, and parents plan to show up again to voice their complaints about the district, ranging from curriculum decisions, resource scarcity and student safety. One parent told 10News behavior issues are increasing in classrooms and the administration is failing to hold students accountable. A decline in classroom resources led her to pull one of her children from the district and enroll him in charter school. Several other parents at the rally say they have done the same, or are considering doing so, due to a variety of complaints. "We are not getting the basic resources and they are making decisions that don't make sense," says Rosa Carney.
