Ali Schroer was on board when her doctor told her she could save hundreds of dollars a month on her allergy medication by ordering it online. “I was a new professional and just trying to save some money, because it was so expensive,” Schroer says. She ordered the prescription on a website that claimed to be an online Canadian pharmacy. “It looked exactly like what I had been taking for years and years, and so, I really didn't think anything of it,” she says. But in a few weeks, she started to feel strange. “I had stomach pains and headaches and kind of achiness,” she recalls. “I would go almost into shock, like I would really get clammy and hot and get like these fever spikes.”When she told a family member about the medication she got online, they did some research and found the site had a reputation for selling counterfeit drugs. Schroer says she threw the medication away, and in within weeks, she felt completely better. Her story is a cautionary tale of the dangers of purchasing medications online. The FDA recently issued a warning letter about the Canadian drug distributor CanaRx, saying it supplied "unapproved" and "misbranded" drugs to consumers in the United States. “If you order medicines online and think they're getting them from Canada, they're probably not coming from Canada,” says Dr. Carmen Catizone, executive director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. “If you walk into a pharmacy in Canada, then those are medications that are safe enough that are approved by Canada.” An attorney for the company says CanaRx only facilitates the sale of drugs by American pharmaceutical companies licensed by the FDA in original packaging. However, Dr. Catizone says because the U.S. can't regulate drugs from other countries, it's hard to know exactly where drugs you buy online come from. “If something sounds too good to be true, it's probably too good to be true for something that's licensed for a site, where you can get information from a state agency or federal government about,” Dr. Catizone explains. As for Schroer, she has decided to stop online shopping for her prescriptions.“You just don't know enough about where it comes from,” Schroer says. 2210

Nevada Gov. Sisolak has announced a new mandate requiring face masks to be worn in public starting on June 26.Casino operators in the state were quick to applaud the governor's actions in this matter.MGM Resorts International Acting CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle released the following statement in response to Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak’s announcement that masks would be required for indoor public places:“Given the public health situation and the reports of new cases, we support the Governor’s decision to require masks in public places and will begin to enforce according to his guidelines. At MGM Resorts, we have put health and safety at the center of all we do, and this will be a modification of protections that make up our multi-layered Seven-Point Safety Plan.”RELATED: Gov. Steve Sisolak mandates Nevadans to wear face coverings in public spacesMGM also updated their guest policy nationwide, "Guests and visitors inside public spaces will be required to wear masks at all MGM Resorts properties throughout the United States."Wynn Las Vegas released the following statement:"We applaud Governor Sisolak in his decision to require face coverings for everyone in public, including those visiting a resort. It is a demonstration of his commitment, shared by all of us, to keep visitors to Las Vegas safe, as well as our employees and local community. Mandatory face coverings have had no impact on the ability of our employees to deliver great guest experiences Similarly, we believe face coverings will not diminish the unique experiences only Las Vegas can offer visitors."Earlier in the day Caesars Entertainment came out with its own face mask policy and made this statement:“We promised that Caesars would continue to evaluate the latest recommendations, directives and medical science regarding the COVID-19 public health emergency and modify our enhanced health and safety protocols accordingly,” said Tony Rodio, CEO of Caesars Entertainment. “As a result, we are immediately requiring everyone in our properties to wear masks, because the scientific evidence strongly suggests that wearing masks and practicing social distancing may be the most important deterrents to spreading COVID-19 from person to person,” he added.READ GOV. RICHMOND, Va. -- A 5.1 magnitude earthquake rattled parts of Virginia and North Carolina Sunday morning. There have been no immediate reports of damage, nor injuries. The earthquake was recorded at 8:07 a.m. and was centered near the state line in Sparta, North Carolina, about 300 miles southwest of Richmond.Sunday's earthquake is one of the biggest to impact Virginia since the 5.8-magnitude earthquake centered in Mineral, Virginia on August 23, 2011. And the largest earthquake in North Carolina since a 5.2 earthquake in 1916."According to the U.S. Geological Survey database, the 5.1 magnitude earthquake near Sparta this morning is the second strongest earthquake to occur in North Carolina 1900," the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg Office wrote on Twitter. "The strongest was a 5.2 magnitude earthquake near Skyland, North Carolina in February 1916."The 5.1 magnitude earthquake was preceded by multiple, smaller "foreshocks" on Saturday.Multiple aftershocks are expected over the next few weeks. The USGS forecasted a 4 percent chance of one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 5.1.This story originally reported by Mike Stone on wtvr.com. 1203

It's no secret that voting in this year's election is entirely different from what we've done in years past. With that, there are many concerns about mail-in ballots, and whether or not they favor one political party over another.Bakersfield College political science professor Allen Bolar says the rumor has always been that mail-in voting favors Democrats. He says that rumor hasn't historically been true, until now."The Republican party is gonna be sending mail-in voter ballot applications to its voters, but on the other hand, the top of its ticket is saying that you can't trust the mail-in voting," Bolar said. This year, votes received by mail will likely be more skewed favoring democrats, Bolar said. The professor explaining that mostly has to do with the rhetoric coming from the White House for months, denouncing the mail-in vote system's integrity."You have tremendous potential for fraud and abuse," President Donald Trump said about mail-voting this summer.Bolar says some Republicans, heading President Trump's words, may avoid casting their vote via mail. Meanwhile, Democrats are expected to be turning out in higher numbers. Democrats have cast about 51% of the early votes, according to a predictive analysis by the data firm TargetSmart, which uses voter data to project turnout trends. That's compared with 38% by Republicans. Bolar says republicans will mostly vote in other ways, like at the poll on election day."Many Republican voters are die-hard Republican voters. They're going to show, and do whatever they need to do," he said.Bolar says the one advantage that may come out of this for Democrats, is that when a party's base votes early, it allows the party to focus their campaign calls and mailers on a smaller set of people who haven't voted."Whereas the Republican party is going to have to keep worrying about its whole set of voters, or at least a large number of them, and its efforts are going to be a little harder to concentrate," he said. As activists march through cities across the country, some protests that started off peaceful have ultimately ended in violence and looting. Now, more businesses have taken notice and are taking action. “These are the boards we have here,” said Joe Quintana who works at a souvenir shop in downtown Denver. After several neighboring businesses were broken into, Quintana’s boss decided to board up his business. “It takes time and more money to do this but trying to keep the safety out here,” he said. Construction crews are now working around the clock, protecting properties with plywood. “It can be hectic having to put this stuff up on a regular basis,” said handyman Jeffrey Berlin, who is reluctantly cashing in on the chaos. After being out of work for months due to COVID-19 concerns, Berlin is taking whatever jobs he can get, including boarding up buildings like Starbucks coffee shops. “I’d like to have a lot more (work) but I don’t want to get it under these circumstances,” he said. These circumstances have caused more businesses to board up their properties including some that recently reopened during this pandemic. “We’re just trying to stay safe because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Cody Kluck, who manages Osteria Marco. Just days after coronavirus restrictions were lifted, Kluck had to board up in fear of looters. “It’s like a false sense of security,” he said. “But I mean it will keep hopefully a brick or something from going through a window and people coming into our restaurant.”As protesters continue to call for social change across the country, others are now asking activists to alter their tactics saying protests should be done peacefully. 1708
