DENVER, Colo. – Amanda Dufresne Lee is a sexual assault survivor. “I was on my daily run training for my first half marathon when I was attacked, beaten and attacked by a stranger,” Dufresne Lee said. It happened in August of 2003. She was a college student in Waco, Texas. While she was running, something hit her head from behind and she fell to the ground. “Then I turned to put my hand up thinking someone would help me up,” said Dufresne Lee. “And instead he picked me up by my throat.” Nearly two decades later, her memory of the traumatic experience unfortunately hasn’t faded. “I narrowly escaped with my life by rolling myself over a small cliff and running half-clothed to safety,” Dufresne Lee said. “I like to say that was the easy part, and everything following that was an absolute nightmare.” Dufresne Lee had PTSD so severe she became an insomniac, and it took her years to feel safe again. “I struggled to go to parking lots, because I felt like strangers were going to attack me,” Dufresne Lee said. However, she says there is part of her story she looks back on in a positive way. “I had two incredible nurses who were empathetic and warm and kind and patient who were there for me in absence of family or friends,” she said. Following her assault, Dufresne Lee was treated by a specific type of forensic nurse, known as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – SANE for short. “A lot of people don’t know what they’re allowed to receive, what they can receive, what they can ask for. That’s the best part about being a SANE nurse is giving my patients that choice and that right back. And letting them know what is available to them,” UCHealth SANE nurse Tammy Scarlett said. Tammy Scarlett has been a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for nearly five years. She currently works at UCHealth Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She says she treats both men and women of all ages, but a majority of her patients are adult women. The exam varies depending on each situation. First, they address any medical concerns, and then they go through a history of what happened. Following that, the lengthy and intimate exam starts. “That’s where we check out any genitalia making sure there’s no injury. We can collect evidence, and we can do photo documentation as well,” Scarlett said. Dufresne Lee says the exam took even longer for her because her body kept going into shock, and she’d start violently shaking all over. "It’s incredibly invasive. Many women – myself included – describe it as being re-traumatized because they are combing through everything looking for evidence,” Dufresne Lee said. However, that evidence is necessary to find the offender and get justice. SANE nurses are able to provide one-on-one care. LAPLACE, La. – On a cool, overcast day, the sounds of an unfolding uprising pierced the quiet of a winding country road in rural Louisiana. “Freedom or death,” the crowd chants. “We want our freedom!” This is a reenactment of the largest slave rebellion ever seen in the U.S. In 1811, along the Mississippi River in Louisiana, hundreds of slaves gathered in the “German Coast Uprising.” They headed to New Orleans marching 26 miles towards the city, with huge goals. “They wanted to seize all of Orleans territory and set up an African republic in the new world. It would've been a sanctuary for Africans and people of African descent. It was the most radical vision of freedom in the history of this country,” said New York City artist Dread Scott, who organized the reenactment. Part community performance, part documented art project, the reenactors marched 26 miles on Friday and Saturday, retracing the rebellion’s steps and trying to bring attention to a part of history virtually unheard of – both back in 1811 and now. “Reenacting the slave rebellion has everything to do with excavating this history, so people know the history, but also people thinking about how we get free today,” Scott said. Jordan Rome came down from Chicago to participate in it. She is one the of reenactment’s trainers, teaching participants how to move, act and speak for the event. “I think people are really thirsty for that knowledge – for our history to present itself in a more nuanced way, not so black and white,” Rome said. Blake Gilpin is an associate professor of history at Tulane University. He’s taught his students about the German Coast Uprising, some of whom were initially unaware of it. “The German Coast Uprising is probably has a better claim to the most fully realized slave rebellion in American history – as in the one that came closest to succeeding,” he said. The uprising was eventually stopped – militias and law enforcement intercepted them before they reached New Orleans. The rebellion’s leaders were beheaded, with their heads placed on spikes, spread up and down the Mississippi River as a warning to other slaves. Gilpin said it’s a part of history getting a second look, along with the fight over whether to remove Confederate monuments across the South. New Orleans removed several in 2017. “I think it's that's the whole thing about these histories being kept very separate. You know the Confederacy has been sort of washed clean of the thing that it was actually fighting for, which was to keep enslaving human beings,” Gilpin said. “That trying to connect those things actually makes us understand everybody involved so much better.” It is a renewed look at the past in the present, as history marches on. “People are reexamining history and it's actually, you know, sort of a movement from below,” Scott said, “and that's a really good thing.”For more information on the slave rebellion reenactment, 2939

A Louisville police officer under investigation in the Breonna Taylor case penned an early-morning email to about 1,000 fellow officers Tuesday in which he claimed Louisville's mayor and police chief "failed" the department, and accused the FBI of enforcing civil rights violations. She then asked her son to drive her to the Motor City to vote.“Vote, but know who you are voting for and why.”That’s the message Mildred Madison has for our viewers. Mrs. Madison has never missed the chance to vote, in any election, since she was 21.She was married at the age of 22 and has four kids, but that never slowed her down.In fact, she spent her life devoted to improving the community from being a PTA volunteer at her children’s school, all the way to becoming the President of the League of Women Voters of Cleveland and Detroit.She even ran for office herself.“When I found out my councilman was not doing what he was supposed to do, I ran against him and I became a councilperson.”In 2006, she worked with Wayne County and Detroit City Clerks to help improve the absentee ballot process.She says civic engagement is a must.“Women, especially black women, were the last ones that got the power to vote.”Mrs. Madison asked her son to drive her to the Coleman Young Municipal Center in Detroit to vote Monday. On his urban farm, Sean Conway is doing more than cultivating his next crop. He's helping grow the next generation of farmers. Conway is a mentor at the GoFarm incubator program, which pairs young farmers with established ones. “I wish that there was like an incubator program available to me in the Denver area at the time, because it would have helped me out a lot,” Conway says. After seven years of farming, Conway says he struggled at first. “I didn't really have enough experience to start farming on my own, so I made a lot of mistakes,” he admits. Now, the GoFarm incubator program is making sure these apprentices don't make the same mistakes Conway did. The program is a mix of hands-on training and classroom work, creating a path to farm ownership. “Two percent of the U.S. population is actually in an agricultural career, which is pretty crazy, so trying to increase the amount of farmers we have will affect the entire community,” says Natalie Fioretti with GoFarm. Apprentice Shelby Johnson knew she wanted to be a farmer, but had no idea where to begin.“The odds are really, really stacked against young farmers in a lot of ways, and especially as a young, queer woman of color from the south, it's like quadra stacked against me,” Johnson says. Johnson says thanks to GoFarm, she has resources and opportunities to network, while learning from older farmers.There are farming training programs like GoFarm across the country.
