EAST FREEHOLD, N.J. — A 3.1 magnitude earthquake was detected Wednesday morning in the Central New Jersey town of Freehold, according to the United States Geological Survey.The USGS detected the quake around 2 a.m. while the National Weather Service referred to the quake as a "small tremor" despite that it was felt in much of Central Jersey.The depth of the quake was reported as about 3.1 miles. There are no reports yet of any damage or injuries due to the earthquake.Hundreds of reports were coming in from as far as Philadelphia and Long Island, New York on the USGS' "Did You Feel It?" map.Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said that about 125 non-emergency and 911 calls came in from residents who reported feeling and hearing the quake.Twitter user @BWf34, in Freehold, said it "felt like an explosion, then shaking. No obvious damage to house. Woke up the entire family."Twitter user @arorasa, in East Windsor, said the "whole house shook. It's been an hour now, but still feeling rattled."Geophysicist Robert Sanders from the USGS said that a 3.1 quake is unlikely to have caused anything more than damaged shelves or falling picture frames.He said there had been just two other quakes over 3.0 magnitude in the area since 1970.The last recorded earthquake in New Jersey before Wednesday was a 1.7 magnitude quake on Aug. 17 in Milford, New Jersey, according to the Northeast States Emergency Consortium.The strongest quake with an epicenter in New Jersey was a magnitude 4.8 earthquake back on Aug. 23, 1938, near Trenton.This story was originally published by Stephen M. Dramatic moments in a San Bernardino courtroom today as a prosecutor slammed a sledgehammer onto a table. He was simulating what he says is how a Fallbrook family of four was murdered in 2010. Charles Merritt is accused of killing his business partner, Joseph McStay, his wife Summer and their two young sons Giani and Joe Jr. The prosecution says Merritt was being sidelined from the business and owed thousands of dollars to McStay. The defense countered in their closing arguments that the prosecution focused on trying Merritt’s character and not the actual facts of the murder. The defense told jurors the circumstantial case produced no evidence tying their client to the family’s violent deaths. The prosecution told jurors they didn’t have to prove how, where or when the murders took place, only that Merritt committed them. The McStays disappeared from their Fallbrook home in early February 2010. Days after they were last seen, the family’s SUV was found abandoned at a strip mall parking lot in San Ysidro.In 2013, the bodies of the family members were found in the Mojave Desert, near Victorville. Prosecutors said the family died from blunt-force trauma to their heads. Authorities found a sledgehammer, believed to be the murder weapon, in one of the graves.Merritt was arrested in connection with the killings in November 2014 after sufficient evidence linking him to the case, including DNA, was discovered.Authorities alleged Merritt killed the family members inside their home and then buried them in the desert. Merritt also tried to paint over the crime scene, according to authorities.Merritt, 61, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and is being held without bail.Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case. 1758

(KGTV) - A 13-year-old girl cried during her testimony Wednesday against the man accused of chasing her with machetes in La Mesa.The preliminary hearing started at the El Cajon Courthouse Wednesday morning for Bernard Graham, accused of the violent confrontation at Fletcher Parkway and Amaya Drive in May.The girl’s mother told 10News her daughter stopped to meet a friend on her way to Parkway Middle School, but noticed a man talking and yelling to himself. The man first threw a closed pocket knife at the girl before pulling machetes out of his pants, Tammy Brown said.According to La Mesa Police, Graham threw knives at the girl and chased her until she ran into a Subway sandwich shop to call 911. She was not hurt.RELATED: Officer-involved shooting reported in La MesaOfficers found Graham on Fletcher Parkway and tried to arrest him. Graham refused to drop the knife, police said, and officers fired at least two shots.Graham suffered a bullet wound to the abdomen and was taken to the hospital. A judge will decide whether Graham should stand trial at the end of the preliminary hearing. 1132
