It's been a roller coaster year for amusement parks across the country, with crowds or long lines this year because of COVID-19. Most theme parks that were able to reopen did so with guests' safety in mind."This fall is a unique time for us as families are dealing with coming out of the pandemic and what can they do, and certainly it's not over. Everybody is still very concerned about health and safety and looking to the attractions industry is a great place," said Susan Storey, the Global Communications Director for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA).Storey says most theme parks across the country are mandating masks and not allowing as many people into the parks."They’re very good at managing how many people can be in a line, to how many people would be in a restaurant," Storey said. "We’re experts at moving people around and being able to provide a safe, healthy, fun experience."Storey says most theme parks are outside on large properties, giving people the ability to spread out."Technology has come into play, too. You can buy your tickets online and show them with your phone. You can do mobile ordering with food, so you’re not standing in line. You can just order, go and pick it up," Storey said. "So, there’s a lot of things that the industry has immediately implemented and added to take their already safe and fun environment."Six Flags over Georgia has fully decorated for Halloween, hoping to encourage families to visit "HalloFest" this fall."Right now, we have reduced capacity, so we are operating at a far lower level at the park than you’d typically see, and that’s so we can ensure social distancing," said Divina Mims, the Communications Manager at Six Flags over Georgia and Whitewater.Six Flags is also conducting daily temperature checks on employees and guests and conducting contactless bag checks. Every other row on a ride is empty, allowing for social distancing even on roller coasters.Hershey Park in Pennsylvania is limiting capacity through an online reservation system."We've also added 300 hand sanitizers, and we have a variety of guest ambassadors in positions to help our guests with all those safety enhancements," said Quinn Bryner, Director of Public Relations for Hershey Entertainment and Resorts.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discourages large gatherings where maintaining six feet of distance isn't possible, as that puts people at the highest risk for contracting COVID-19.According to the CDC's website, "The more people an individual interacts with at a gathering and the longer that interaction lasts, the higher the potential risk of becoming infected with COVID-19 and COVID-19 spreading."However, Storey says, parks are doing everything they can to keep customers safe."We provide a lot of jobs, and we do a lot for our communities," Storey said. "We provide respite, we provide fun and help create great memories for our guests and visitors, and that's what’s critical in all that we do."Anyone planning a trip an amusement park should check the park's website prior to visiting to ensure that social distancing is possible. 3154

INDIANAPOLIS — A junior high student tested positive for COVID-19 after the district's first day back to school.The superintendent for at Greenfield-Central Junior High School sent an email to parents and students notifying them of the positive coronavirus case late last week.According to the message, the student attended school for part of the day and was then taken to the school's clinic and isolated.The child was sent to school despite having a COVID-19 test pending. The superintendent says anyone who was in close contact with the student has already been notified.The Hancock County Health Department released the following statement about the incident:"On July 30, 2020, the Hancock County Health Department was notified of a positive COVID-19 test result for a student that was in attendance at Greenfield-Central Junior High. The Hancock County Health Department and the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation (G-CCSC) officials followed their COVID-19 response plan that was jointly created prior to the beginning of the school year. Local health officials immediately notified the COVID-19 contact for the G-CCSC. Parents and guardians of the students who had been exposed were notified by school officials. Those students will remain in quarantine according to CDC recommendations. As the contact tracing process continues, Local and State Health Departments will continue to coordinate with the G-CCSC officials."Parents with children who attend the school are frustrated and concerned."Why would you send your child to school knowing that you are waiting for this result?" Kelley Thompson said.Monika Ogle's daughter just started seventh grade on Thursday."So, of course in my mind I'm thinking 'here we go,'" Ogle said. "Honestly, I was just waiting for the phone call but I never received one so hopefully that means everything is good."Superintendent Dr. Harold Olin said contract tracing has now started and a large group of students that were in close contact with the student are in quarantine for 14 days."It's certainly unfortunate for those families that were contacted last night," Olin said. "They have this excitement about being back for the first day of school and that very night getting a phone call saying your child is going to need to stay home for two weeks. Disappointing? Yes. The word you asked me about yes I'm disappointed."Olin said the focus now is on educating parents of expectations."If a pending test is out there we would think that parents would not send their students to us until that was clear," Olin said."The guidelines say that if your kid is running a fever or having symptoms you keep your kid home," Thompson said. "That's common sense."Parents are being asked to self-monitor their children. IRAPUATO, Mexico (AP) — Local Mexican officials again helped thousands of Central American migrants find rides Sunday on the latest leg of their journey toward the U.S. border.At a toll plaza to the west of the central Mexico city of Queretaro, where the group spent Saturday night, police prevented migrants from waylaying trucks on their own, but officers did help them find vehicles for rides.The government of Queretaro said via Twitter that 6,531 migrants had moved through the state between Friday and Saturday. INDIANAPOLIS — A man who had to be rescued from a retention pond on Indianapolis' northeast side Monday after he jumped in to rescue his dog has died. The incident happened in The Masters apartment complex at about 11:30 a.m., near Masters Road and E. 91st Street.The Indianapolis Fire Department says the man went after one of his dogs when the pup went into the icy water.The victim, a man in his 20s, was not able to get out of the water.Two residents of the complex saw the man trying to rescue his dog and tried to help. Both fell into the water but were able to get out and were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. The victim was pulled from the water by a rescue team and rushed to St. Vincent Hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released. The victim's dog is expected to be OK.  859

It’s just after 10 a.m. and Terry DeRouchey is driving up the trail to see the base of what will be the highest stone structure in the world. That is if it’s ever finished.“This is supposed to be representative of all Native Americans, and it’s just a special kind of feeling that I have,” DeRouchey said.It’s more than a monument to Crazy Horse, the legendary Lakota Warrior who fought in the battle of Little Big Horn against General Custer. It’s a whole mountain.“So, the face up there is 87.5 feet tall and all that red rock behind his face where it meets the grey rock in the back is where they’re going to carve his hair. And once the get his hair carved in, you could fit all four heads of Mt. Rushmore into his head,” described DeRouchey.In the 1940s, Chief Standing Bear wrote to the sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, and asked him to create a monument for Crazy Horse. On June 3, 1948, Korczak made the first blast and the project was started.Now, 72 years later, the project still isn’t finished.“We carve the mountain because it represents all the nation's indigenous people of the North American continent. My name is Monique Ziolkowski. Because I was born here, all of our brothers and sisters were born here. This just happened to be a project that mother and dad started in 1948,” said Monique Ziolkowski, the ninth of 10 children of Korczak and Ruth Ziolkowski.She’s continuing the work of her family seven decades later.“Dad carved many things into stone, and he felt he was a storyteller in stone. This just happens to be a bigger piece of stone,” said Ziolkowski.On Oct. 20 of each year, the memorial pays tribute to Monique’s father. The day marks the anniversary of his death.“Dad was one extreme to the other, and everything in between. He had a lot of heart a lot of passion, could be very hard on you if you were in the doghouse. One extreme to the other,” Ziolkowski recalled. Nearly 600 feet up above Korczak’s tomb, the work continues. Some of his grandsons are up there carving away at the hard rock of the Black Hills. The project continues to be a family affair.“Two of our nephews work on the mountain and then one of our nieces works in the archive room,” said Ziolkowski.However, it’s more than just a monument. The plan includes a welcome center, Native American museum, and The Indian University of North America, for students just finishing high school.“They have classes from professors from the first week of June to the first week of August and they left here with 12 college credits,” said DeRouchey.The foundation’s funding comes from donations and visitors from across the country.While the work has been ongoing for 72 years, there is no timeline to finish and no exact estimate on cost. But the family and foundation will press on because this is the story they’ve chosen to tell in stone“There’s all kinds of great stories out there, this is just one of them," said Ziolkowski. 2927
