BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Saturday discussed the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula in phone calls with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and Japanese foreign minister Seiji Maehara.The discussions follow an artillery exchange between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in waters off the west coast of the divided peninsula on Tuesday.During the conversations, Yang said safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula served the common interests of concerned parties.Those parties should call on the DPRK and South Korea to exercise calmness and restraint and hold dialogue and make contacts, and not to take actions that would escalate the conflict, he said.He said all parties should work together to help cool the situation as soon as possible and effectively ensure no repeat of such conflict.Meanwhile, the Chinese minister expressed the hope that concerned parties would take a reasonable and pragmatic approach to actively create favorable conditions for resuming the six-party talks.The parties should also commit themselves to establish related mechanisms at an early date to eliminate various factors threatening peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole region.Lavrov said Russia agreed with China on the latest situation and was ready to keep close contact with China to help defuse the tensions on the peninsula and create conditions for a restart of the six-party talks.Maehara said that Japan is willing to work together with China to jointly safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and push forward the denuclearization process of the Peninsula.During Tuesday's incident, shells landed on South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island near the contentious sea border called Northern Limit Line (NLL). The clash left four South Koreans dead, while damages to the DPRK have yet to be verified.

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union (AU) Ramtane Lamamra, and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia Gu Xiaojie on Friday signed an agreement on the provision of aid to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).The grant amounting to 30 million RMB, (over 4 million U.S. dollars), will be used to supply equipment and materials for AMISOM. The signing of this agreement comes in the wake of the adoption by the United Nations Security Council, on Dec. 22, of resolution 1964(2010), in which it, inter alia, requested the Secretary- General to continue to provide a logistical support package for AMISOM, for a maximum troop strength of 12,000, as called for by resolution 1863 (2009).In resolution 1964(2010), the Security Council also called on UN Member States and regional and international organizations to make direct bilateral donations in support of AMISOM.By generously providing aid to AMISOM, the People's Republic of China is responding to the call made by the United Nations Security Council and the earlier appeal by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for AU partners to support the ongoing efforts in Somalia, AU said in a statement. Gu Xiaojie reiterated China's continued commitment to strengthen its cooperation with the AU in the area of peace and security and to support all endeavors in this regard. He lauded AU's efforts and resolve towards the promotion of peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia.Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Lamamra stated said that "China has, over the years, been providing multifaceted assistance to the AU and African countries as they strive to address the many challenges facing the continent. BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods grew 18.7 percent in November year on year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Saturday.Retail sales of consumer goods stood at 1.39 trillion yuan (208.1 billion U.S. dollars) in November and the growth rate was 0.1 percentage points higher than that in October, the NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyun said at a press conference.Retail sales of consumer goods in the January-to-November period reached 13.92 trillion yuan, up 18.4 percent from the same period last year.The growth rate in the January-to-November period was 0.1 percentage points higher than that in the January-to-October period.The NBS said urban consumption hit 1.2 trillion yuan in November, up 19 percent year on year.Rural residents spent 186.5 billion yuan on consumption goods in November, up 17 percent year on year.In breakdown, catering sector sales rose 19.6 percent to 160.1 billion yuan in November from a year earlier, while retail sales increased 18.6 percent to 1.23 trillion yuan in November year on year.

BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center alerted central and southeast China to a blizzard on Wednesday as a bitter cold front kept expanding southward, enveloping China in snow and record-low temperatures.Snows have now covered most of southern China. Even the subtropical Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will see temperatures drops up to 10 degrees centigrade, according to a statement from the center.The ongoing Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, were affected by the weather. The wheelchair tennis competition hadto be held indoors, with some matches being delayed on Wednesday.A snowfall, starting at 8:45 a.m., has coated Nanchang City, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, in white. Forecasts say snowstorms will continue to ravage most of Jiangxi until Friday.With the average temperature having dropped from about 9 to 1.7 degrees centigrade, most parts of central China's Hunan province are being pounded by rain, snow and hail storms.The weather has also begun to disrupt traffic.Flights leaving an airport in Jiangxi were canceled as snows affected visibility of pilots. NANJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A court in east China's Jiangsu Province sentenced a man to death and another to life in prison Friday for illegally raising up to 4 billion yuan (606 million U.S. dollars) in a fraudulent investment scheme.Another 11 suspects were given jail terms ranging from two-and-a-half to 10 years for collusion in the fraud, which caused losses of 650 million yuan (98 million dollars) to 14,822 investors, the Intermediate People's Court in the provincial capital, Nanjing, said in a statement.According to the statement, Sun Haiyu and Hu Zhen jointly set up a company, Nanjing Runzai Biology Co., Ltd. in January 2004 and began soliciting investments from the public in the name of planting glossy ganoderma, or reishi mushrooms, which are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine.The judge said the company exaggerated its profits in planting glossy ganoderma and fraudulently claimed that the investment was risk free.The duo, together with 11 accomplices, raised more than 4 billion yuan from April 2004 to July 2008.Sun was sentenced to death for the crime of illegal fund-raising by fraudulent means, while Hu was sentenced to life imprisonment.
