(AP) — California wildlife officials say residents cannot keep an invasive beagle-sized rodent as a pet.The Sacramento Bee reports that the California Fish and Game Commission are taking preventive action to avoid the South American nutria from spreading.The commission says they will discuss adding nutria to a legal list of prohibited pets in December.Officials say California could see about 250,000 rodents in five years.Scientists say they captured hundreds in multiple counties already as part of a million plan to eradicate the rodent.Experts say their burrowing is damaging to waterways and flood protection infrastructure.Nutrias have also been reported in Oregon, Louisiana and Maryland. 727

(AP) — California may join many other states in allowing 17-year-olds to vote in primary and special elections, if they will turn 18 before the following general election, under a proposed amendment to the state constitution approved Thursday by the state Assembly.If two-thirds of senators agree, the measure would to go to voters for their consideration in California's March primary election, but it would not affect next year's elections.The measure passed, 57-13, over objections from Republican Assemblyman James Gallagher of Nicolaus that it's a ploy to lure more Democratic-leaning young voters.RELATED: California Gov. RICHMOND, Ind. — Shots were fired at a Richmond middle school Thursday morning.The incident happened at Dennis Middle School, at about 8 a.m. local time. Police say a teenaged suspect is dead after taking his own life.The school district confirmed on Twitter there was an active shooter. The school is secure.The suspect is contained, WRTV in Indianapolis reports.All Richmond Community Schools are on lockdown, the district posted on Facebook. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a law giving tax breaks to more immigrants. In June, California expanded its earned income tax credit to apply to immigrants who have jobs and pay taxes but don't have a Social Security number. But the credit only applied to immigrants who had a child under 6. The law Newsom signed Friday eliminates that requirement, making the tax credit available to more people. It's one of several laws California has enacted in recent years to offer more government services to people living in the country illegally. Newsom said the law will help stimulate the economy. 634

That's according to a one-sentence statement the private Virginia university issued Friday.
