And now Marian Walter is getting the red carpet treatment for her 106th birthday.Staff at Merrill Gardens at Oceanside say they were shocked to learn Walter was turning 106 because she's one of the most alive, intelligent, and funny people they've ever met.Walter was born in Brooklyn in 1913 and went on to earn a PhD. in Romance Languages and Literature at the University of North Carolina. She speaks seven languages and loved traveling the world. "Italy has just everything in the way of art, you know? It was wonderful. I hated to leave there!" said Walter. Her advice on staying forever-young is to work hard and never stop learning. "Learn as much as you can under any conditions you can do it!" said Walter.As for her birthday wish for the world, "Happiness, decentness. God wants us all to get along with one another. To help one another. To understand one another." Walter has two daughters, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego's next thrill ride has been given the all clear by the state.The California Coastal Commission Wednesday approved the park's request for a dive coaster called Mako, set to open at the park next year. The roller coaster is already being billed as the "tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster in California," and the only floorless dive coaster in the state.The San Diego City Council gave the 153-foot ride unanimous approval last April, allowing SeaWorld to exceed the city's 30-foot height limitation in coastal zones.RELATED: SeaWorld San Diego brings back its popular annual SoCal PassSeaWorld says construction on Mako should begin in the next few months.The ride, announced in January, will be constructed by Switzerland-based Bollinger & Mabillard. Floorless cars will hold 18 riders at a time in three six-person rows. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Six people inside a minivan that drove down a flooded road near Fashion Valley mall were rescued Friday, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue official. Avenida del Rio, a popular exit route for the mall south of Friars Road, was closed Thursday and Friday due to rising water levels in the San Diego River. A lifeguard river rescue crew was nearby, along with fire trucks. No one was hurt, fire officials said.Police say the car was driven by a rideshare driver who had picked up five women at the mall who were all visiting from out of the country.There are barriers on the south side of Fashion Valley mall indicating the road is closed. 854

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Smoke from a fire burning in Mexico is visible throughout San Diego Thursday. The blaze is burning roughly five miles into Mexico amid hot, windy conditions. According to Cal Fire, the fire poses no threat to the U.S. at this time. The agency said, however, it is monitoring the situation and will send a response if the fire threatens San Diego County. A red flag warning was issued for much of San Diego County through Friday. “Winds will get stronger during the day today peaking overnight into Friday early afternoon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo and Safari Park hope to reopen "in the coming weeks" now that California has released guidance for zoos to open their gates starting Friday.Last week, the state released guidance for county's approved for accelerated reopenings to open businesses like zoos, family entertainment centers, gyms, bars and wineries, and more starting June 12.(The state's criteria for sectors can be found here.)In a statement to 10News, the zoo said staff are reviewing the state's guidance to plan how to best reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic:"We are delighted to receive word from the Governor letting us know that the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park will be able to open this month. We can’t wait to invite our community back to the zoo and park in the coming weeks. We have just received information from the State regarding the requirements and guidelines for us to re-open and are reviewing this document so we can determine next steps to open safely and responsibly for our community.
