BEIJING, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo started a timer Friday for the year-long countdown to the Shanghai World Expo at Tian'anmen Square in the heart of Beijing.     Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, said at a ceremony that the government would spare no effort in preparation for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and the country looked forward to experiencing technological advances and sharing the achievements of human civilization with friends from across the world. FLORENCE, Italy, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China highly values its relations with Italy and is willing to broaden consensus and deepen pragmatic cooperation with the country in various fields. Bilateral relations have developed smoothly since China and Italy established diplomatic relations 39 years ago, Hu said at a meeting with senior Italian officials, including Culture Minister Sandro Bondi and Toscana Region's President Claudio Martini.     He added that the two countries have further deepened their cooperation in politics, economy, culture and other fields especially since they set up an all-around strategic partnership in 2004. BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China did not lose its advantages in foreign trade despite global downturn and could retain foreign trade level above the global average once global economy recovered, a senior Chinese official said Saturday.     Yi Xiaozhun, vice commerce minister, was speaking at the Global Think Tank Summit that ended Saturday in Beijing.     Though China's foreign trade would not rise sharply as it did in the past few years, the country did not lose its foreign trade advantages thanks to policies to stimulate domestic demands, Yi said.     He said China had been diversifying foreign trade and reported increased trade with countries in Africa, Middle East, middle Asia and Latin America.     Yi also called for halt on protectionism, saying that protectionism had been picking up and about 40 percent of anti-dumping cases and 70 percent of anti-subsidy cases targeted China.     He called for pushing forward the Doha round negotiation, which he believed was key in fighting against protectionism.

WASHINGTON, April 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Tuesday that the prosperity of the American economy needs the rest of the world to recover.     "The rest of the world needs the U.S. economy and financial system to recover in order for it to revive," said Geithner in remarks to the Economic Club of Washington. "We remain at the center of global economic activity with financial and trade ties to every region of the globe."     "Just as importantly, we need the rest of the world to recover if we are to prosper again here at home," the Treasury chief said.     "Before the crisis, U.S. exports were among our economy's fastest-growing sectors, accounting for more than 6 million American jobs, or about 5 percent of total private sector employment in the U.S. Now, they are one of its fastest-shrinking," he stated.     He called for global cooperation to cope with the current crisis, which he said was "the most severe crisis in generations."     "As a consequence, the community of nations must work together -- and that work has already begun -- to revive economies around the world and to lay the groundwork for a new, more stable and more sustainable pattern of growth in the future," he said.
