COLUMBUS, Ohio — Border Patrol agents detained an Ohio woman for eight hours and falsely accused her of human smuggling. The woman said she and her husband were leaving a funeral in California when agents stopped them at a checkpoint.For nearly 40 hours, Reina and her husband made the 2,000-mile drive from their home in Columbus, Ohio to Calexico, California. The couple was taking in the scenic views state-by-state, "Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Oklahoma until we got to California," recalled Reina.The two were attending a funeral in the border city for a family friend. However, the quick trip would turn into a frightful and long ordeal, Reina said. She would eventually be left stranded in the California desert."I said 'I'm in trouble, I have to find my way home,' " said Reina.Her troubles all began on their way home. Reina and her husband were driving up Highway 86 when they came across a toll-like booth under a white canopy. It was a Border Patrol checkpoint near the Salton Sea."I don't know if it's because we have out-of-state tags or because of what we look like, but he asked us what is our citizenship," Reina recounted. "I answered, then they asked my husband."Reina, an American of Puerto Rican descent, handed agents her passport, but it wasn't so simple for her husband. He is an undocumented immigrant from Honduras, and without the proper papers, agents detained Reina's husband and then shifted their attention to her."And he said 'Take off your jewelry.' I said 'Why?' He said, 'Cause you are being arrested.' I said, 'For what?' he said 'For smuggling,' " said Reina.Agents were accusing her of traveling to the border to smuggle her husband into the United States."He said 'You came here and picked up your husband, didn't you?' " recalled Reina.Reina said she insisted she had proof the two traveled together. She had hotel and gas receipts detailing their journey. But agents booked and fingerprinted Reina and placed her in a locked holding cell."It is freezing like an icebox in there," she said. "The benches are aluminum. The toilet is stainless steel, and there is a camera in the corner watching you."Minutes turned to hours before Reina said she was taken in for another round of questioning."He said, 'Oh I didn't know you were still here; they forgot about you,' " said Reina.           The U.S. Attorney's office decided against charging Reina with smuggling. Only then was she free to go, after sitting in that cell for eight hours."I felt violated. I felt betrayed because I was an American and I have my own rights," said Reina.She was then left to find her own way home since Border Patrol agents confiscated the couple's rental car. Reina said agents dropped her off at a truck stop a few minutes up the road close to midnight.She said a manager there drove her an hour to the nearest airport. That is where she booked a 9 plane ticket home.WEWS reached out to the United States Border Patrol. They said agents followed the protocol for when someone is suspected of "alien smuggling." They also say when a person is released, it is up to them to get a ride or agents will take them to a nearby public place. 3227

CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Sequoyah High School students were not afraid to speak out after they said school officials told them they had to remove American flags mounted on their vehicles.On Thursday, a student showed up to the school, located about 40 minutes northwest of Tulsa, with a flag mounted on his car. “As soon as we got out of our cars in the parking lot they were already on us trying to get them down," student Kennith Hoover said. “The American flag symbolizes no racism and it's just strictly for America's freedom," student Jake Storts said. It's a symbol of patriotism, freedom and history. “I think it’s a fight that they picked that they will never win," local business owner Larry Banzet said. “The flag was in great shape, it was mounted properly," Hoover said. "It looked perfect. There was no kind of disrespect about it and they told him to take it down.” Friday, a group of students decided to stand with their friend. “You can’t tell a kid to take the flag down," Hoover said. "We disagree with that so that’s how it started.” “We’re not allowed to fly them because he can’t allow the Islamic or the KKK flag then he can’t allow the American flag," Storts said. Hoover says the school's reasoning change more than once. “Yesterday they said it was a distraction to drivers and students," he said. We want our students to understand the importance of being patriotic, within the guidelines, and to be very understanding of the Flag Code and flag etiquette. It’s all about the joy ride of life,” said Grant Babb, the owner of Joyride Brewing.That’s despite new state rules that state bars must serve food to stay open, and Joyride doesn't serve food.“It makes you lose a little sleep at night, not knowing every day when you wake up if you have to do something different. It’s trying to shoot at a bullseye and just watching it constantly move,” said Babb.Babb had to make arrangements with multiple food trucks and the restaurant down the street to stay open. That’s because the recent spike in COVID-19 cases has led the state to put its economic restart plans on hold.“In our case, we schedule out food trucks about a month and a half in advance, and we’re working with only the food trucks we’re trusted partners with,” said Babb.Colorado isn’t the only state backtracking due to the surge. According to a tracker from the New York Times, 15 states are pausing plans to reopen and six are reversing course and shutting some things back down.Arizona is one of those states where bars, gyms, and theaters have been ordered closed once again. Restaurants there fear the same might happen to them soon if new COVID-19 cases aren’t curbed.“You can’t simply turn off and turn on a restaurant operation,” said Steve Churci, the head of the Arizona Restaurant Association. He says the toll of shutting down those businesses for a second time would be crushing.“If you were to shut down, what happens to the suicide rate? Does that go up? What happens to the homelessness rate, people losing their homes? So, there’s a whole other sad and unfortunate contingent that would be impacted by this,” said Churci.Churci says service industry workers employ almost a quarter-million people and the state has lost 5 million in revenue from food sales. He says in a normal year, US restaurants sell 0 billion worth of food.“Almost a trillion-dollar industry. So, we often say we’re the cornerstone of our communities. We’re the heart and soul of America in the restaurant industry, and we are,” said Churci. For Joyride, the losses have been heavy as well.“We, we’re down 80 percent in the month of March, April, May. And then June, we’re still seeing a significant decrease, we’re down definitely 40 percent,” said Babb. For Babb, the money hurt, but letting his staff go was harder.“It’s the most painful thing you can do is tell an employee that we don’t have any work for you,” he said.He says it will hurt even more if he has to send his staff home again. 2647
