LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rafer Johnson, who won the decathlon at the 1960 Rome Olympics and helped subdue Robert F. Kennedy's assassin in 1968, has died. He was 86. Family friend Michael Roth says Johnson died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. No cause was announced. Johnson was among the world's greatest athletes from 1955 through his Olympic triumph in 1960. The Associated Press reported Johnson won a national decathlon championship in 1956 and a silver medal at the Melbourne Olympics that same year.He lit the torch at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. In June 1968, Johnson was with Kennedy at a hotel in Los Angeles when the senator was shot by Sirhan Sirhan. Johnson, along with former NFL star Rosey Grier and journalist George Plimpton, helped in subduing the shooter. Kennedy died the next day.According to the Associated Press, Johnson called the assassination “one of the most devastating moments in my life.” 925

LOS ANGELES – A judge ruled Thursday that Starbucks and other coffee sellers in California must carry cancer warnings, according to the Associated Press. The decision comes after a lawsuit was filed by the nonprofit Council for Education and Research on Toxins that targeted several companies, including Starbucks and 7-Eleven, CNN previously reported. The lawsuit alleged that the companies “failed to provide clear and reasonable warning” that drinking coffee could expose people to acrylamide, which is created when coffee beans are roasted.Court documents filed by the nonprofit state that, under Proposition 65, businesses must warn people about the presence of agents that affect health. The coffee industry claimed that the acrylamide was present, but only in harmless levels. The industry also argued that they should be exempt because the chemical results naturally from the cooking process. In addition to paying fines, the lawsuit called for companies to post warnings about acrylamide with explanations about the risks of drinking coffee."I'm addicted to coffee, I confess, and I would like to be able to have mine without acrylamide," said Raphael Metzger, the attorney who represented the nonprofit."Coffee has been shown, over and over again, to be a healthy beverage. The US Government's own Dietary Guidelines state that coffee can be part of a healthy lifestyle. This lawsuit simply confuses consumers, and has the potential to make a mockery of Prop 65 cancer warning at a time when the public needs clear and accurate information about health,” said Bill Murray, President and CEO of the National Coffee Association.Acrylamide was added to California’s carcinogen list in January of 1990. 1723

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A man who Los Angeles Police say repeatedly punched two women during a fight with a street vendor is charged with misdemeanor battery, the LA City Attorney’s office said Wednesday. Arka Sangbaran Oroojian, 30, was caught on camera attacking the women in downtown Los Angeles Jan. 26, City Attorney Mike Feuer said. Investigators said Oroojian began arguing with a hot dog vendor at 6th and Spring Streets when two women came to the vendor’s defense. The fought escalated when Oroojian punched one woman, police said. The second woman tripped Oroojian and he fell to the ground, eventually getting to his feet and hitting both women, according to officers. As they rose, police said Oroojian punched them again and ran away. The women suffered injuries including a concussion, broken finger, and bruises. Oroojian turned himself in to Los Angeles Police and is facing five counts of battery. If convicted, he could face up to 30 months in jail and ,000 in fines.Attention Los Angeles — this guy brutally punched two women at a hotdog stand on Jan. 26 in the area of 6th & Spring.
