SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Wearing masks and social distancing, churchgoers in Mira Mesa gathered outside of the Good Shepherd Parish Wednesday for a special Veterans Day mass.Under San Diego County's latest move into the purple tier, outdoor mass will be the new normal for the church until we move back into a less restrictive tier.“We want to protect the people,” said Father Michael Pham, a pastor at the Catholic church. “Health is important.”He said since reopening, the church has offered services inside at a limited capacity, outside and online. By Saturday, indoor operations will cease due to the county falling back into the purple tier.“We want to comply with the state and health department,” said Pham. “It’s a challenge, but people seem to adapt very well.”While Pham plans to comply, some others are pushing back.Skyline Church posted a lengthy statement to its website, reacting to news of the purple tier. Part of the message said, “Regardless of what tier the governor assigns to San Diego County, our Board, Trustees, and staff all agree that it is necessary to remain open for the overall health and well-being of our communities.”We saw this happen during the last round of closures. Some churches kept their doors open, saying shutting them any longer would lead to severe problems for people, including mental health issues. The county’s public health officer sent cease and desist letters to a few, but some continued to fight back, arguing that religious services are essential.“Fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost, it’s essential,” said the pastors of Awaken Church in a video posted to the church’s website months ago during another closure.Pham said his main goal is to protect his congregants and only reopen once allowed.“We try to do the best we can,” he said. “People are really conscientious about what they need to do, that’s important, that’s the reality that we live in right now.” 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two teens are dead after a car reportedly struck a freeway guardrail in Mission Valley, before flipping over into an embankment and bursting into flames.Witnesses told CHP they saw a car speeding on the ramp from westbound Interstate 8 to southbound State Route 163 just after 3 a.m. Saturday. The car hit a guardrail and flipped over the edge of the freeway and fell down onto an embankment below, CHP says.By the time authorities arrived on scene, the vehicle was on fire.Three of the four occupants, including the driver, were pulled from the wreckage and taken to a nearby hospital. Officers tried to pull the fourth person from the vehicle, but say flames overtook the car. After the Medical Examiner arrived to help retrieve the fourth person, they said a second body was found in the charred wreck. It was unclear it the fifth occupant was killed in the crash or fire. The two victims were described as being 15 years old.CHP said they suspect drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Because of that, the driver could be charged with manslaughter, CHP says. The crash closed the onramps from southbound SR-163 to westbound I-8 and WB I-8 to SB SR-163. CHP was unsure how long the closures would be in place. 1252

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two greater one-horned rhino calves took their first steps into their habitat for the first time this week at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.Next to their mothers Asha and Tanaya, the calves — born on March 25 and April 11, respectively — were finally able to explore their Asian Savanna habitat. Both pairs bonded while traversing the area, before intereacting with some of the other wildlife in the habitat.Tanaya and her female calf, which has not yet been named, enjoyed some wallowing in the mud, taking a cool dip, and meeting some of the blackbuck antelope and other animals in the 40-acre habitat.Asha and her male calf, named Arjun, explored hills and grassy areas. Arjun also met one of the habitat's Javan bantang (before quickly running back to mom's side."It’s great to see Asha and Tanaya introducing their calves to other wildlife for the first time," said Jillian King, senior wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. "Everything is new to the calves right now, so it will be interesting to watch them explore. We will keep a watchful eye on them, and look forward to them meeting more of the wildlife on the savanna soon."The greater one-horned rhino is listed as "vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. This is primarily because of habitat loss, poaching, and illegal rhino horn trafficking. The species, once widespread in Southeast Asia, is now only found in India and Nepal. There are an estimate 3,500 greater one-horned rhino left in the world. 1563

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Health received its first batch of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday, and the health care provider expects another shipment next week.“We expect next week to perhaps get 5,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine,” said Dr. Charles Daniels, Chief Pharmacy Officer at UC San Diego Health. Daniels added they could receive the shipment as soon as Monday or Tuesday, but no date has been finalized. The Moderna vaccine is still awaiting emergency use authorization from the FDA, which it could receive this week. Pfizer’s vaccine was the first to get such approval last week.UC San Diego received close to 3,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine Tuesday and plans to begin administering shots to its highest risk health care workers at its Hillcrest and La Jolla locations Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said California was expected to get 393,000 more doses of the Pfizer vaccine next week, on top of the 327,000 it received this week. Newsom said California is also slated to receive 672,000 doses of Moderna’s vaccine by the end of the month.San Diego County has not given an estimated timeline to receive the Moderna vaccine or how large a shipment it expects.UC San Diego Health was part of the Moderna trial, but Dr. Daniels says it is not the reason for their access to the vaccine. He believes it was coordinated through the University of California Health. 1404
