In a resounding defeat after months of negotiations, senators on Thursday failed to advance a bipartisan proposal to resolve the future of millions of young undocumented immigrants, leaving talks seemingly back at square one.A much-anticipated bipartisan deal that would have paired a pathway to citizenship for nearly 2 million undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children with billion in border security and some other measures failed to get the 60 votes necessary to advance legislation after furious White House opposition.The vote was 54-45.A competing White House-backed plan that would have also substantially increased federal deportation powers, heavily cut family-based legal migration and end the diversity visa also failed, 39-60.The episode, coming at the end of a much-anticipated Senate week of debate on immigration, revealed that the White House was successfully able to kill momentum for a deal that had emerged out of weeks of talks by roughly 20 bipartisan senators -- but that it also had no ability to actually enact any legislation to achieve its stated goal of protecting the recipients of the DACA program that President Donald Trump is ending and enact border security measures with it.Trump called the bipartisan bill "a total catastrophe," tweeting that "Voting for this amendment would be a vote AGAINST law enforcement, and a vote FOR open borders."Attorney General Jeff Sessions also derided the legislation, saying it "will invite a mad rush of illegality across our borders," and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen made calls to lawmakers urging them to reject the bill.And Sen. Tom Cotton, an Arkansas Republican, said on the Senate floor that the plan would be called the "olley olley oxen free amendment."The legislation from a group of 16 bipartisan senators would offer nearly 2 million young undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children before 2012 -- like those protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program -- a path to citizenship over 10 to 12 years.The plan would also place billion in a guarded trust for border security, would cut a small number of green cards each year for adult children of current green card holders, and would prevent parents from being sponsored for citizenship by their US citizen children if that child gained citizenship through the pathway created in the bill or if they brought the child to the US illegally. In a year filled with uncertainty and anxiety for students across the country, the students at James Faulkner Elementary School have found safety and solitude, not inside their small southern New Hampshire schoolhouse, but in the woods behind it.As COVID-19 cases spiked across the country and school districts agonized over whether to send kids back to in-person learning, students and teachers in this picturesque New England town decided to move classes outdoors. Now, three months into the school year, there’s talk of making these newly constructed outdoor classrooms a permanent fixture for kids, pandemic or not.“We’ve experienced this and seen that we can make it work,” explained elementary school teacher Jacquie Cornwell. “There’s been discussions about whether this is something we want to continue doing. It’s just been such a positive experience for our kids.”Cornwell, 34, has been teaching for nearly a decade. Going into this school year, she was incredibly concerned about her own safety and the safety of her students. Stoddard is home to just over 1,200 people, and the small school building here doesn’t lend itself to much social distancing. So, as the school year began, students here started constructing two “base camps” in the woods behind the school. Each morning, students pack up their books, pencils and snacks and head outside.They even petitioned the town of Alderman to use some of the land that isn’t technically on school property.Now, dozens of kids spent three to four hours a day learning outside. On a recent afternoon this fall, Mother Nature had painted their classroom walls in vibrant orange hues, as the maple trees that surround the property here prepared to shed their leaves for the winter.All of it has helped to foster a learning environment that Cornwell says has been free of stress and anxiety. Something hard to come by during a pandemic.“I’ve noticed that on days when we are outside, negative behaviors really seem to much less than when we are indoors,” she said.Looking around at her students scattered on small wooden benches around the woods, Cornwell can’t help but reflect on how surprised she’s been at how well this school year has turned out.“It’s really turned something that could’ve made this year horrible, sitting in desks, facing forward, not playing with friends, into one of the best years I’ve had in my nine years of teaching,” she said.The New Hampshire air is plentiful out here, which minimizes concerns about ventilation and COVID-19 lingering in the air. There hasn't been a single case of COVID-19 reported here this year. With the risk of spreading COVID lower outdoors, students can even take off their masks sometimes when having snacks or reading in socially-distanced groups.It’s brought on a sense of normalcy for these students, something they’ve longed for since the spring.“The woods have all kinds of sounds, the birds, the planes going by. It makes it feel normal,” said 10-year-old student Brie Bell.Bell and her classmates have taken pride in this outdoor space they've built by hand. They've hung hammocks for reading time and even built a fire pit for the colder months. With coronavirus cases spiking across the country, students here seem genuinely invested in keeping this concept going as long as it means they get to continue in-person learning.“I feel like they’re having these impactful experiences they’re going to carry with them for the rest of their lives,” Cornwell said. 3486
If you live with someone who has opposing views about the COVID-19 pandemic, it can make living situations awkward.Hunter Stanfield is an assistant professor of family science at Lipscomb University. When approaching someone about their views on COVID-19, and their habits, he said it’s best to remain calm and open-minded.“It is throwing everyone for a loop,” Stanfield said, “So instead of saying that you’re really getting worked up about this, that’s probably not the best initial approach. It may be ‘I can see that this is really upsetting to you, can you tell me a little bit more about that?'”He said trying to understand, before attempting to be understood, is a good starting place. “Am I willing to consider their perspective, or am I in this to prove them wrong? Which in the end gets us nowhere in all of this, so I think those basic things are really important and critical.”If you know why someone’s habits are a certain way, it’s possible to compromise.“I know some people say compromise is a dirty word, in this case, I think compromise really gets at the fact that I’m wanting to meet someone or be a part of someone’s life the best I can," Stanfield said.If the social awkwardness persists, a ton of people is going to therapy to sort it out right now.“I sometimes equate therapy to taking your car in to get an oil change. Sometimes it’s good to go in for a routine tune-up.”Lipscomb University actually provides low-cost therapy for folks in the community that need it. In a pandemic that relies heavily on the expertise and passion of our healthcare workers, we have seen many doctors and nurses working longer hours and even risking their own health to care for those in need.“This is a pandemic that's going to continue to go on. And a lot of health care providers in different settings have already been asked to work overtime shifts or extra shifts. And the thing is, that’s just increasing the burnout,” said Dr. Jessica Rainbow, RN and UArizona College of Nursing assistant professor.“Before the pandemic burnout was already a normalized issue in Nursing. And what I mean by that is that more nurses than not experienced burnout than those who have what I would call good well-being and don't suffer from burnout,” said Chloe Littzen, RN and UArizona College of Nursing Ph.D. candidate.Rainbow and Littzen are seeking ways to mitigate nurse burnout during the coronavirus pandemic. They say the pandemic has only intensified the problem.“They either leave the setting that they're in. Let's say they're in one unit, they go to another unit. They leave that facility going from, let's say, the hospital setting to the community setting or vice versa, or they leave nursing completely,” said Littzen.That puts the industry in a tough spot. The nursing shortage also affects the ability to educate future nurses and the ability to do more research.“It's important to say that this is not an issue that is the nurse's fault right or any healthcare provider or anyone who works in a healthcare setting,” said Rainbow.From their research, they say health care workers are shown to have good self-care, but it’s the systems of the work environment that can be stressful.“Where they're actually given the resources that they need to be successful. So resources as far as things like PPE, things like having adequate staffing,” said Rainbow.They say a big factor is also the public. Loved ones of those in care can help by being understanding and by adhering to guidelines, such as wearing a mask.“You know, it's important to give grace and struggling times and everyone's emotions are heightened and stressed and you know nurses are people, too. They're also a human being and they're also suffering with you,” said Littzen.They found nurses have done things like meditation, spending more time in nature, and seeking peer groups to voice shared experiences.“Social support is huge for nurses. I mean, especially to when you were a provider and you have a job where your significant other at home may not fully understand what you do. And so it's difficult sometimes if you don't have the social support of other co-workers in the same position,” said Rainbow.Rainbow’s study is called “Working in Healthcare During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
