Lending a helping hand is what Stephen Peth loves to do. Peth spends a lot of his time in the rehabilitation unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, helping wounded warriors get back on their feet. "The job is basically to do whatever we can to help the therapist," Peth explains. At 72 years old, Peth couldn't imagine any other way to spend his time. “I could be out on a golf course doing something for me, but to be here and be working for these wonderful service people that are here for a variety of reasons, to me, that’s inspirational,” he says. Peth says he’s inspired by all the patients he sees, because, he too, was once a warrior wounded in combat. "This is the boot that I was wearing the day that I got shot," he says. In 1967, 11 months into his tour during the Vietnam War, Peth, an army rescue helicopter pilot, was attacked by gunfire. "We took 39 hits on the aircraft,” he recalls. “I took a round through my boot and took a round though my arm." That dangerous mission earned him one of the highest awards of valor. "Gen. Craton Abrams came out and pinned a Silver Star on me," he says.His award and scars serve as reminders that he was once where these war heroes are now, compelling him find a way to serve his country once more. 1305

For 52 years, Tom Hollett has been scanning the water as a lifeguard. But being a lifeguard in Vancouver, Canada means he also keeps watch over frozen water. “I'd rather make 10,000 rescues in the warm ocean than one here,” Hollett says of the frozen lake.This part of Canada, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the North Shore Mountains, it’s the only part of the country where the average temperature stays above freezing, even in the winter. So, when the lakes start to freeze over, it’s a novelty. The lake attracts visitors, who are often tempted to tread on the thin ice, often times with their pets. “There’s people that don't understand the ice, so they just figure they can walk on it,” Hollett says. When temperatures are colder, as they have been this week, the City of Vancouver Parks and Recreation department dubs a few of their summer lifeguards, "iceguards." "Lifeguards are always scanning and keeping an eye out, so that's what our iceguards do,” Sean Healy with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation says. “When they come out to iceguard, they actually do a walking patrol around the lake. More than a hundred people in the Cleveland area are facing federal charges relating to crimes targeted under Operation Legend, according to an update from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.A total of 101 people have been charged. Of those, 59 people have been brought up on narcotics charges, authorities said. Thirty-eight people have been charged with firearm offenses, and four individuals have been charged with violent crimes.“Thanks to the hard work of all those involved in our collaborative law enforcement partnership, we have now charged over 100 defendants in Cleveland under Operation Legend,” said U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman. “Among those charged are career criminals, heroin and fentanyl traffickers, felons with rifles and other high-powered weapons, carjackers, bank robbers and many more. We will continue to pursue these violent criminals and drug traffickers until everyone in Cleveland can live safely and peacefully.”Operation Legend is a federal initiative that was rolled out in July across multiple cities in America, including Cleveland, targeting violent crimes.So far nation-wide, nearly 5,500 people have been arrested and more than 2,000 guns have been confiscated, authorities said.
