SAN MARCOS (KGTV) -- Since CSU San Marcos student Adrianne McWilliams was young, the service was always near and dear to her heart."My dad was active duty for 20 years, so the first few years of my life I moved around a lot. When I was in elementary school, my mom started working for the Marine Corps," McWilliams said. When she found out that those coming home from deployment wouldn't get the staple celebration she remembered as a child, McWilliams wanted to take matters into her own hands."It just kind of made me think about how when I was really young and my dad was deployed, whenever he came back there was always that big homecoming moment," McWilliams told 10News.She created thank you and care packages for those returning home from duty."I'm doing everything I can to make sure that there's at least a little handwritten note on it that says 'welcome home' and 'thank you for your service' so at least they get that little bit of homecoming that they'd get if this were under usual circumstances," McWilliams added. She included basic essentials like toiletries and snacks, something she said they could use since many of them have to self quarantine for two weeks before reuniting with family."Our Marines that are coming home do deserve a special homecoming. Coming home after a long deployment then having to quarantine is not an ideal situation," said McWilliams.McWilliams gathered gifts and donations thanks to friends, family and community members, all from word of mouth and social media. Her first batch was given to 35 returning members."I've always liked giving back but when it's something I'm passionate about and have a personal connection to, the motivation is a little stronger and it's something that hits closer to home," she said.On June 2, 50 packages will be given to another group of returning members. McWilliams also had a message for those who may not have received a package from her upon their return: "Despite the circumstances, we do still see you and we are appreciate you."Click here for more information on how to help with donations. 2086

SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. — Authorities are asking people to be on alert after a man in a white SUV attempted to lure a 10-year-old girl in San Tan Valley, Arizona on Wednesday. According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, shortly before 4 p.m., a 10-year-old girl was walking with a friend near a park in the North Pecan Creek neighborhood when a man driving a white SUV pulled up next to them. The man reportedly told the girl that her brothers were in a serious accident and that she needed to go with him. The girl then asked the man what the "code word" was, but the man did not know and drove off."Kudos to the parents of this child for having a code word and talking about to their children about stranger danger," said Sheriff Mark Lamb. "We hope by putting this out, it will encourage parents to have that conversation and create a plan with their children, so they know what to do if they are in that situation."The SUV has been reportedly seen circling the park several times a day, according to children who live in the neighborhood. “This is generally what I consider a pretty safe area, I’ve never heard of anything bad,” said Patrick McDonald, who lives nearby.“This one time, it saved my daughters life,” said Brenda James, the girl’s mother.James talked to KNXV and the media so that other parents could learn about code words as she did.“We actually just came up that few months ago. So it was something really recent from a story that I read,” James said. The man is described as being possibly in his 40s with a short beard. The man reportedly covered most of his face with his hand while talking to the girl to conceal identifying features, officials said.“I’ll definitely be going home and having a talk with my daughter and developing a code word at the very least,” said McDonald.Anyone with information or sees the suspect, you are asked to call PCSO at (520)-866-5111 with any information. 1965

Screen time has become a common concern during the pandemic, as many school districts turn to online learning. That has doctors telling parents to pay close attention to their children's eyes. "Everybody, adults and kids, can develop computer eye strain. That's mostly because there's a decrease in the blink rate, incomplete eye closure with the blink rate," said Dr. Cate Jordan, a pediatric ophthalmologist with the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Dr. Jordan says eye drops or a warm compress can help children with eye irritation because of increased technology use. But most of all, make sure your eyes get some relief from a screen."In between classes, take a break. Look out a distance and take a couple hard blinks. I really recommend really taking a few hard blinks because it pumps the oil glands and really helps lubricate the eyes," said Dr. Jordan.Stephen Reid is the co-founder of Hue Eyewear. Reid and his wife founded their blue light glasses company when they noticed their children suffered side effects from too much screen time. "With the amount of time we're spending on our screens right now, especially during the pandemic, we need to make sure that we protect ourselves," said Reid.Reid says the glasses protect children and adults from blue light that's emitted from computer, tablet, phone and even television screens. "My children use the glasses. Ever since we started the company they've been using them and they tell me their eyes are less strained and I can feel it, too," said Reid.Dr. Jordan says more studies need to be done on the effectiveness of blue light glasses. Our eyes naturally protect against harmful rays that could affect our eyesight, she adds. "If you've already bought them and a child feels better and wants to use them, then absolutely there's no harm in wearing them. But there's no need to have every child wearing blue light glasses," said Dr. Jordan.Dr. Jordan says too much blue light at the end of the day can disrupt your circadian rhythm, or sleep cycle, so she recommends children make an effort to avoid screens at least two hours before bed time. 2150
