BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's drought relief authorities said Tuesday heavy rains had eased the drought in southwest China's Sichuan Province, but dry weather and high temperatures continued in other affected regions.Compared with data collected last Sunday, people and livestock facing shortage of drinking water in Sichuan had decreased by 500,000 and 560,000 respectively by Tuesday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).Heavy rains also reduced the area of affected arable land in Sichuan by 2.33 million mu (155,333 hectares) by Tuesday, according to the SFDH.However, drought still persisted in other areas, including the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as rain in these regions was far from adequate.As of Tuesday, drought had left 24.62 million people and 18.08 million livestock short of drinking water, said the statement.

NANNING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The government of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region issued a fire ban Saturday ahead of the upcoming Tomb-sweeping Day, in a bid to prevent forest fires against the backdrop of a prolonged drought.According to the ban, tomb-goers are forbidden to burn paper money or incenses and to set off fireworks in forest zones from April 3 to 17.They are also banned from burning straws, leaves, charcoal and others in forest zones.Violators will be fined or even detained and prosecuted, according to the ban.As of Wednesday, the drought, which began in southwestern China last year, has left 19.4 million people with water shortages and affected 6.48 million hectares of farmland in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi and Chongqing, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.It is a tradition for Chinese to visit family graves during the Qingming or Tomb-sweeping Day, which falls on April 5 this year. BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- China will conduct consultations with the European Union on the steel fastener trade dispute in line with the rules of the World Trade Organization's disputes settlement system, said an official with the Ministry of Commerce Monday.China's anti-dumping investigation into carbon-steel fastener imports from the EU was based on Chinese regulations and the assessment of the harm to the domestic industry, said the official.The remarks came after the EU filed a complaint Sunday against China at the World Trade Organization over Beijing's decision to impose anti-dumping measures against carbon-steel fastener imports, which included self-tapping screws, bolts and gaskets.Chinese fastener importers were required to pay a deposit to customs based on the margins -- ranging from 16.8 to 24.6 percent -- between the normal value of the products and the alleged dumping price since Dec. 28, 2009.Initial investigations by the Chinese authorities showed the EU had allegedly dumped carbon-steel fasteners on the Chinese market, which caused substantial damage to the local industry.The temporary anti-dumping measures were adopted to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the domestic producers, the official said.China started an anti-dumping probe into EU carbon steel fasteners on Dec. 29, 2008, after an application for a probe by the fastener branch of the China General Machine Components Industry Association on behalf of Chinese fastener producers.
