The Employment Development Department reported Friday that from April to May, employers added 18,200 people to their payrolls. Still, the employment situation in San Diego County is dire. From May 2019 to May 2020, payroll employment is still down by 195,800 workers. "The positive thing is that the worst is behind us and we've seen month over month job growth so we're improving," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego. "The negative spin is that we're improving but the situation is still bad."The hard-hit restaurant industry led the way with 9,100 new jobs, as coronavirus related restrictions began to lift, allowing in-house dining with reduced capacity.Eric Adler, who co-founded the Artisan Mexican restaurant Puesto, said this year has been particularly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with the the Department of Homeland Security announced Friday plans to screen people returning from restricted countries.American citizens, legal permanent residents, and their immediate families returning to the United States will be required to arrive at one of 13 airports for enhanced screening for coronavirus.“While the overall risk of serious infection from the coronavirus to the general public remains low at this time, the Trump administration is taking these aggressive measures to keep the risk low, requiring all Americans returning from affected areas in Europe to be funneled through 13 airports for screening upon their return to the U.S.,” said Acting Secretary Wolf. “To minimize disruptions to travelers, TSA, CBP, and air carriers are working to identify qualifying passengers before their scheduled flights. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One Comic-Con tradition for many has been donating blood every year through the San Diego Blood Bank.While the convention isn't happening in person, locals can still participate in the yearly blood drive and score some SDCC swag while they're at it.San Diego Blood Bank is extending its annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive until Aug. 18 at any blood bank center or mobile donation drive. Donors will also receive a limited-edition Marvel Black Widow t-shirt while supplies last — a traditional reward for donors every Comic-Con.For the last 43 years, the blood bank says the drive has seen more than 25,000 pints of blood donated, impacting more than 75,000 lives.The drive is even more important this year as the blood bank faces a shortage amid the pandemic. Last month, the center said it's experiencing a critically low blood supply and all blood types are needed.
