An autopsy has confirmed a man who died after a medical emergency mid-flight last week had COVID-19 and it likely caused his death.The 69-year-old man, identified by the coroner as Isais Hernandez, and his wife were on a United Airlines flight from Orlando to Los Angeles on December 14 when he had a medical emergency. The plane made an emergency landing in New Orleans, and Hernandez later died.The coroner for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, says Hernandez’s cause of death was “acute respiratory failure, COVID-19,” according to the New York Times.A man trained as an EMT was onboard and began CPR and life-saving measures along with other passengers and flight attendants when Hernandez fell ill.Tony Adalpa tweeted later that he had COVID-19 symptoms after helping Hernandez, and overheard his wife tell paramedics Hernandez had COVID-19 symptoms, including the loss of taste and smell.Adalpa had originally planned on getting the COVID-19 vaccine this week. Instead, he’s waiting for a second coronavirus test result.When the plane landed, United believed the man’s emergency was cardiac arrest, and they allowed passengers to “take a later flight or continue on with their travel plans,” the airline told NBC News.The airline says they were later contacted by the CDC and “are sharing requested information with the agency so they can work with local health officials to conduct outreach to any customer the CDC believes may be at risk for possible exposure or infection," a representative for the airline told CBS LA.United says Hernandez had filled out a questionnaire before boarding the flight, which asked about testing positive for COVID-19 and having symptoms. It is now apparent the man "wrongly acknowledged this requirement,” the airline said.A United spokesperson told the New York Times that as of Tuesday, no other passengers or crew members have tested positive for COVID-19 since the December 14 flight. 1931

An 18-year-old Nebraska student was arrested earlier this week after police say he threatened to shoot classmates that joined a nationwide movement to walk out of classes in support of gun control.Nicholas J. Scott, 18, a student at Bellevue West High School, was arrested Thursday and booked into the Sarpy County Jail on felony charges of making terroristic threats of violence and possession of a destructive device.Bellevue Police had been investigating a verbal threat reportedly made Wednesday about shooting students at the high school who participated in a planned student walkout as part of a nationwide student protests against gun violence in schools.Police said Scott had been taken out of school by a parent before officers were able to speak with him, according to the press release. But Scott was later contacted and agreed to meet with officers on Thursday. It was at this meeting that he was arrested, the release states.Officers later conducted a search of Scott's bedroom as part of the investigation, finding "various unassembled materials that are commonly known to be used in the manufacturing of explosive devices," which were seized by Bellevue Police as evidence, the release states.Scott remains in the custody of the Sarpy County Jail."The (Bellevue) Police Department would like to publicly thank those who came forward with the information regarding this case," the release states. "The safety guideline of 'Hear Something, Say Something' played an extremely important role in quickly bringing this incident to a safe resolve." 1654

An Air Force plane crashed Tuesday outside of Columbus Air Force Base near the Alabama/Mississippi state line.The Associated Press reports that the pilot and passenger safely ejected from the plane and were later found. Army officials at Fort Hood confirmed the identity of a soldier who was a suspect in the disappearance of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday morning during a confrontation with police.Officials with the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) confirmed the suspect who died Wednesday morning was Aaron Robinson. They also confirmed a second suspect — the estranged wife of a Fort Hood soldier — is also in custody in the Bell County Jail.CID declined to identify the name of the civilian suspect because it was "not in their jurisdiction."CID officials said Robinson and the civilian suspect are currently the only two suspects connected with the case. Officials said social media reports of a third suspect in the case were "irresponsible."The press conference took place a day after Guillen's family claimed that the missing soldier had reported to them before she disappeared that she had been sexually harassed. While CID said Thursday that an investigation into those allegations remains open, they have not yet found credible evidence of harassment.CID also refuted the family's claim that Robinson had harassed Guillen and that Robinson was Guillen's superior officer.Guillen went missing from Fort Hood on April 22. It wasn't until late June that the Army said it suspected foul play in connection with Guillen's death.Army officials reported earlier this week that human remains were found in connection with the search.
