SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Marcos family is dealing with an unbearable loss. The Houghton family was involved in a horrific crash that killed their 13-year-old son, Bryce, Saturday night on the 405 in Orange County. The family of five was headed to San Luis Obispo to visit relatives, according to Michael Houghton. Their 17-year-old daughter was driving, when their van began to slow down. Michael says it seemed like it was running out of gas. It stopped in the HOV lane. Michael, his wife, and three kids decided to stay in the van buckled up and call for help. While they waited for 911 and a tow truck, CHP says a pickup truck slammed into the van. Another vehicle hit the pickup truck after the initial crash. The CHP arrested the driver of the pickup truck on suspicion of DUI. Officers said the driver of the pickup had major injuries. Four people in the third vehicle received minor injuries. Michael described his youngest son as a jovial person who loved to make people smile. “Short in stature but big in personality,” Michael said. “One of the things he loved the most was to make people happy.” The Houghton’s other two children, 15-year-old Mason, and 17-year-old Carissa, received minor injuries, though Mason will be on crutches, according to his dad. Michael’s wife, Gael, needed surgery. Michael received injuries to the back of his head, and injuries to his eye that had previously undergone a procedure. The family was very involved with Anthem Church in Vista, as well as Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside. The Houghtons had organized an event for the homeless on the Saturday before the crash. (AP) — Airbnb will prohibit one-night rentals over Halloween weekend as part of its ongoing effort to crack down on party houses. The action comes nearly a year after a deadly shooting at an Airbnb in Orinda, Calif. Five people were killed in the shooting, which happened during an unauthorized Halloween party. Airbnb says it will ban one-night rentals of entire homes in the U.S. and Canada on Oct. 30 or Oct. 31. Previously booked rentals will be canceled and Airbnb will offer refunds. (AP) — The nation’s top infectious disease expert says that the U.S. may see a “surge upon a surge” of the coronavirus over the coming weeks, and he does not expect current recommendations around social distancing to be relaxed before Christmas. Dr. Anthony Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He appeared Sunday on ABC’s “This Week" and NBC's “Meet the Press." He says it's “not too late” for people traveling back home after the Thanksgiving holiday to help stop the spread of the virus by wearing masks, staying distant from other people and avoiding large groups.“So clearly in the next few weeks, we’re going to have the same sort of thing. (AP) — Mexican health authorities acknowledge the country’s true death toll from the coronavirus pandemic is far higher than previously thought, saying there were 193,170 “excess” deaths in the year up to Sept. 26.Of those, 139,153 are now judged to be attributable to COVID-19. Mexico’s official, test-confirmed death toll is only about 89,000, but officials previously acknowledged many people didn’t get tested or their tests were mishandled.Authorities had previously presented an estimated death toll of 103,882, after taking into account mishandled tests. But the Health Department said Sunday they had analyzed databases to come up with the latest figure.
