SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is taking legal action against a trendy hair product company, claiming it caused her severe hair loss and bald spots. She’s not alone. Women around the country are claiming similar effects. They blame their hair care nightmares on Monat Global, based in Florida.“It’s been so hard,” says San Diego’s Dana Sohovich. She held back tears as she spoke exclusively with 10News about her experience. Sohovich has filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging it falsely promised her “longer, fuller, stronger” hair. Her suit accuses Monat of “false and deceptive advertising”.“I literally had almost a baseball size [ball] of hair in my hand,” she tells us, adding, “It's devastating.”PHOTOS: Monat users report hair and scalp damageTemecula’s Ashley Slayden showed us her daughter’s scalp. “You can see the bald spots [on] her head. You can see how thin it is. It was never that thin,” she adds. Slayden tells us she and her kids starting using the product in the fall. “I bought it at wholesale and I spent seventy dollars,” she adds. As of now, Slayden has not filed suit against the company.Other women have shared pictures of scalp sores, breakage and clumps of fallen strands. 1239

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A team led by Scripps Research has yielded positive results in a new research study involving antibodies.Researchers say they've worked to isolate the most potent antibodies in the blood of recovered COVID-19 patients. The study was published in "Science."Dennis Burton, the study's co-author, says once they identified the most potent antibodies, they cloned them."You clone the really good ones, and then you make lots and lots of them in production facilities and then use as a standard to protect and-or treat Covid-19," Burton said. They've tested the cloned antibodies, or monoclonal antibodies, on animals, and they've yielded positive results. They hope to conduct human testing early next year. When asked if it is similar to antibody treatments from convalescent plasma donations, Burton says what they're making is more efficient and can be produced for masses. He says the monoclonal antibodies could be used as a preventive measure given to uninfected but at-risk people before a vaccine is available, and could even be useful for people that may not respond well to a vaccine. He also says the monoclonal antibodies could be used to design better vaccines by giving researchers a better idea of which antibodies are most effective. 1268

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego teen took a jump when she decided to quit social media. At just 16-years-old, many teens today couldn't think of doing so.Alexa Mendes said she knew she had to cut the cord after recognizing that she was addicted to the likes, shares, and interactions online."It is difficult enough to try and manage our overwhelming lives already filled with extracurriculars, sports teams, clubs, honors societies, difficult classes, insane amounts of homework, the pressures of applying to prestigious universities, and an abundance of other expectations," Mendes writes. "On top of that, we are always thinking about our online profiles."So she curbed her online presence back. In doing so, she learned a lot and turned those lessons into a book: #Unsubscribed: How I am thriving in high school without social media (and you can, too)."It wasn't that difficult. It's something I'm passionate about since it's part of my life and my experience and story to tell," Mendes said. Now, Mendes' message isn't that teens should drop social media entirely. Instead, she hopes her story can help others strike a healthy balance."Over time, I realized that the key wasn’t to abolish my usage completely--it was all about becoming balanced and finding a way to use social media in moderation," she writes. "There are suggestions on how to transition from addiction to moderation — all while maintaining a social life."Mendes' book is available on Amazon. 1469

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego teacher is being honored as November’s SDCCU Classroom Hero. Erin Eickhorst instills the values of Gompers Prep Academy. “I owe it all to my leadership,” says Eickhorst, crediting the school’s new director. “I look at them and they've inspired me from day one. They allowed me to grow this deep passion for not only our students, but for our community and without them I wouldnt be where I am now. I really do owe it all to them and my students.” 485

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Americans are voting once again, and while the 2020 campaign has been contentious, our political process is a matter of perspective.Iraqi immigrant Saba Yousif became a U.S citizen in 2018, along with her parents and four of her five siblings. Yousif will be voting for the first time.Yousif told ABC 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt that due to the persecution back in Baghdad and not having the freedom to truly make a difference in election, this election -- to her -- is “precious.”The American system is something everyone all over the world admires, according to Yousif. She said as Chaldean Iraqis, her family finally feels true freedom.Even her parents are sharing her joy because they will be voting in their first presidential election here. They’ve all enjoyed having the right to express their opinions, have discussions, hear the candidates’ views, and make a choice at the ballot box.“I feel blessed to be a citizen of this country. We left and came here for a reason, and I think the most important is freedom of choice,” Yousif said. 1071
