SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This New Year’s Day organ donor heroes will be honored on the Donate Life Rose Parade Float. One of those heroes is a Everardo Martinez, a San Diego father of three whose life was cut short by a fatal aneurysm. After Martinez passed, his wife Adriana worked closely with Lifesharing San Diego to donate his organs.“It’s comforting, it’s comforting to know my husband lives on through those recipients,” said Adriana. “I’m deeply honored my husband was able to transform their lives.”Everardo was able to save three lives with his selfless gift. His wife and children traveled to Irwindale to help decorate the Lifesharing float that will honor Everardo and 43 other organ donors. Adriana also spent eight hours on a floral portrait of her husband that will be featured on the float. “It’s an honor, a true honor to be able to honor my husband’s legacy and memory,” said Adriana. Adriana says her husband wanted to make a difference, and she couldn’t be more proud of the difference he’s making.Register today to be an organ donor here. 1061

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There is a memorial of candles, notes, and flowers along 4th Avenue near Main Street in Chula Vista. They are in memory of 23-year-old Christina Garcia, who was found dead at a nearby field on Aug. 5th. Chula Vista police say they were called out to 3100 block of Main Street after someone found her body. They say she had an apparent gunshot wound and opened a homicide case.“That afternoon, she wanted to see her daughter and pick up the truck, so it was a brief encounter,” her mother, Lisa Garcia, said. “I expected her to come back, and I wish I took advantage of that situation longer.”Lisa says Christina leaves behind a two-year-old daughter.“I think the saddest thing for me is that her daughter is only going to know her through pictures because she’s so young,” She said. “She’s never going to remember her mom’s touch, her kiss, her voice.”Lisa says her daughter was very likable and smart.“She tested out in the 10th grade and started southwestern college and finished her classes there,” Lisa said. She was also a skilled welder and liked working with her hands. Most recently, they bought a home and worked on remodeling it.“She’s very hands-on, like her mom,” Lisa said, “you know, taking the popcorn ceiling down, remodeling the walls.”She says it’s been tough knowing Christina’s killer has not been caught. Lisa says she has many questions and is cannot find any closure without finding answers.“Was she dumped there? Was she shot there? So my brain is at 100 miles per hour trying to come up with all these scenarios,” she said.Police are asking for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, saying they can even remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers.“There might be information out there that people think is irrelevant,” Lisa said. “But it could be very relevant to law enforcement.” 1845

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three San Diego County high school football teams qualified for the state finals but may not have enough funding to attend the tournament, school officials said Monday.Lincoln High School boys just finished what coach David Dunn is calling a “Cinderella season”. The team has never before qualified for the event.“Just to have the experience and the opportunity to do it, and let alone be the first team to do it, it means a lot,” said T'ray Kirkland, senior player. The Lincoln High Hornets have had a slim roster, injuries, even a forfeited game. They beat Mira Mesa for the CIF championship.“There have been games where we really had to step up. You just see how much heart each and every person on this team has,” said Kirkland.“Their willingness to compete is different than a lot of the other teams that I've had before," Coach Dunn said. The boys have also been competitive academically. The team averages a 3.1 grade point average with as many as eight players holding a 4.0. Lincoln High is scheduled to play Menlo Atherton this weekend in the San Francisco suburb of Redwood City. The game won’t happen if the team doesn’t get more money. Although the state pays for some of the expenses, the team needs the community to step up.“We need this opportunity to really display that the Southeast produces athletes, great young men, and character,” said Kirkland.San Diego High and Escondido’s Orange Glen High also qualified for the state finals and need financial help. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Council is expected to vote Monday on a controversial proposal by a developer to build a large office park on land surrounded on three sides by the Del Mar Mesa Preserve. Residents who live nearby have been fighting the project and hope to convince the councilmembers to block it.The project, called "The Preserve at Torrey Highlands," would go on a piece of land south of Sr-56 at Camino Del Sur. Locals call the property "The Notch" and say it's a mystery why the 11-acre parcel was left out of protected zone when voters approved the Preserve in 1996.The best explanation, several residents told 10News, is that the land was owned by the Catholic Church, which planned to build on the property. The Church project was approved but never built and the Church sold the land in 2015.A spokesperson for the developer, Cisterra, told 10News that the land was always meant for development and that an office park is much-needed in the area: "The Preserve at Torrey Highlands will help grow the innovation economy by creating a place for nearly 2,000 high-quality, high-paying jobs."Opponents say voters intended any development on the land to be low-rise and fit the character of the neighborhood. 1235

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The unofficial start of summer is here in San Diego and that means it’s time to hit the beaches and enjoy some sunshine.Health officials are reminding residents that it’s also time to check the water quality before heading out.The County of San Diego’s Department of Environmental Health checks the water on a regular basis and posts that information online.Due to the need to warn residents if water quality is poor, the county developed the “Check Before You Get In” website. The site allows people to check water conditions at more than 80 local beaches. According to officials, employees of the health department check 85 samples per week from April 1 to October 31.Click here to check out the website and see what the water is like before heading out. 783
