SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man whose car erupted into flames after crashing on the southbound I-805 Thursday morning is recovering after two passersby helped pull him to safety. Dashcam video from a nearby driver shows the moment the small white car suddenly veers to the right, slamming into a pick-up truck at Telegraph Canyon Road. Almost instantly smoke begins to rise from the hood, and then flames."When I saw the smoke we just ran over and saw we had to get him out. We unbuckled him out of the car, carried him out," said Tyrone Crawford. Crawford, a retired Customs and Border Protection officer and the friend he was with, a U.S. Marine, said they didn't hesitate to put their training into action. The two men were able to get the victim safely to the side of the highway, where first responders jumped in to start treating him. The man was alert and talking as he was wheeled into an ambulance.The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash, but all lanes of the SB I-805 were reopened by early afternoon. 1037
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of San Diego County fire departments have sent crews across the state to help with the Woolsey and Camp Fires. But Cal Fire officials tell 10News they're making sure that enough resources are left behind to cover any emergencies that happen here."We have an obligation here to make sure we keep enough strategic reserve to stay safe in San Diego," says Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie.Through a process called "Mutual Aid," Heggie says Cal Fire sent three strike teams, consisting of 15 engines, to help around the state. That leaves 32 engines in San Diego. Heggie says those engines are placed around the county ready to pounce on any fires that spring up."The conditions they've seen up there are very similar to what we're seeing right now," says Heggie. But, he added that all time off had been canceled for Cal Fire employees while San Diego is in a Red Flag Warning."Everyone from the Chief down to the firefighters, they're staying in a heightened state of readiness," he says. "We'll never exceed those thresholds to make sure that we have enough adequate resources available for any fire that starts here in San Diego."Cal Fire's ability to respond quickly was put to the test Monday, when a house fire erupted in Ramona. According to Zillow, million in San Diego can buy a single-family home that has 2,410 square feet, four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. Families in Chula Vista can get more for their money, where million can buy a 3,890 square foot home with five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. On a slightly lighter note, million can typically buy a 1,900 square foot, three bedroom, two bathroom home in Los Angeles, Zillow reports. In the U.S., the typical million home is a detached single-family house with about 2,200 square feet with four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new apartment complex in Pacific Beach is gearing up for its opening, but residents can expect to pay top dollar for all the bells and whistles offered by the complex. The Jefferson, a 3 million complex, is located just off I-5. According to its website, studio apartments range from ,478 to ,617. The largest apartments in the complex with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms range from ,987 to ,103. Those prices are much higher than the typical apartment in Pacific Beach, according to Zillow. Zillow’s rental map shows prices in Pacific Beach ranging from ,425 for a studio to more than ,850 for a three bedroom. Between those two price points, Zillow shows 152 apartments available for rent. One rental manager who spoke with 10News says The Jefferson may have a difficult time finding tenants at those prices. “Tenants, prospective tenants, they're educated. They educate themselves and they do comparative shopping. So if it's too high, you're going to sit empty,” said Jim Vosacek, who runs Western Hills Real Estate Management. According to the University of Southern California Casden Economics Forecast, “even under the best case standard, few units in Southern California are affordable.”By 2020, the report forecasts that average monthly rents will increase by 9 in San Diego County, the highest among all Southern California areas.The report predicts that the San Diego will continue to see economic and population growth over the “foreseeable future” with the economy’s leading sectors continuing to draw a variety of workers.The forecast also shows San Diego’s popularity among older members of the population, including retirees.As a result, housing demand will continue in both the renter and owner-occupied markets, leading rents to increase as vacancy rates remain low.In 2020, the average rent is predicted to be ,187 with a 3.75 percent vacancy rate. 995
