SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With unemployment near record lows through Labor Day, efforts are shifting from helping San Diegans get jobs to helping them land better ones.The San Diego Workforce Partnerships is teaming up with local employers to offer on-the-job training to workers so they can get certified and move up in their careers. The focus is currently on so-called middle-skill occupations, those that require something more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. The state Employment Development Department says the five most in-demand middle-skill occupations in San Diego and Imperial Counties are accounting assistants, teacher assistants, medical assistants, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, and nursing assistants. The EDD says there are currently 2,500 openings for those positions. The Workforce Partnership recently teamed up with First Promise Care Service in El Cajon to offer its caregivers a two- to three-month certification program to become certified nursing assistants. "It does motivate because they know they're not just going to be there," said Dyna Jones, CEO of First Promise. "There's actually a promotion. There's growth, and people are looking for something like that."Jones said caregivers who complete the program could go from earning per hour to as much as as a team lead if they stay with the company. The Workforce Partnership has a new tool for San Diegans to look up information on different jobs, what they pay, and training requirements and opportunities. The county's unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in July, the same as a year earlier. There are still about 57,000 San Diegans who are unemployed. 1683

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men were stabbed and an officer was headbutted after a fight erupted between two groups outside a Gaslamp District nightclub.Two large groups of men were ejected from Phantom nightclub on Fifth Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. and got into a street fight outside, San Diego Police said. During the altercation, two men were stabbed.One of the victims, a 22-year-old man was stabbed in the abdomen and taken to a nearby hospital. The other victim, a 24-year-old, received lacerations to his stomach, arms, and hands. Police say he was uncooperative and refused medical attention. Minutes later, he was contacted at 1200 3rd Avenue and fought with the responding officers, SDPD said.During the altercation, the man headbutted an officer and attempted to gouge out the eyes of another officer, police said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Witness video shows the moment San Diego Police opened fire on a pursuit suspect in Logan Heights Monday.The video starts with the suspect, identified Tuesday as 30-year-old Enrique Aguilar, walking in the middle of the street, it appears toward the direction of police. Yells of "drop the gun" could be heard as Aguilar continues walking down the street.As Aguilar proceeds toward officers, police say he pointed a weapon at officers. They are offering a ,000 reward to anyone who has information that leads to the arrest of the suspect, said Principal David LeMaster. "It starts at home, guys," said one parent. "Stop pointing the fingers at them and step up for yourself and know what your child is doing." There is still a lot of fear in at the school. It's only been one day since someone painted the threatening around campus. Words like "school shooting, Florida was nothing" and "murder, blood, chaos" have parents questioning the safety of their children."These images are quite frightening to be honest with you," Michelle Perry said. Her 15-year-old daughter texted her that morning after she saw the graffiti. "I immediately texted (my daughter) back. I texted her the pictures, I said 'you need to go to the office. You need to figure out what's going on.'"Perry attended the school meeting Tuesday night to talk more about how parents and faculty are going to keep their kids safe. Principal David LeMaster calls the message a hate crime and terroristic threats -- saying the school is working with police to catch the person who did it. A second meeting will be held at the school Thursday at 3 p.m. Parents hope to continue the conversation and brainstorm ways to make sure students stay safe.     1817

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego County breweries were among the fastest growing craft breweries in the country in 2017, according to the Brewers Association.Novo Brazil Brewing Co. in Chula Vista and Bay City Brewing Co. in San Diego both made the list. The list includes breweries across 25 states. Novo was ranked as the 8th and Bay City 28th fastest-growing small breweries.California lays claim to the speediest growth with several breweries listed, according to the association.Median growth for the top 50 fastest-growing breweries between 2016 and 2017 was 216 percent, according to the Brewers Association.
