LOS ANGELES (AP) — A father and a daughter kidnapped a woman in a Las Vegas suburb and brought her to his Southern California house, holding her for at least a week, sexually assaulting her and then leaving her for dead in the desert, authorities said Friday.Stanley Alfred Lawton, 54, and Shaniya Nicole Poche-Lawton, 22, dumped the woman off a highway near Edwards Air Force Base north of Los Angeles, where she was found by military personnel early Wednesday, Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Eduardo Hernandez said at a news conference. The woman in her 40s was reportedly cold and exposed to the elements. She was taken to a hospital and has since been released, Hernandez said. The father and daughter knew the victim, but officials didn't provide a motive for the attack. They kidnapped her by gunpoint in North Las Vegas on Oct. 30 and took her to Lawton's home in Palmdale, California, Hernandez said. They kept her in a room, and at some point, sexually assaulted her, authorities said.Lawton was arrested Wednesday, and his daughter was taken into custody early the next morning. It was not clear if they had lawyers who could speak on their behalf. They each face charges of kidnapping to commit a robbery, attempted murder, kidnapping from outside the state, rape and three counts of first-degree ATM robbery, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. Hernandez did not give details about the robbery.Lawton and Poche-Lawton were being held on .5 million and .5 million, respectively, the district attorney's office said. The father is scheduled to be arraigned Friday. The FBI is investigating the abduction with Los Angeles County and North Las Vegas police. The case may be moved to federal court because the victim had been taken across state lines, but only state charges have been filed so far.North Las Vegas police were gathering information and didn't immediately have comment. Air Force officials could not immediately be reached for comment. 1996

LONDON (AP) — An American tourist from Louisiana helped stop a hammer-wielding thief who unsuccessfully tried to steal the Magna Carta at Salisbury Cathedral, working in tandem with a church employee to prevent the man from escaping.Matthew Delcambre, of New Iberia, Louisiana, told The Associated Press that he and his wife Alexis were sightseeing in the southwestern English city when a man tried to shatter the glass encasing the precious manuscript in the church's Chapter House. After Alexis tried to raise the alarm to others, Delcambre and other bystanders banded together to try to hold the thief back behind the doors of the Chapter House. When the thief pushed past them, the 56-year-old IT expert gave chase into an outer courtyard. He grabbed the man's arm near the courtyard gate and knocked away the hammer. A church employee tackled him and held him down."It wasn't me by myself," he said. "It was completely a group effort."The Magna Carta, which was protected by two layers of thick glass, wasn't damaged.Wiltshire police said Saturday that a 45-year-old man was freed on bail until Nov. 20 as officers continue their investigation.Salisbury Cathedral's Magna Carta is one of four existing specimens of the 1215 charter that established the principle that the king is subject to the law. It is considered the founding document of English law and civil liberties and influenced the creation of the U.S. Constitution. The document, Latin for "Great Charter" was short-lived. Despotic King John, who met disgruntled barons and agreed to a list of basic rights, almost immediately went back on his word and asked the pope to annul it, plunging England into civil war. It was re-issued after the king's death.Even so, its importance cannot be underestimated, as it has inspired everyone from Mahatma Gandhi to Nelson Mandela. Matthew Delcambre, the director for the Center for Business & Information Technologies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, said he has been a bit taken aback by the attention his efforts have earned, but told his story so that his efforts would not be exaggerated at the expense of others.Of all those who played a part in corralling the thief, he credits his wife Alexis first and foremost, since it was she who noticed the thief coming out of the disabled bathroom wielding the hammer and tried to get help. He played down earlier reports which depicted him as the hero, and said the people who should get the credit are cathedral workers and volunteers who tried to protect the Magna Carta."The heroes are the staff employees of the cathedral who protected the document, helped catch the guy and helped retain him until the police got there," he said. "It was a team effort." 2735

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Georgia Engel, who played the charmingly innocent, small-voiced Georgette on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and amassed a string of other TV and stage credits, has died. She was 70.Engel died Friday in Princeton, New Jersey, said her friend and executor, John Quilty. The cause of death was unknown because she was a Christian Scientist and didn't see doctors, Quilty said Monday.Engel was best known for her role as Georgette on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," whose character was improbably destined to marry pompous anchorman Ted Baxter, played by Ted Knight.Engel also had recurring roles on "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Hot in Cleveland." She was a five-time Emmy nominee, receiving two nods for the late Moore's show and three for "Everybody Loves Raymond."Engel's prolific career included guest appearances on a variety of shows, including "The Love Boat," ''Fantasy Island," ''Coach" and "Two and a Half Men." Her "Hot in Cleveland" role reunited her with Betty White, her co-star in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."She appeared on Broadway in plays and musicals including "Hello, Dolly!", "The Boys from Syracuse" and, most recently, "The Drowsey Chaperone" in 2006-07.Engel's final credited television appearance came last year in the Netflix series "One Day at a Time." 1299

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A Panorama City girl is suing the Walt Disney Co. alleging she contracted Legionnaire's disease after a visit to Disneyland in 2017 to celebrate her mother's birthday. The girl's Los Angeles Superior Court negligence suit, filed Wednesday, seeks unspecified damages. The suit was brought on her behalf by her guardian. The suit does not state the girl's age and her lawyer, Joseph Finnerty, could not be immediately reached.A Disney representative could not be reached for comment.RELATED:Two additional Legionnaire's cases found in Disneyland guestsDisneyland shuts down cooling towers following Legionnaire's cases among guestsThe suit states that the girl and her family went to Disneyland on Oct. 13, 2017, where they observed her mother's birthday. Two weeks later, she developed a cough that worsened over time to include chills and a fever, the suit alleges."It seemed no matter what treatments were provided to Liana, she could not get rid of her sickness," the suit states. The girl was examined by an infectious-disease doctor at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital and she was diagnosed with Legionnaire's disease, the suit states. The suit further states that in October 2017, Orange County health officials found several cases of other people who suffered Legionnaire's disease after visits to the Anaheim theme park. Disney linked the source to two cooling towers, but they were inadequately treated so as to eradicate the bacteria, the suit alleges. The girl's health continues to be negatively affected because of her infection, the suit states. 1580

LONDON (AP) — A half-million people in the English city of Liverpool will be regularly tested for COVID-19 in Britain's first citywide trial of widespread, rapid testing that the government hopes will be a new weapon in combatting the pandemic. In a statement Tuesday, the government said that testing would begin later this week at sites throughout the city using various technologies, including new methods that can provide results in an hour or less.Everyone who lives or works in the city in northwestern England will be offered the test, regardless of whether they have symptoms.Through a partnership between Liverpool City Council, NHS Test, and Trace and Ministry of Defence, the government would provide the tests. The government said approximately 2,000 military personnel on Thursday would help plan the logistics and deliver tests."Anyone who tests positive, using either a lateral flow test or an existing swab test, must self-isolate along with their household immediately, and their contacts will be traced," officials stated in the press release. The government said anyone who tests – and contacts required to self-isolate – will be entitled to the £500 Test and Trace Support Payment. On Monday, 18,950 new confirmed cases of coronavirus were recorded in the UK, the BBC reported. 1301
