"It's going to make us a much stronger, much richer nation."The move, which comes on the heels of the administration's steel and aluminum tariffs that also took aim at China, has already been met with threats of retaliation from China and is heightening concerns of a global trade war that could destabilize the global economy -- fears the Trump administration has repeatedly brushed off.Trump on Thursday signed a memorandum announcing the trade actions, invoking Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act, which formed the basis for the administration's investigation.Before signing the measure, Trump lamented the US' multi-hundred billion dollar trade deficit with China and said the action would be "the first of many."Trump prefaced his trade action by insisting he views China as a "friend" and said he has "tremendous respect" for Chinese President Xi Jinping, as he flicked to China's support in pressuring North Korea to denuclearize."They are helping us a lot in North Korea," Trump said. "But we have a trade deficit ... there are many different ways of looking at it, but no matter which way you look at it, it is the largest trade deficit of any country in the history of the world."Trump said the US would continue to engage diplomatically with China to reduce the trade imbalance, even as he signed an action that is likely to exacerbate tensions between the two countries.Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative, said the tariffs would focus on theft of US technologies and said Trump "concluded that we should put in place tariffs on appropriate products" following the investigation."This is an extremely important action. Very significant and very important for the future of the country, really across industries," Lighthizer said.The investigation concluded that China has stolen or coerced US companies into turning over their intellectual property through a series of state-run structural maneuvers, including its requirement that foreign companies partner with Chinese companies to access the Chinese market, said Everett Eissenstat, the deputy director of the National Economic Council for international economic affairs.The investigation also assessed that China has stolen US intellectual property by hacking US computer networks, though senior administration officials said Thursday's tariffs would not account for the value of that intellectual property theft, which they estimated to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars.The incoming tariffs are the most significant to date from a President who campaigned on a promise to correct the US' global trade imbalance, particularly with China, and to revitalize US manufacturing. The move is just the latest sign that Trump is intent on putting his protectionist rhetoric into action despite concerns from economists and financial analysts, including within his own administration.Beyond the threat of a far-reaching trade war, economists have warned US consumers are likely to bear the cost of the tariffs and worries about Chinese retaliation are mounting."A trade war does no good to anyone. There is no winner," China's Premier Li Keqiang said at a news conference in Beijing in anticipation of the Trump administration's tariff action.The Trump administration, though, has said it is simply taking long-overdue action following years of unfair Chinese trading practices that they argue previous administrations have insufficiently countered.Peter Navarro, Trump's hawkish top trade adviser, said the administration had decided on the tariffs in lockstep and said the US opted to take tariff actions after dialogues with China over the last 15 years have failed to produce significant changes in Chinese behavior."Administrations before us and this administration has tried very, very hard to work with the Chinese," Navarro said. "Talk is not cheap. It has been very expensive to the American people."The tariffs will not take immediate effect. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday he will replace his Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin with Ronny Jackson, who currently serves as physician to the President.Trump thanked Shulkin via Twitter for his "service to our country and to our GREAT VETERANS" and said Robert Wilkie, the under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness, will serve as acting secretary until Jackson is confirmed.Jackson, who is an active duty Navy physician, was nominated last week for a military promotion by the President.Shulkin's departure from the administration is a stark reversal of fortunes for the VA leader, who served as undersecretary of health in the Obama administration. He'd been held in high regard by Trump, who publicly praised him and touted a series of legislative wins regarding veterans issues.Trump even joked last year that his signature phrase, "you're fired" would never be used with Shulkin."We'll never have to use those words on our David. Expanding private health care for veterans was a talking point of Trump's on the campaign trail, and a White House priority, and Shulkin's critics have said he was a roadblock to achieving that goal.As the year went on, Shulkin grew increasingly isolated and at odds with top aides, including those in charge of VA communications efforts, was so wide that the secretary had recently been conducting his own crisis communications effort via his personal cell phone, telling reporters that there were political staffers working to oust him.Shulkin's public comments rubbed White House officials, including chief of staff John Kelly, the wrong way. That frustration reached the White House recently, with Trump reportedly floating the idea in private of replacing Shulkin with Energy Secretary Rick Perry.His efforts to turn around the troubled VA were met with acclaim last year. An adult is 18,” she says.The state legislator who wrote the law says he was inspired to act by the shooting in Parkland, Florida, in which a man is accused of killing 17 students and staff members at a school while using an assault rifle. A similar weapon was used by the gunman in the shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue, which killed one person and injured three others.Supporters of the law say it's a common sense regulation to help keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them.Rudolph says California already has the strictest gun laws in the country and that more aren't needed. She also says the law prevents her store from offering the gun safety and training programs for teens and children that are an important factor in creating a culture of responsible gun ownerships. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said this week now is the time for Congress to act in order to enact legislative and regulatory reforms as the agency says it is strapped for cash.DeJoy’s statement comes as Senator Joe Manchin, D-WV, said in a letter to Dejoy that USPS locations in his state are slated to close or reducing hours. Manchin said he is concerned that the postal service will be less accessible to his constituents.“As a public service, USPS is legally required to deliver mail, to all postal addresses in all regions, at a flat rate, no matter how far it may have to travel,” Manchin said in a letter to DeJoy. “The Service’s affordability and continued accessibility are essential for rural communities, especially those with high rates of poverty. In many areas where reliable broadband is not an option, the Postal Service is their only link to medicine, social security checks, and family members.In recent years, the USPS has seen a decrease in mail volume, going from 170.9 billion pieces of mail in 2010 to 142.6 billion in 2019. Meanwhile, USPS continues to operate routes six days a week.To combat the decrease in revenue, DeJoy wants to implement reforms and cut overtime from the budget. The moves could cause delays in shipments, however.“The Postal Service has spent the last four years unsuccessfully trying to obtain reform legislation from Congress and pricing reform from the PRC, while remaining focused on the efficiency of our operations,” DeJoy said. “Given our current situation, it is critical that the Postal Service take a fresh look at our operations and make necessary adjustments.
