(CNN) -- Ikea is shutting down its only furniture factory in the United States.The Swedish company will end production this December at its plant in Danville, Virginia. Operations will move to Europe, where the company says it can cut costs."We made every effort to improve and maintain the competitiveness of this plant, but unfortunately the right cost conditions are not in place to continue production in Danville," site manager Bert Eades said in a statement.The Danville facility, which opened in 2008, employs 300 workers. Wooden products including shelves and storage units are made at the plant.In justifying its decision, Ikea pointed to raw material prices, which it said are higher in the United States than Europe. Ikea operates plants in European countries including Poland, Russia and Sweden.Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, tweeted in 2018 that workers at the Danville plant were worried about how tariffs would affect costs. Kaine said the plant imports many raw materials.Since Kaine visited the plant, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on imports of particle board, a common Ikea material, from China.Ikea said Tuesday the decision to close the plant was not related to tariffs. It said that particle board used at the Danville plant is purchased from US suppliers.Ikea owns manufacturing facilities in nine countries, employing roughly 20,000 people.A recent shift in Ikea's retail strategy to adapt to the growth of online shopping has led to job cuts in other parts of the business.The company has been investing in online pickup services and digital fulfillment centers, and in 2017 bought TaskRabbit, an online marketplace for finding gig workers. It's also been opening smaller stores in big cities to attract younger shoppers.Ingka Group, the Swedish holding company that owns and operates most of Ikea's stores, said last year that it would lay off about 7,500 employees, or 5% of its global workforce, and build 30 smaller stores in major cities around the world in the next few years.The company said it could ultimately create 11,500 jobs as a result of this shift. 2122

Robert Flaxman admitted in a Boston courtroom he agreed to pay Rick Singer, the head of a college admissions company, ,000 to partake in the college entrance exam cheating scheme for his daughter. Flaxman’s daughter, who was accepted to USD but did not attend, had a proctor to boost her ACT scores, prosecutors said. (KGTV) — Hundreds of thousands of unemployment debit cards in California have been frozen due to fraud, according to the state's Employment Development Department.The EDD says 350,000 debit cards have been frozen because of a variety of fraud indicators, including a high number of claims at a single address. It wasn't clear how much the debit cards were worth, but law enforcement officials say they've uncovered fake cards amounting to ,000 each, KABC reported."The Department’s top priority is to quickly verify the identity of any claimants in this group that may have been impacted by scammer attacks, while we work to shut down the potentially fraudulent claims," the EDD said.Impacted EDD claimants who may have their cards frozen are advised to take the following action:"Claimants who receive an email, text message, or mailed notice from EDD requesting them to provide identity verification documents should visit EDD’s website to login or register for a UI Online account and upload the documents through the Document Upload feature. The EDD has implemented various methods to help expedite the verification process. Payments will be reestablished for claimants verified to be legitimate and accounting will be done to clear them from any connection to a possible fraudulent claim initiated in their name or involving their address.For claimants who receive an email, text message, or mailed notice and need assistance in providing the identity documents, a new AskEDD dropdown menu has been implemented for them to provide contact information following these steps:Select the category 'Unemployment Insurance Benefits'Select the sub-category of 'Payments'Select the topic “Frozen EDD Debit Card” and press Continue to provide contact and claim information.For claimants who can’t access funds on their EDD Debit Card and have not received any messages from the EDD, it’s likely that Bank of America has frozen the card because of a suspected transaction, and EDD does not need to verify their identity. (KGTV) — A National City woman is heartbroken after she was forced to leave her beloved fish at Denver International Airport. It was supposed to be a happy homecoming for Lanice Powless and her best friend."I've taken him everywhere with me," she said.But Wednesday, the University of Colorado sophomore left Denver without "Cassie," her pink, male beta fish."This lady was just not having it," Powless said. "So the supervisor comes and she said 'Unfortunately, you cannot bring fish onto Southwest Airlines,'" Powless said.Her freshman year in Colorado, Powless admitted she was lonely and wanted a pet. She considered getting a dog or cat. But her mother convinced her that a fish would be a better fit. She got Cassie at the local Petco, but did not realize she would end up falling in love with him. "I put my finger in there, he come up and nibble my finger. He was a cool fish," she said. "I even got him a heater, because it gets so cold in Colorado."According to the TSA website, live fish are allowed on board as a carry on. Powless said she never had any problems bringing Cassie along on her usual Southwest flight. But according to the airline, only small cats and dogs that fit in an under-seat carrier are allowed."I have traveled with it. I had it in my container too. Maybe they just didn't make a big deal out of it at the time?" Powless said.But this time, she said she was utterly humiliated. When she asked Southwest staff if she could leave Cassie on their counter so a friend can come a pick him up in half an hour, they denied her. So she frantically started to look around the airport for a new owner. She eventually found a traveler on another airline that allows fish on board, to care for Cassie on her behalf. But airport staff separated them, so Powless never got her name. "They were not allowing us to converse at all because they were thinking we were going to do some secret exchange throughout the airport," Powless said. "Even after I was no longer in possession of the fish, they still continued to have security around us, and follow us through the airport and escorted onto our plane, as if we brought something bad onto the airport," she added.Powless said airport staff made her feel like a criminal. Now spending winter break back in National City, she is the one who feels like a fish out of water, lost without her little sidekick swimming by her side. "Everyone's laughing at me. Yes, it's a fish. I know. But dang, it was my pet. And just because it wasn't a cat or dog, it wasn't as important?" Powless said.10News reached out to Southwest Airlines. A spokeswoman said airport staff are trained and in this case, followed protocol. She said counter staff offered a later flight so Powless could make arrangements for her fish, but said she did not take the offer.
