OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A World War II veteran got a big surprise Saturday morning when dozens of cars drove up to her Oceanside home to celebrate her 98th birthday.Corporal Jeri Marcot wasn't expecting too much on her birthday — maybe a call or two. ."I woke up this morning and said, 'Oh well, it's my birthday,' but wow, you made it a wow event!" Marcot said in amazement.With the help of Honor Flight San Diego, her family set up a surprise.She was taken to her birthday throne, and car after car, she waved to many of her friends and family."Today is great," Marcot's granddaughter, Janelle Stettler, said. "It's another way we are getting around the COVID restrictions where we're having a drive-by parade to celebrate her birthday,"The 98-year-old wears many hats: mother, grandmother, book worm, but also, one of America's first-ever female Marines."I was 18 when I went in the service in WWII, so that seems like a long, long time ago," Marcot laughed.Back in 1944, enlisting in the Marine Corps as a young woman was not the "cool" thing to do. Marcot says women were barely recognized as being part of the Armed Forces. But the aviation lover knew it was her duty. Since she had already taken flying lessons before enlisting, she ended up working on airplanes.Her two-and-a-half years in the service inspired people like Holly Shaffner, who served 24 years in the US Coast Guard."These women Marines, they lead the charge," Shaffner said. She now works for Honor Flight San Diego."We served, and it was great," Marcot said. "It was our turn to do that, so I'm happy I got the chance."Even after her military life, Marcot continued a life of service as a children's librarian until her retirement."She was always at the forefront," Marcot's daughter, Linda, said. "Forefront of the Marines, the forefront of starting a library in El Centro. [She's] one of these women that is an inspiration."She is such an inspiration that many of her fellow WWII veterans came by to thank her for her service and wish her a happy birthday."Look at all my friends," Marcot said. "Oh my goodness, you could write a book about all of this."Maybe when the Corporal returns to her usual peace and quiet life, the former librarian will get around to writing down her own amazing life story. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - It’s been nine months of physical therapy since a great white shark attacked Keane Webre-Hayes. “My love of the ocean is much more than my fear of sharks.” Webre-Hayes tells 10News. He’s been determined to get back into the ocean. While it’s been a long process, he finally made it out spearfishing. Josh Fleming owns Meric Spearfishing in Oceanside, he has been helping get Webre-Hayes ready to dive back into the ocean. “He gave me a gift certificate saying whatever it costs and he got me all geared up.” Fleming gave Webre-Hayes a new diving suit, speargun and other gear to help him prepare for his spearfishing adventures. Webre-Hayes was attacked by the great white shark during his first time lobster diving. He underwent hours of surgery, got one thousand stitches and has continued months of physical therapy. He’s been through intensive therapy at Equinox and Nakoa in Carlsbad. “I love the ocean it’s my second home basically.” Webre-Hayes tells 10News. The shark broke the top of his humorous, tore off his rotator cuff, broke the scapula in three different places and he’s missing parts of his deltoid and lateral muscles. Webre-Hayes tells 10News, “It was a gnarly bite and its crazy that I’m going to be throwing out the first pitch at the Padres game.” Before spearfishing came baseball. He was a left-handed pitcher until his left side was attacked back in September. (CNS) - Police identified a 43-year-old man armed with a machete who allegedly stabbed a police dog and broke a patrol vehicle's window in Oceanside.About 5 p.m. Tuesday, an officer was inside a vehicle, stopped at a traffic light on College Boulevard and Plaza Drive, when he saw the suspect, Noomane Trabelsi, across the street yelling at him, according to Oceanside Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Bussey.The suspect allegedly approached the vehicle swinging a machete and broke the driver's side window, Bussey said.The officer suffered minor injuries and called for assistance. A perimeter was established, and the suspect was seen near the Mossy Nissan dealership, at 3535 College Blvd., and officers tried to make contact with him, according to Bussey.Trabelsi went into a nearby ravine, prompting officers to deploy a police dog, according to Bussey.Trabelsi allegedly stabbed the dog, named Chico, in his head and then stabbed himself multiple times in his stomach, Bussey said. Chico was taken to a veterinarian and is expected to recover, according to Bussey.Officers, assisted by a San Diego County Sheriff's Department helicopter, searched for Trabelsi for two hours in tough terrain, according to Bussey.Trabelsi was located, arrested and taken to Scripps La Jolla to be treated for the self-inflicted injuries, Bussey said. 1381

OCEANSIDE (CNS) - Police responded to a reported shooting behind Oceanside High School early Saturday but weren't able to locate any potential suspects or victims, an officer said.Dispatchers received several calls around 2:30 a.m. reporting the sound of gunshots near the intersection of Division Street and Central Avenue, Oceanside Police Lt. Kedrick Sadler said. Officers headed to the scene and were able to find shell casings on the ground in the area, indicating a shooting had occurred, but couldn't find anyone associated with the incident, Sadler said.A vehicle reportedly was seen speeding from the area, but police could not provide a description. Investigators believe the shooting may be gang-related, Sadler said. 741
