SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new study says that Millennials are leaving their jobs mainly because they're looking for more meaning in what they do.The study, by the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, found that 51.9% of Millennials say they're thinking of leaving their job in the next six months.Of the ones who felt that way, their main reason for wanting to leave is a lack of meaning or purpose in their current job."They want to understand exactly what product or service their company provides and how it makes their community better," says Chamber VP of Research Sean Kerafin, who wrote the study."They can't find all of their value in a job simply from a paycheck," Kerafin says. "They have to understand the bigger picture."Kerafin says that's an essential lesson for local employers to know since Millennials make up 39.7% of the workforce. That's more than any other generation.Kerafin says companies need to emphasize a culture that is "Purpose-Driven" over one that prioritizes profit if they want to attract and retain Millennials.Other findings in the study, which is based on interviews with 400 Millennials in San Diego, show that they want to work for a company where there is an opportunity to grow from within.The survey found that 22% of Millennials cite professional development as a top driver of satisfaction, compared to just 5.8% who cite office perks."They come from a generation of participation trophies and being told they can do anything they put their mind to, and they believe it," Kerafin says. "The truth is they can if they're supported."Kerafin says companies that have excellent mentoring and development programs are more likely to keep Millennials around longer.The study also found that 65.3% of Millennials are satisfied with their job. But even that may not be enough to keep them in San Diego.According to the survey, 44% of Millennials are "very likely" to leave San Diego in the next two years. They say a lack of affordable housing is the main reason.The Chamber says local government leaders can help businesses by incentivizing more housing. 2087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A hiker who thought he discovered a puppy along a San Diego trail in March actually ended up taking in a coyote pup.San Diego Humane Society said the man was walking his dog on March 22 in Tierrasanta when he thought he had discovered an abandoned puppy. He ended up bringing the animal home and calling the Humane Society to report his discovery.Humane Law Enforcement found that the puppy wasn't a pooch at all, but actuallyin fact a coyote pup.RELATED: Rattlesnake season officially begins in SoCalOfficers brought the little coyote to the society's Project Wildlife, which works to rehabilitate wildlife for release back into the wild. The pup was then transferred for care at Fund for Animals in Ramona.SDHS said the pup's mother may have been moving the den when the hiker discovered the animal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new leadership course created by a San Diego entrepreneur is breaking down barriers for minority women in business.Christelyn Karazin grew up in Los Angeles County, where she said she didn't see a lot of representation in the classroom."A lot of times I would be the only Black person in the classroom, the only Black person anywhere," Karazin said.She said she learned to get comfortable in a predominantly White world."I graduated from Loyola Marymount University as a Communications Major and graduated Cum Laude. I thought I had all the skills I needed to do really well and then I met my boss from hell," Karazin said solemnly.At the first "get to know your team" lunch, her boss said she was "lucky" to get the salary she was hired with and told the group how much she made, which was more than her colleagues. Karazin said she felt cut down at every turn.Her parents didn't have knowledge in this arena. She said her father was a sharecropper's son with an eighth-grade education and her mother was a schoolteacher.She was missing a rudder to navigate office politics, giving her the idea to launch a leadership course. It would teach other women what she's learned through decades of trials and tribulations."A big part of The Pink Pill is about learning the game and I organized it based on game pieces in chess... The king is a hierarchy management style, with very direct communication. I have a direct communication style but not everybody does." Karazin said knowing the communication style of your bosses and leveraging that will propel you upward.Lean In's State of Black Women in Corporate America Study published in 2020 shows Black women are severely underrepresented in senior management roles.Highlighting the importance of tools that help underrepresented communities rise. The Pink Pill for Business launched online on June 15."We have hundreds of people enrolled now," Karazin said. "It gives me such pleasure that the things I have went through, my failures, and this horrible experience was turned into something amazing." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local company is combining old and new technology to try and help the military cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a disorder that some develop after experiencing a shocking or dangerous event, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. San Diego-based Baslyne partnered with medical technology company WAVi to measure the strength and quickness of the brain’s response in members of the military. Together, the companies are using an electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure brain activity, combined with a specialized test to measure response to various tones.While this technology has been used to understand concussions in young athletes, Baslyne's CEO Tom Kinder said they are now using it to understand PTSD in our military.“It’s probably the most important thing we’re doing,” said Kinder. “We’re looking at brain wave indicators that are showing [or] have symptoms of certain aspects of PTSD.”The test can be as quick as four minutes. It gathers real-time information about your brain performance.“We collect brain voltage information [and] evoke potentials where we give the brain a signal and see how quick it responds,” said WAVi CEO Dr. David Oakley. Oakley said the goal is to do the test on members of the military pre-deployment and track them through their life to find indicators of PTSD.“[It’s] a game changer. If we have enough data, we’d be able to tell if they’re the same as when they were when they deployed,” Oakley said.Kinder said they have worked with a couple hundred veterans so far, mostly with private doctors.Army veteran Steven Padilla served in Iraq. In 2009, he was tasked with looking for roadside bombs. During one mission, he saw a friend get blown up by an IED.“I was supposed to be in the truck,” he said. Padilla said he got switched to a different one 15 minutes prior to the blast. “With my therapist, we found that was kind of my triggering point for PTSD,” Padilla said.According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, up to 20 percent of those who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD in a given year. He went through the WAVi test using the EEG during a demonstration at Cal State San Marcos. “His brain voltage was a little on the low side,” Oakley said after the test. “His brain speed was a little on the slow side.” Neither of those things surprised Padilla because of his past experiences. He sees a benefit to using the technology on members of the military.“I also think it would [have been] beneficial for my PAs and the doctors that were seeing me to possibly help me before I hit that wall,” Padilla said. He believes the test would also help in the long run with treatments and filing disabilities.The FDA has cleared the technology. The cost of the test can range between to 0, depending if you’re an individual or in a group. It is not always covered by insurance.“If we can track 500 people over three to four years of deployment, then that’s the data set we’re looking for,” Oakley said. “I really think it’s important for you to have a stable and successful career, you need to be at your best. If this is one way to do that, I think it’s a good decision,” Padilla said. 3263

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A resident inside an Encanto home opened fire on an intruder Wednesday, San Diego Police said.The victim first vandalized a car in the 6800 block of Charlene Ave. in the Broadway Heights section of Encanto, according to police.Police believe the victim then used a rock to break into a home where people were inside. One person was armed and fired a shot at the intruder.The victim was taken to the hospital. He may be related to the people in the home, and may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.Officers did not release the victim’s identity or condition. 612
