SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University astronomers played a role in the recent discovery of a third planet within the Kepler-47 planetary system.A team of researchers, led by astronomers from SDSU, discovered a new Neptune-size planet orbiting the system's two suns between two previously discovered planets.The planet, named Kepler-47d, was discovered using a method called, "transit method," according to to university. The method measures a level of brightness to help detect masses. "If the orbital plane of the planet is aligned edge-on as seen from Earth, the planet can pass in front of the host stars, leading to a measurable decrease in the observed brightness," a release from the school describes.RELATED: Researchers share photo of a black hole — the first ever in historyPreviously, the planet's signal was too weak to detect.“We saw a hint of a third planet back in 2012, but with only one transit we needed more data to be sure,” SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, the paper’s lead author, said in the release. “With an additional transit, the planet’s orbital period could be determined, and we were then able to uncover more transits that were hidden in the noise in the earlier data.”Kepler-47d is about seven times the size of Earth and takes 87 days to orbit around its suns.“We certainly didn’t expect it to be the largest planet in the system. This was almost shocking,” said William Welsh, SDSU astronomer and the study’s co-author.The entire Kepler-47 system itself is interesting as well. With two suns, it's the only known multi-planet circumbinary system. The system is extremely compact and would fit inside the orbit of Earth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a man who was trying to sell basketball tickets Friday robbed a victim near San Diego State University as the NCAA basketball tournament was underway.The robbery happened about 11 a.m. in the east alley of 5100 College Ave., police said. The location is behind the ARCO gas station at the corner of Montezuma Rd.Officers said the suspect stole the victim’s money and may have been carrying a small knife. The victim was not hurt.The suspect ran toward the Aztec Student Union and was last seen near Campanile Drive.Police said the suspect is a black man in his late teens, about six-feet tall and 120 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting Monday, CVS Pharmacy will begin giving COVID-19 vaccines to staff and residents at California's long term care facilities. On Dec. 18, the first shot was given by a CVS employee at a nursing home in Connecticut."We'll be putting 9,000 vaccinators on the road to give those vaccines across the country," Jonathan Roberts, Vice President of CVS Health, said then.Ten days later, CVS pharmacy will begin its 12-week vaccination program at California's skilled nursing facilities and assisted living centers. The company expects to give the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to around 700,000 people at 15,000 facilities across the state."Retail pharmacies are the foundation of the approach here, both because we are convenient and we're everywhere," Dr. Troy Brennan, Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health, said.Earlier this month, the federal government awarded Walgreens and CVS contracts to roll out the vaccines because of already existing infrastructure and staff.
