LONDON (AP) — An artist has erected a statue of a Black Lives Matter protester atop the plinth in the English city of Bristol once occupied by the toppled statue of a slave trader. Marc Quinn created the likeness of Jen Reid, a protester photographed standing on the plinth after demonstrators pulled down the statue of Edward Colston and dumped it in Bristol's harbor on June 7. The statue, titled "A Surge of Power (Jen Reid)" was erected before dawn on Wednesday without approval from city officials. Colston was a 17th-century trader who made a fortune transporting enslaved Africans across the Atlantic to the Americas. His money funded schools and charities in Bristol, 120 miles (195 kilometers) southwest of London. 731

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) — California has destroyed more than 1.1 million illegal marijuana plants across 455 grow sites as part of the state's annual campaign against illegal cannabis.Over 13 weeks, the state conducted operations in 29 counties to eradicate the plants, arresting 140 individuals and seizing 174 weapons in the process. This year's campaign was also complicated by coronavirus precautions and wildfires throughout the state."Illegal marijuana planting risks public safety, endangers public health, and devastates critical habitats and wildlife," said California Attorney General Becerra. "Every year, the California Department of Justice works with federal, state, and local partners to hold illegal growers accountable and reclaim our public lands. I want to thank our CAMP teams for their resilience and commitment during this tumultuous year. Between COVID-19 and wildfires, the 2020 CAMP season was no cakewalk, but as a result of their hard work, more than one million illegal marijuana plants were eradicated."According to the Associated Press, the largest of this year's busts was in Riverside County where 293,000 plants were seized. The state says many of these illegal grow sites were loaded with trash and banned pesticides, which can find ways into the state's waterways. Illegal growers also disrupt the natural flow of water by creating irrigation systems, endangering nearby wildlife and plants, the state added. 1445

Looking for a holiday gift to take someone's mind off all the problems on Earth this year? With the pandemic spreading across the globe, it might be great if you could buy a place on another planet.Groupon claims you can do just that.Mel Winter was looking for deals on Groupon when she came upon the most bizarre deal she had ever seen."It was, 'Buy an acre of land from Mars,'" she said. "And I thought, 'How would that work?'"It was listed as just and even comes with an ownership deed.Winter was perplexed."At first I wondered, 'Would my acre appreciate if they land on Mars. Would they put a building on my land?'" she said. "And then I thought, 'Wait a minute, who owns Mars?'"Reminiscent of "name a star" offersIf this sounds vaguely family, it might be because you remember radio commercials that claimed you could buy a star and have that star named after you or a family member.Astronomer Dean Regas told us the International Astronomical Union is the only group that can name anything in outer space.Offers to name a star for a fee don't meet their requirements. Nor does buying a piece of Mars, which no one on Earth owns, meaning you cannot legally purchase a piece of it.But with a pandemic, protests and anger across the globe these days, Regas thinks Mars might be a great place to visit."Going to Mars is one of those things that could bring people together, and make us say this is something that humans have been striving to do, and we can do it," he said.As for whether this offer is legitimate, the fine print says it all, explaining that it is a novelty gift "for entertainment purposes only."So it's not a scam: You will get a certificate with your name on it.But you really don't own any land there, which means you can forget about flying to Mars to visit your new home.As always, don't waste your money.___________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. LOS ANGELES (AP) — California health officials Tuesday urged consumers to stop vaping marijuana or tobacco products until investigators determine why hundreds of people nationwide have been sickened after using the devices.Ninety people with a history of vaping have been hospitalized for severe breathing problems and lung damage in the state, and two people have died. With no known cause, officials say consumers should refrain from vaping of any kind until investigations are completed."We are seeing something that we have not seen before," Acting State Public Health Officer Charity Dean said in a statement. "There are numerous unknown factors at this time, and due to the uncertainty of the exact cause, it is our recommendation that consumers refrain from vaping until the investigation has concluded."RELATED: Second vaping-related death in Kansas brings nationwide total to nineOver 500 cases have been reported across the U.S., and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating the mysterious outbreak but has not yet identified a common electronic cigarette or ingredient as the culprit in the rash of illnesses.Symptoms can include chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, fever and weight loss.RELATED: 11 San Diego illnesses linked to vaping, officials sayIn its health advisory, the state Public Health Department specifically warned against using cannabis products from illegal dispensaries that could be holding tainted oil."Illegal cannabis dispensaries sell unregulated and untested cannabis products and absolutely should not be used," the agency said.RELATED: El Cajon to consider city ban on vapingLast week, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the state will spend million on a public awareness campaign about the dangers of vaping nicotine and cannabis products and step up efforts to halt the sale of illicit products. The Associated Press reported earlier this month that shops in downtown Los Angeles are openly selling packaging and hardware that can be used to produce counterfeit marijuana vapes that have infiltrated the state's cannabis marketplace. 2128

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Disgraced former film producer Harvey Weinstein -- who was already charged in Los Angeles with sex-related charges involving three women -- was charged Friday with sexually assaulting two other women in Beverly Hills.Los Angeles County prosecutors filed three new counts each of forcible rape and forcible oral copulation against Weinstein, who is behind bars in New York after being convicted there of sexually assaulting two women. The latest charges involve the alleged rape of a woman at a hotel in Beverly Hills between September 2004 and September 2005 and two alleged attacks on a woman in November 2009 and November 2010 at a hotel in Beverly Hills, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.Weinstein was charged Jan. 6 with one count each of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by use of force and sexual battery by restraint in connection with alleged crimes involving two women in 2013, and prosecutors subsequently filed a charge of sexual battery by restraint in May involving a third woman at a Beverly Hills hotel in May 2010.Weinstein, 68, could face up to 140 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the District Attorney's Office.Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said in a written statement that she is "thankful to the first women who reported these crimes and whose courage have given strength to others to come forward.""The willingness of these latest victims to testify against a powerful man gives us the additional evidence we need to build a compelling criminal case," the county's top prosecutor said.In July, the District Attorney's Office announced that it had filed court papers to move the extradition process forward, and an extradition hearing is set Dec. 11 in Buffalo. It remains unclear exactly how soon Weinstein will be brought to Los Angeles County. The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills police departments and the District Attorney's Bureau of Investigation. 2050
