BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese leaders on Wednesday met with visiting Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and discussed advancing bilateral relations.Wu Bangguo, chairman of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, the country's top legislature, said China and Italy both faced severe challenges and new opportunities as the international situation was undergoing profound changes.As the two countries shared a wide range of common interests, Wu said, it was in the fundamental interests of both peoples to develop China-Italy ties, which also worked for world peace and development.As this year saw the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations, the two countries should maintain exchanges and dialogues at all levels, take care of each other's major concerns and deepen political trust, Wu said.Wu proposed all-round trade and economic cooperation, particularly in the fields of environment, science and technology, small and medium-sized businesses.Wu called on the two countries to step up communication and coordination under the China-EU and Asia-Europe frameworks and the international organizations like the United Nations and Group 20 in a bid to build a fair and reasonable international political and economic system.Napolitano, on his first visit to China as Italian head of state, said Italy appreciated China's remarkable economic and social development.The 85-year-old underscored Italy's commitment to developing ties with China, saying Italy and Europe could not develop without building closer links with China.Napolitano said Italy would take care of China's major concerns, enhance trade and economic cooperation and expand exchanges of visits.

HANGZHOU, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) working in the country's non-public economic sector to work hard to make their companies into advanced and excellent businesses.The call was made by Li Yuanchao, chief of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, during a two-day study tour to Zhejiang Province, one of the regions where the non-public economic sector has been highly developed, on east China coast.The tour ended Friday.During his stay in Zhejiang, Li visited a number of non-public businesses in two cities of Huzhou and Hangzhou in order to gain a first-hand information regarding how CPC members in those ventures have been doing under a Party campaign which encourages CPC members to excel at their workposts.While addressing a symposium held Friday in Hangzhou, the provincial capity, Li said the non-public sector was "an important force for developing the socialist economy with Chinese characteristics."Li added that Party organizations and its members at non-public enterprises should try to ensure that their firms take a correct orientation of development.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday urged European political and business leaders not to join the "chorus" on pressuring China on the appreciation of the Renminbi, or RMB.China's trade surplus was explained by the specific structures of the economies involved in international trade instead of the exchange rate of the RMB, Wen said at the Sixth China-EU Business Summit here."The (past) appreciations of the RMB did not lead to any changes in the trend (of China recording trade surplus)," Wen said, referring to the fact that China continued to record trade surpluses after it initiated an exchange rate reform in 1994 although the RMB has appreciated by an accumulated 55 percent since then. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao addresses the 6th China-European Union Business Summit in Brussels, capital of Belgium, Oct. 6, 2010.China also continued to record trade surpluses against the United States after it initiated a second exchange rate reform in 2005 to allow the RMB to appreciate 22 percent against the U.S. dollar since then, Wen said."The trade issue should not be politicized. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Property prices in 70 major Chinese cities rose 9.1 percent year on year in September, the lowest growth rate so far this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Friday.The rate was down 0.2 percentage points from the 9.3-percent increase in August, but prices were up 0.5 percent month on month, a statement on the NBS website said.New home prices climbed 11.3 percent year on year in September, up 0.5 percent from August.Prices for second-hand homes were up 6.2 percent from a year earlier, a rise of 0.5 percent from August.Real estate investment continued to expand in the first three quarters, with the total standing at 3.4 trillion yuan (511.4 billion U.S. dollars), up 36.4 percent from the same period in 2009, the statement said.The property price growth rate peaked this year at 12.8 percent in April.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China welcomed the World Trade Organization's (WTO) ruling that United States imposition of anti-dumping and countervailing duties on four types of Chinese imports was inconsistent with WTO regulations, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Saturday.The four categories of Chinese imports include standard steel pipe, rectangular steel pipe, laminated woven sacks, and off-road tires, according to an online statement posted on the MOC's website.In a report released Friday, the WTO's dispute settlement body found that the U.S. department of Commerce had acted inconsistently with WTO rules on five elements of the case, which China filed to the WTO in 2008.The U.S. should conduct trade remedy investigations strictly in accordance with the WTO regulations, an unnamed official from the MOC's Department of Treaty and Law said in the statement.However, China was also concerned over some views and rulings made by the WTO expert panel, and would handle issues such as complaints according to WTO disputes settlement procedures, said the official.
