GUANGZHOU, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called for more efforts in improving the country's innovation capabilities to accelerate the transformation of economic growth pattern.Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while making an inpsection tour to south China's Guangdong Province from Thursday to Sunday."Indigenous innovation is the way out for an expedited transformation of the economic growth pattern," said Li, who told the local government officials to persist in the transformation of the economic growth pattern as a key element and strategic step in implementing the scientific outlook on development.Li called on the local authorities to make great efforts in expanding the culture sector and get inspriration from doing so to keep improving quality and efficiency of economic development, trying hard to find new ways for China's sound and fast development of economy and society in the post-crisis era after the global financial downturn.Li hoped Guangdong to pay equal emphasis on construction of iconic cultural projects and on building of cultural life at grassroots level. Efforts should be made to explore new ways for advancing administration of public cultural organizations and ways of service, to greatly enrich spiritual life of the broad masses of the people, he said.Li stressed that it is imperative to improve mechanism of cultural market and establish platforms for evaluation of cultural assets, trading of property rights and venture capital investment in areas where conditions become mature."Pricing of cultural products should also be perfected so that more social funds are attracted to the cultural sector," said Li.During his inspection tour in Guangdong, Li visited places including Guangzhou, the provincial capital, Yangjiang and Shenzhen, and inspected enterprises, units of publicity and culture, as well as construction sites of venues for the 16th Asian Games scheduled for Nov.12-27.

HONG KONG, April 16 (Xinhua) -- A volunteer from Hong Kong who lost his life on Wednesday when rescuing others in the earthquake- hit Qinghai province of China, has been recommended for a gold medal for bravery at home, local authority said on Friday.Wong Fu-wing, a 46-year-old volunteer, escaped from the earthquake on Wednesday morning but returned to rescue the trapped orphans and teachers in the orphanage where he worked in Yushu county of Qinghai province. He was critically injured by falling debris in a powerful aftershock.Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs Bureau of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, said on Friday that Wong has been recommended for the Medal for Bravery of Hong Kong.The Medal for Bravery (Gold), created in 1997, is the first rank in the Order of the Medal for Bravery, awarded for acts of gallantry of the greatest possible heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.Chief Secretary Hengry Tang Ying-yen said Thursday that Wong's selfless sacrifice deserved the highest respect and expressed condolences to his family.Wong's family members departed from Hong Kong to the disaster zone of Qinghai province on Thursday to collect his remains. An officer from Hong Kong's Beijing Office was heading to Qinghai on Friday to meet Wong's family and assist local authorities. The Immigration Department of Hong Kong has offered help to the deceased's family members in Hong Kong.The death toll climbed to 1,144 and another 417 people remained missing as of 5 p.m. Friday, after a devastating earthquake shook a Tibetan area in northwest China's Qinghai Province.The 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which shook the Yushu County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday, has left 11,744 people injured, including 1,192 serious cases.

YUSHU, Qinghai, April 20 (Xinhua) -- The death toll has climbed to 2,064 from a devastating earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai Province, with 175 people still missing, the rescue headquarters said Tuesday.As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, the 7.1-magnitude quake, which struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday, had also left 12,135 injured, of whom 1,434 were in serious condition, the rescue headquarters said.
