LA MESA (CNS) - A 41-year-old man was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of driving under the influence when he struck and seriously injured a pedestrian at a La Mesa intersection, police said.The collision happened around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Grossmont Center Drive and Center Drive, La Mesa Police Lt. Brian Stoney said.A man was attempting to cross eastbound on Grossmont Center Drive within a marked crosswalk, but he did not have the right-of-way when he started crossing against a "do not walk" signal, Stoney said.At the same time, a man driving a 2004 Nissan SUV was heading eastbound on Center Drive and ran a red light when he turned right onto Grossmont Center Drive and struck the pedestrian, the lieutenant said.The victim -- believed to be in his 50s -- was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, including a fractured lower right leg and a fractured hip, Stoney said, adding that the man did not have identification on him and officers were unable to identify him Tuesday night.Investigators arrested the SUV driver, 41-year-old Brandon Michael West of Poway, on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs causing serious bodily injury.West is on probation for a previous DUI and has prior drug and alcohol- related arrests, Stoney said.He was booked into San Diego Central Jail and was being held in lieu of 0,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon. 1441

(AP) — The hue and cry over the placement of a bright American flag graphic on police cars has leaders in a small coastal Southern California city considering whether to tone down the design.The Laguna Beach City Council will decide Tuesday night whether to keep the current logo or choose an alternative.Some residents feel the red, white and blue design is too aggressive while others are surprised anyone would object to the American flag.Mayor Pro Tem Steve Dicterow told the Los Angeles Times the council is simply facing "a very narrow decision" about the brightness of the colors, but that the issue has devolved into a broader national conversation about patriotism.He said he has received hundreds of emails from people around the country, mostly in support of keeping the flag designs on the car.The council agreed earlier this year to repaint its squad cars in black and white with the stars and stripes running through the word "police" on the doors. The city has 11 police vehicles.The proposed graphic the council approved in February was a more muted version of the design that now appears on the cars."Clearly, the way it looks on the car is not what anyone expected it to look like," Dicterow said. LITTLETON, Colo. — In one Colorado neighborhood, life is quiet, which makes what happened last Sunday hard to understand for many residents.A man named Scott Smith was arrested after claiming that his wife, Kanokwan Smith, tried to kill him with a butcher knife in their Littleton home. In an affidavit detailing the incident, he said he had no choice but to shoot and kill her. As of Sunday evening, Scott had not been charged in connection to the case and he is not in custody.For neighbor Dominique Naylor, who has known Kanokwan for more than a decade, the pain is unbearable. She said she was a hard worker and juggled three jobs."She’ll never be able to wrap her arms around her little girl again and he shouldn’t have that right," Naylor said. "He shouldn’t be out and he shouldn’t be free."She said there's not a question in her mind that Scott killed her, and other neighbors and friends agree, adding that Scott "wasn't the kind of person you ever wanted to see (Kanokwan) with."She said anybody who knew her friend knows she wouldn't hurt a fly."It just seems so unfair to live in a world that doesn’t have her in it because she’s just so kind and worked so hard and how could anyone hurt her?"
