SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With a global pandemic and calls for social justice and equity, 2020 was a year full of change. We all were required to think quickly and adapt. It forced us to think long and hard about our values and what we can – and are called to – do, as organizations and individuals. What has the impact been on our careers and long-term plans? How have organizations changed how and who they hire? Are new skill sets in demand? Is there a more thoughtful approach to diversity and inclusion? And what about our young people – are they rethinking their plans, and what they imagine for their lives and careers? Our featured speakers this week include executive coach Azadeh Davari, executive recruiter Trevor Blair, and Reality Changers CEO Tamara Craver. The conversation will be moderated by LEAD Vice President Elizabeth Fitzsimons.WHEN: December 9 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pmJOIN VIA ZOOM: https://sdchamber.org/event/webinar-series-leading-in-a-new-reality-7/WATCH ON FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/ABC10News/ 1025

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two guided-missile destroyers were simultaneously dry docked at a Barrio Logan shipyard Wednesday. The USS Stethem and USS Decatur were lifted together inside the BAE Systems’ “Pride of California” dry dock. The dry-dock is 950 feet long, 160 feet wide and has a lifting capacity of 55,000 tons. The destroyers each are 505-feet-long and displace about 9,000 tons, according to BAE Systems. Crews will conduct repairs on the ships’ hulls, internal ballast and storage tanks, ventilation, propulsion and engineering systems, and living spaces. The ships should be re-floated by April 2020, BAE systems reports. 636

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wherever a Topgolf is built in San Diego, it's bound to tee-up some criticism. But as it stands, a potential East Harbor Island location facing golfers toward the downtown skyline may not end up being an option. The Board of Port Commissioners decided to delay a decision earlier this month on entering an exclusive negotiation agreement with Topgolf.RELATED: Gaslamp Quarter thoroughfare may become a promenadeThe Port directed staff to begin mapping out an agreement with Topgolf late last year. East Harbor Island was floated as a potential location at the time. But an agreed upon location must be chosen first before the negotiation starts.During the Feb. 11 meeting, commissioners were presented a study on developing the Harbor Island site and how Topgolf could work into that plan. Three diagrams showed the site's possibilities, with or without Topgolf:A "phase one" diagram included a potential Topgolf plus a 400-space parking lot and 500-room hotel and parking structure on the east side of the island. The "phase two" rendering kept Topgolf and the east-end hotel, but added a hotel development to the facility's west side that could have a shared parking structure with Topgolf. The final diagram depicted three hotel developments on the East Harbor Island land, without Topgolf. All the diagrams were meant to be illustrative of potential ideas of the site, not an official plan. RELATED: 1,200 housing units proposed for old Carmel Mountain Ranch golf courseWhen it comes to the East Harbor Island site, commissioners were not settled on an absolute plan after the presentation."I don't know that I'm there with this particular use on this site," Commissioner Rafael Castellanos said, siding for more ideas that include lower-cost entertainment like parks and restaurants. "I'm just not feeling it ... I just feel that it's an expensive use. It's a lot of land.""It seems to me we have one decision or one issue we need to discuss, which is do we want to have Topgolf in this location," said chair Anne Moore. "Quite frankly, I feel I can be convinced either way."Other commissioners shared in the idea that while Topgolf would be exciting for the area, it may not be the best use of the land.RELATED: Poway bowling alley to close in latest big change to busy corridorBefore deciding, the board requested more information on Topgolf's revenue, ways to reduce the parking area, and other ideas for the East Harbor Island site. A followup vote on whether or not to enter the agreement with Topgolf was not immediately scheduled. 2566

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Too many people are on the waiting list for a second chance at life.San Diego's organ donation group, Lifesharing, says the city and country are facing an organ shortage. In San Diego alone more than 2,000 people are on the waiting list. "There's never going to be enough organs but more people need to talk about organ donation so there can be more organs," said Lisa Stocks, Lifesharing Executive Director. On Friday, transplant recipients gathered to raise awareness about the issue and celebrate their new birthdays made possible because of organ donation.People can register to become donors on the Lifesharing website or at the DMV.You can also become a living donor by giving someone one of your kidneys. 742

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Whether you're into cars, fashion, history, or current events, you could find it in a magazine at Paras News. Now the beloved North Park newsstand is closing down after 70 years."For a lot of people, they're here every day. It's their mainstay," said Ken Gabbara, owner of Paras News for the last 11 years. Health concerns are just one of the reasons he's letting the iconic shop go. RELATED: Several popular San Diego restaurants to close after CEO accused in 0 million fraud scheme"The Internet has worn us down because they're bigger and stronger than us. You can't compete with something they give away for free for the most part," said Gabbara. At one time, they sold over 4,000 types of magazines, but with less published nowadays, that number dropped to 2,500.Longtime customers are sad to see the neighborhood establishment go. "It's going to be missed, it's really going to be missed," said Sharon Maynard, a customer of 35 years.Maynard fell in love with the literary and poetry magazines. "Now they just go online, but for me, there's nothing better than having it in your hand in print," said Maynard. Also sad to see the newsstand go is manager Kent Snyder, who's worked at Paras for 33 years. RELATED: Restaurant closures highlight industry struggles in San Diego"We made an effort to bring stuff into the store that other places don't carry, when they asked for it I ordered it," Snyder.Employees invite the community to buy one more magazine, so they have something of Paras News to hold onto. "We're one of a kind," said Gabbara. Paras News will remain open until the end of December. 1630
