ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here on Monday that his country attaches great importance to its development of relations with Ethiopia.     "My current visit to Ethiopia is aimed at bringing the existing all-round cooperative partnership to a new level and injecting new life into the traditional friendship between the two sides," said Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC). We are also happy to see that Ethiopia has become an example of how to meet the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ."     "I yesterday had very good talks separately with Teshome Toga, speaker of Ethiopian Council of People's Representatives, and Speaker of Ethiopian Federal Council Degefi Bula, reaching many important consensuses," said the Chinese top legislator.     During his talks with the two Ethiopian speakers, the two sides agreed to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two countries' legislatures as part of their efforts to push for improvement of people-to-people friendship, strengthening mutual political trust and promoting mutual benefit in economic cooperation, according to Wu.     Wu is on a five-African nation tour. Ethiopia is the third leg of his two-week-long visit to Africa.     For his part, Ethiopian President Girma said his country is satisfied with the better relations with China.     The president said he is very happy with China's decision to set up an agricultural technology demonstration center in Ethiopia.     He believed the demonstration center is conducive to furthering the agricultural cooperation between Ethiopia and China, improving Ethiopia's agricultural development level and helping the country's efforts to reduce poverty.     During the talks, Wu appreciated Ethiopia's commitment to the one-China policy. Wu pledged that China will speed up the construction of the demonstration center, which helps deepen the realistic cooperation in areas like farming.

TAIPEI, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) honorary chairman Lien Chan said Tuesday that the new agreements between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan "earn a real applause" and could benefit both sides.     Lien held a banquet in Taipei to welcome the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) president Chen Yunlin and his delegation.     "From a historical perspective, Chen's visit realizes a decade-old wish of President Wang Daohan and Chairman Koo Chen-fu, announces the establishment of an institutionalized consultation channel, and strengthens the base of cross-Straits mutual development and mutual benefits, " Lien said in his address.     In April 1993, late ARATS President Wang and Koo, late chairman of Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), held a historic "Wang-Koo meeting" in Singapore. It was the first public meeting between leaders of the two organizations.     Lien said Chen's current visit also symbolized a great step toward establishing mutual trust and achieving a win-win situation.     Chen and SEF chairman Chiang Pin-kung signed agreements on direct shipping and flights, postal services and food safety during their first summit in Taipei on Tuesday.     The agreements were expected to end a situation that has prevailed since 1949, which required air and sea movements between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan to go through a third place. The Taiwan side has made positive efforts," he said.     Three of the four deals signed on Tuesday concerned cross-Straits issues of "three direct links" of shipping, flights and postal services, which was "good news" for compatriots on both sides, Chen said.     "The future will tell that it is a right decision which would bring benefits to people on both sides," he said, adding the result would also comfort Wang and Koo who had passed away.     The ARATS and SEF would "bravely move on with steadier steps" so as to open a new era of peaceful development across the Straits, Chen said.     Taiwan's mainland affairs department chief Lai Shin-yuan said when meeting with Chen that "the mainland and Taiwan could solve misunderstandings step by step so long as the two sides could tolerate and understand each other".     She said the two high-level meetings between the two organizations in less than five months showed their strong willingness in shelving disputes, facing reality and vigorously improving ties.

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, or Cabinet, agreed in an executive meeting on Wednesday to speed up the reform and development of the inland Chongqing municipality.     China has four municipalities: Beijing, Tianjin in the north, Shanghai in the east, and Chongqing in the southwest.     "Local authorities are required to accelerate the overall development of rural and urban areas and promote environmental protection and natural resources conservation, to turn Chongqing into an important growth pole in western region," according to the meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.     Local governments should help people in the Three Gorges area to develop local pillar industries, modern agriculture and improve rural production and living conditions, according to the meeting.     The city should also step up construction of a new district in its north and a newly-approved bonded zone and carry out regional economic cooperation.

   KUWAIT CITY, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang arrived here Saturday evening on a four-day official visit.     Li said in a statement delivered at the airport that he is delighted to pay an official visit to Kuwait, noting that the relationship between China and Kuwait, especially in the fields of trade, energy, finance and culture, has witnessed remarkable growth since the two forged diplomatic relations in 1971. BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki exchanged views over the phone Friday on promoting further development of bilateral relations in 2009 and international and regional issues of common concern.     On the situation in the Gaza Strip, Yang said China is seriously concerned and deeply worried about the grave humanitarian crisis caused by the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.     China has made unremitting efforts to promote adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a relevant resolution on Gaza, Yang said.     He said China welcomes and supports U.N. Security Council Resolution 1860 and urges all the parties concerned to fully honor the resolution, cease fire immediately, ensure smooth operation of humanitarian assistance and promote an early relaxation of the humanitarian crisis taking place in Gaza.     China has always proposed that the issue of Palestine be resolved through political negotiation on the basis of related U.N. resolutions, the "Land for Peace" principle and the Arab Peace Initiative, he added.
