Doctors are seeing more children with an illness that can look a lot like the flu or cold. It's known as RSV. It stands for respiratory syncytial virus. It comes with the typical runny nose, cough and congestion we see in the wintertime. Adults can usually get over RSV without a problem. But it can be a lot more severe for young children.“From a newborn to a 3- or 4-year-aged child, and they go to a daycare or they're exposed to other kids who have a runny nose, cough or congestion. These kids can fall sicker much more, and will have more respiratory distress and dehydration than kids who are older,” says Dr. Purva Grover with Cleveland Clinic. Respiratory distress and dehydration are what makes RSV different from the typical cold. Doctors say some of the signs include shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Parents may be able to tell this is happening in a child if they're heavily breathing from both their nose and chest, as well as grunting noises. It's important that families see a doctor before this becomes respiratory failure. There isn't a vaccine specifically for RSV. But some doctors say they've been able to treat it with other vaccines. “There is a vaccine which is actually an antibody treatment that we give to the most vulnerable premature infants, those that are in their first year of life and were born very prematurely,” says Dr. James Gaensbauer, a pediatrics and infectious disease specialist at Denver Health. “But it's not an ideal thing, you have to give a shot every month for every five months that is typically the season.” Doctors can also do other things to treat the symptoms, like giving kids extra oxygen.RSV usually lasts about two weeks. 1707

Message from Dr. Amie: Working on your self esteem is crucial. Studies show that low self esteem can lead to poor relationships, addiction issues and more. This is something that you have the ability to change and take action with. When we learn to love ourselves, we strive for a better life—a happier relationship, a more fulfilling career or recovery from addiction. But changing the deep-rooted feelings we have about ourselves isn't easy. Seeking a therapist to learn skills to combat negative thoughts is helpful. The skill is to challenge and adjust these negative thoughts into more positive ones. Learning to value and care for your mind and body through a healthy lifestyle is important. Healthy eating, exercise and meditation can be the first steps in reclaiming physical and emotional confidence. Fully engaging with those we love is important. Feeling loved and supported (and being able to offer love and support in return) is a wonderful way to start increasing self-esteem. If you don't have any immediate friends or family then consider joining a support group or even volunteering. Helping others and focusing on them has proven to increase positive thoughts and improve mental health. #mentalhealth #confidence #selfesteem #therapy #therapist #dramie #dramieharwick #amieharwick #positivethoughts #coping #anxiety #depression 1361

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The varsity soccer players with Burlington High School are more than just a team. They’ve become advocates for all women in achieving equal pay. “We were inspired by the U.S. Women’s National Team and their lawsuit for equal pay," high school senior Maia Vota said. "And just knowing that when we’re older that could be us making less pay for equal work." The idea of making less money than their male counterparts didn’t sit well with them. So they decided to be a part of the movement for change and wore 538

More than two years ago, students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School turned their grief and anguish into activism after their school tragedy. Many of those students who were part of that movement are voting in their first presidential election."I was very proud to vote," said Buchwald.Buchwald and Hibshman are now Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School alumni. They were juniors in 2018 when a gunman opened fire in Building 12 at the school, killing 17 people."[The shooting] still brings moments of fear and sadness back," said Hibshman. After the Parkland school shooting in 2018, Zach Hibshman and Adam Buchwald started the group "Parents Promise to Kids" to push for stricter gun laws. "Before the shooting, this wouldn't be part of my everyday life. I wouldn’t be an activist. I'd be a normal kid doing my homework and studying for the ACT," Zach said more than two years ago. They pushed to bring about change in the wake of tragedy, starting the group "Parents Promise to Kids."The movement called on people to sign a contract pledging to vote for politicians who support stricter gun laws."[The group] exploded across the country, and we got so many signatures," said Buchwald. But something was missing at the time leading up to the midterm-elections nearly two years ago. They were too young to vote."That was one of the things Adam and I so desperately wanted to do," said Hibshman. "The fact that we couldn't share our thoughts through the form of a ballot, after we went through all that, was pretty frustrating."Hibshman and Buchwald are now sophomores at the University of Florida and eligible to vote. The memory of the 17 people killed at their former school is on their minds as they cast their ballots."Definitely going to think about gun control," said Hibshman."The topic of gun control is extremely important, but so is COVID," said Buchwald. Finally, they can make their voices heard on a ballot.Buchwald has now started a new movement with his brother, Josh, called "Promise to Humanity." They ask people to sign a contract, pledging to wear a mask, and practice social distancing during the pandemic. This article was written by Alex Hagan for WPTV. 2228

Animal shelters across the country are taking part in a nationwide study that's giving animal lovers the chance to hang out with a dog.Participant Moira Hopkins loves a good happy hour. However, instead of getting a drink, Hopkins is picking up a dog at the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, D.C. She picks up a dog named Jackie, who is part of the shelter’s happy hour program. It allows volunteers to take dogs out of the shelter and hang out with them for a few hours to let the dogs escape from the stress of that environment. “You just sort of see the tension just dissipate,” Hopkins says. “A great happy is when they suddenly end up taking a long, long nap because they don't get good sleep in a shelter because it's noisy and chaotic.” The shelter is taking part in a national study by Arizona State University to examine how getting out of a shelter, even for just a few hours, can affect dogs. Workers at the Humane Rescue Alliance say they've seen how a short getaway can help lower stress levels and even make dogs more adoptable. “When dogs appear less stressed to a potential adopter, that makes adopters want to meet them because they're calm and they're lying in their den, rather than jumping around and barking and acting all stressed out,” says Jennah Billeter, who works at the shelter. The ultimate goal is for these happy hours to lead to happy outcomes. “It has really, really good outcomes for both the human and for the dog, because the human gets to have the love of a dog and enjoy them and sometimes maybe even end up adopting them, because they fall in love with them on a happy hour,” Hopkins says. For more information, visit the 1682
