EL CENTRO, Calif. (KGTV) - Two earthquakes shook the Imperial County city of El Centro Monday night. The first quake, which measured a 4.0 magnitude, was 1 kilometer east-northeast of the city at 6:13 p.m. The second quake was a 3.7 about 30 seconds later.A check of the U.S. Geological Survey's 'Did You Feel It' map showed shaking was reported in Calexico, about 12 miles away, and Yuma, Arizona.RELATED: Is there such a thing as earthquake weather? The quakes were "very quick", said an El Centro hotel clerk who did not wish to be identified.A server at Denny's said the shaking made his customers stand up out of concern, but no one was hurt. While no major damage has been reported, the quakes were strong enough to shake overhead lights and topple monitors on display at Staples, according to clerk Krosby Rider. 825

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Starting Monday morning, Cal Fire San Diego is suspending all burn permits for outdoor residential burning. The announcement comes after a dry winter and warming temperatures dried out the annual grass crop. The suspension bans residential outdoor burning of landscape debris like branches and leaves.“We are reminding the public that this last winter was drier than last year,” said Chief Tony Mecham, Cal Fire San Diego/San Diego County Fire Chief. “The abundant dry grass will only serve as a fuse to the heavier vegetation that still covers our local open spaces.”RELATED: Volcan Mountain brush fire preventing officials from reaching reported crash siteSince the beginning of January, Cal Fire has responded to 920 wildfires across the state.Mecham is also asking residents to ensure they are prepared for wildfires by maintaining a minimum of 100 feet of defensible space around homes and buildings.“The importance of defensible space cannot be over-emphasized, but just as important is that residents conduct their clearance activities in a safe and responsible manner," Mecham said. “This includes using the proper tools and limiting clearance activities to the early morning hours when the humidity is up and the temperatures are down.”RELATED: Firefighter battling Barrio Logan fire shocked by electrified fenceBelow are some tips to help prepare homes and property: 1423

Earth sweltered to a record hot September last month, with U.S. climate officials saying there’s nearly a two-to-one chance that 2020 will end up as the globe’s hottest year on record.Boosted by human-caused climate change, global temperatures averaged 60.75 degrees (15.97 Celsius) last month, edging out 2015 and 2016 for the hottest September in 141 years of recordkeeping, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Wednesday. That’s 1.75 degrees (0.97 degrees Celsius) above the 20th century average. This record was driven by high heat in Europe, Northern Asia, Russia and much of the Southern Hemisphere, said NOAA climatologist Ahira Sanchez-Lugo. California and Oregon had their hottest Septembers on record.Earth has had 44 straight Septembers where it has been warmer than the 20th century average and 429 straight months without a cooler than normal month, according to NOAA. The hottest seven Septembers on record have been the last seven. That means “that no millennial or even parts of Gen-X has lived through a cooler than normal September,” said North Carolina state climatologist Kathie Dello, herself a millennial. What’s happening is a combination of global warming from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas and natural variability, Sanchez-Lugo said. But the biggest factor is the human-caused warming, she and Dello said. The globe set this record despite a La Nina, which is a cooling of parts of the central Pacific that changes weather patterns and usually slightly lowers temperatures.“A La Nina is no match for how much we’re warming the planet,” Dello said. The first nine months of 2020 are the second warmest on record, a shade behind 2016 when there was a strong warming El Nino. But Sanchez-Lugo said her office’s calculations show that there’s a 64.7% chance that 2020 will pass 2016 in the last three months to take the title as the warmest year on record. And if it doesn’t make it, she said it’ll easily be in the top three, probably top two.“We’re catching up” to 2016, Sanchez-Lugo said. “It’s a very tight race.”With the climate trend, heat records that looked like it would take many years to break get passed quicker, said Colorado University weather data scientist Sam Lillo.___Follow AP’s climate coverage at https://www.apnews.com/Climate___Follow Seth Borenstein on Twitter at @borenbears .___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education.
