Former President Barack Obama made a thinly veiled jab at President Donald Trump on Friday evening, saying it was wrong to use a position of power for attacking others as "enemies of the people and then suddenly pretending that you're concerned about civility.""I would like to think that everybody in America would think it's wrong to spend all your time from a position of power vilifying people, questioning their patriotism, calling them enemies of the people and then suddenly pretending that you're concerned about civility," he told a cheering crowd.Trump has repeatedly called the media "fake news" and "the enemy of the people." Following the discovery of multiple packages sent to people whom the President has spoken against as political enemies, as well as a suspicious package in CNN's New York bureau at the Time Warner Center on Wednesday, Trump tweeted Thursday that "a very big part of the Anger we see today in our society is caused by the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the Mainstream Media that I refer to as Fake News." 1061

For years, the White House Correspondents Association has pushed for access to the White House grounds for reporters and news media. On Wednesday, the WHCA told its members to stay away. The White House Correspondents Association’s recommendation came as three of its members are recovering from coronavirus infections. There have also been a number of infections among White House press staffers, including press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. In response to the cluster of coronavirus cases, the WHCA said that only a handful of journalists should work from the White House grounds. The association says other than reporters working at the White House as part of the “pool” as well as those with enclosed offices should refrain from working inside the White House. Pool correspondents are the small, rotating group of reporters who share reports to the rest of the media.“We would also strongly encourage all journalists to avoid working from the White House grounds entirely if it can be avoided,” WHCA chair Zeke Miller said.Miller said that the organization has been pushing for the White House to help with contact tracing.“We have communicated to the White House that, as a press corps, we would like more information to evaluate our own potential exposure,” Miller said. “We have pressed for them to provide updates on known and suspected infections so that reporters can as soon as possible know if they and their families have been put at risk. The administration, citing privacy concerns, has not provided additional details.”Miller said that protocols by White House journalists have helped minimize spread of the virus among its members.“While we are awaiting additional test results for some members, it appears clear that our safe behavior has helped contain this virus,” he said. “We haven’t just been lucky, we have followed science and we have been vigilant.” 1880

First lady Melania Trump said that she has "much more important things" to focus on than the alleged infidelities of her husband, President Donald Trump."It is not concern and focus of mine. I'm a mother and a first lady, and I have much more important things to think about and to do. I know people like to speculate and media like to speculate about our marriage," the intensely private first lady told ABC News in a taped interview last week during her first solo foreign trip.Asked if she's been hurt by the allegations, Trump, after a brief pause, said, "It's not always pleasant, of course, but I know what is right and what is wrong and what is true or not true."Asked by ABC News if they still have a good marriage and if she loves her husband, the first lady replied, "Yes, we are fine." 804

Former Obama administration official and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro said he is "likely" to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020."I'm likely to do it. I have a strong vision for the country. I believe that our country's going in the wrong direction and that it needs new leadership. I'll make a final decision after November, but I'm inclined to do it," Castro said in an interview published by Rolling Stone on Tuesday.Castro, who was the secretary of housing and urban development during the Obama administration, has stoked speculation about his presidential ambitions in a series of public comments and with increasingly frequent travel to presidential primary states. He had been rumored to be a contender for the vice presidential spot on the 2016 Democratic ticket.Over the weekend, the Texas Democrat was in Iowa campaigning for J.D. Scholten, a candidate for Iowa's 4th Congressional District. It was Castro's second trip to the state since August"You know, I have to say, I felt at home coming in, walking in," Castro told a crowd at the event. In late July, Castro's twin brother, Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas, told CBS that his brother has "definitely thought about it," referring to a presidential bid.Speaking to Rolling Stone, Julian Castro expressed some hesitation about a 2020 bid, citing his family, but he also began articulating the basis of a run.He was also asked about a potentially bruising Democratic primary fight amid signs that key contenders like Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren are preparing to declare their own presidential ambitions."It's going to be cathartic for the party to go through a process where everybody gets to show what they've got. Where you have debates with over a dozen people and every wing of the party is represented," Castro said.He continued, "We need to go through that to get over 2016, and we're going to come out of the 2020 primary, I'm convinced, in a much stronger position. The nominee will be stronger for it and be better prepared to win in November of 2020. I'm hopeful, and I think realistically hopeful, about what this very contested, long, drawn-out process is going to mean. Most of the time a party wants to avoid that kind of process, but in this case, that's our salvation." 2285

Former Vice President Joe Biden formally accepted the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday from Wilmington, Delaware, on the final night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention. At age 77, Biden became the oldest major party nominee for president.Biden capped off a four-night pitch to Americans that Democrats have a broad coalition ready to take over the White House."But while I will be a Democratic candidate, I will be an American president,” Biden said as he accepted the nomination. “I'll work hard for those who didn't support me, as hard for them as I did for those who did vote for me. That's the job of a president, to represent all of us not just our base or our party. This is not a partisan moment. This must be an American moment."In making his case for the presidency, Biden called the 2020 election a “life-changing election.”This will determine what America is going to look like for a long, long time," Biden said. "Character is on the ballot. Compassion is on a ballot. Decency. Science. Democracy. They're all on the ballot, who we are as a nation, what we stand for, most importantly, who we want to be, that's all on the ballot."The sights of this year’s convention stood in stark contrast from past conventions. There was no balloon drop. Delegates remained home.Instead, moments after Biden finished his speech to a largely empty room, he and running mate Kamala Harris stepped outside, wearing masks, to a crowd of people in their vehicles who watched the speech like it was a drive-in movie.DNC takes a comedic turnSeinfeld actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus emceed Thursday’s portion of the convention, and attempted to add more comedy than most convention viewers are accustomed to.Her jokes often were pointed at the expense of President Donald Trump. Trump in the past has not reacted well to jokes at his expense, once threatening to sue “Saturday Night Live” for a skit featuring a parody of him.A few of the jokes Louis-Dreyfus told throughout the evening:"Joe Biden not only knows how to read, but also he reads everything"“30330 (a number to text the Biden campaign to offer support). That would be the president's golf score if he didn't cheat. OK, look. I'll admit that was a little nasty. But we all know he's a cheater. And I'm proud to be a nasty, nasty woman.""Just remember. Joe Biden goes to church so regularly that he doesn't even need tear gas and a bunch of federalized troops to help him get there."John Lewis rememberedRep. John Lewis was remembered by Democrats on Thursday following his death last month. The civil rights leader who represented Georgia died on July 17.Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who was reportedly considered to be Biden’s running mate, stressed the importance of voting after civil rights leaders like Lewis marched for that right.“We have cried out for justice, we have gathered in our streets to demand change, and now, we must pass on the gift John Lewis sacrificed to give us, we must register and we must vote,” Lance Bottoms said.Trump silentWhile President Donald Trump sent several all caps tweets on Wednesday in response to the convention, the president had not tweeted anything about the DNC as of when the convention ended. He did, however, send a single tweet as Biden wrapped up."In 47 years, Joe did none of the things of which he now speaks. He will never change, just words," he said. Trump will get his turn at the microphone next week as the Republicans hold their convention starting Monday. 3504
