SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Rain, wind, and cooler temperatures are in the forecast this weekend. San Diego businesses operating outdoors for the pandemic are making plans to stay dry.Since the pandemic started businesses in San Diego have had to get creative to stay afloat.Arthur Boia started PB Yogs as a way for yoga instructors to safely continue classes outdoors.“The thing with us is we’re yogi’s so we’re very flexible,” said Boia. “Whatever it takes.”They hold daily classes at Hospitality Point in Mission Bay where they implement temperature checks and social distancing.Boia says outdoor classes have been working out well under San Diego sunshine, but rain this weekend might pose some challenges.“If for some reason it starts raining and we have to cancel a class we’ll cancel it,” said Boia. “But as soon as it clears up, we’re gonna run right back out here and do yoga.”With rainy season underway, he’s looking for other ways to keep the yoga flowing.“When I was thinking of a tent, I was thinking to close off the back area so you can protect from the wind a little bit, but we also want to have good airflow for COVID reasons. As for the rain, that’s just something we’re gonna have to go by day-by-day," Boia said.Belmont Park is another business with outdoor operations.“We have our new go-kart track, our rock climbing wall, zip line, mini golf,” said Senior Marketing Manager Daniela Bower.The Belmont Park Harvest Walk event runs every Saturday through Nov. 14. Bower says they may have to cancel this weekend.“Even just for safety we can’t operate a lot of things when it’s raining,” said Bower.She adds after a year like 2020, wet weather will just add insult to injury.“It’s already been a struggle for us to be able to open in the first place, so it definitely kind of stings a little bit when we have to close for other reasons,” said Bower.Bower says they’ll make the call Friday afternoon on whether or not to cancel Saturday’s event.The City of San Diego is offering free sandbags in each City Council District. Residents just need to bring identification to receive up to 10 empty sandbags. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria says the city's convention center shelter for the homeless will be funded through at least the first month of 2021.Gloria said in a release that he's directing staff to provide funding using money previously slated for shelter operations in November and December that wasn't spent due to cost-saving measures and other factors, as well as a state grant specifically for funding homelessness-related services."I am committed to protecting our homeless neighbors from COVID-19 while keeping a focus on connecting them to long-term housing," Gloria said. "A temporary extension for this shelter will allow us to serve the greatest number of people in need with daily health screenings and other COVID protections."RELATED: New questions over cost of convention center shelterCOVID-19 cases surge at Convention Center shelterGloria added that he's proposing the city authorize more funding through March 2021, with plans to continue helping those at the shelter transition into permanent housing or into another shelter by that time.Those financial plans could be discussed by the City Council in January.The city's downtown convention center shelter began in April to shelter hundreds of people experiencing homelessness as the coronavirus pandemic began. The shelter has seen a total of 190 positive tests, including 170 residents and 20 volunteers or staff members, according to the city.Those residents who test positive are immediately moved from the shelter to an off-site hotel managed by the county for public health use. 2326

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police homicide detectives investigated Monday the death of a woman whose body was discovered by her sister.Officers were called to the home in the 4000 block of Van Dyke Ave. between Polk and University Avenues just before 9 a.m., police said.A woman went to the home to find her sister, who she had not seen since Saturday. When there was no answer at the condominium, the sister contacted the landlord.Upon entry, the woman found her 36-year-old sister lying dead on the floor.Family has identified the victim as Muna Kuri. San Diego Police say her death was a homicide. 611

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in a senior mobile home park in Oceanside are worried about speeding drivers after two ducks were hit and killed Wednesday. Neighbors told 10News a mom, dad and baby duck were crossing the road around 5 a.m. when a newspaper delivery driver ran them over.Several residents reported that the driver responsible delivers the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper and regularly speeds on their narrow roads.The UT told 10News their carriers are employed by a separate company but issued the following statement: "We have learned that a carrier from an independent distributor, who delivers The San Diego Union-Tribune, may have been involved in an auto collision involving a family of ducks. Safety is a priority for us and we support safe and respectful work practices among the vendors with whom we do business. We share the concerns of the residents and encourage the distributor to review the incident and address any unsafe practices." 970

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Researchers at UC San Diego Health say they can make a COVID-19 contact tracing app for smartphones but the technology may be getting pushback because of privacy concerns.On Tuesday, ABC10 News spoke to UC San Diego Health Chief Information Officer Dr. Christopher Longhurst about the app that he's offered to develop and study for San Diego County."From a University of California stand point, we're comfortable endorsing this as an appropriate means of helping control this pandemic more quickly while preserving the privacy of our citizens," he told ABC10 News.He said the app would look a lot like Canada's app which was released last Friday. Using a tool created by Apple and Google, it produces random codes and uses Bluetooth to ping other users' phones and share those codes when two people are physically close to each other. "So, the idea is that if I were diagnosed with COVID-19, I would then be given a code [and voluntarily opt in to] put that code into my exposure notification app and that would let other people know who had been near me that they might have been exposed and should be tested," he added.ABC10 News asked Dr. Longhurst about what situations could make it more effective than using human contact tracers. "Contact tracing is a methodology that's been around for 50 years and we've used it for sexually transmitted infections and other outbreaks. It works really well when you're talking about who you might have been intimate with. It's much harder when you think about who you breathed air with. [Additionally], there's limits to being able to actually contact those folks," he responded.When asked about why the technology isn't being implemented in San Diego County, he told ABC10 News, "Our partners at San Diego County Public Health have been very enthusiastic about embracing this new technology but the Apple and Google API can only be used by state public health agencies so we're dependent on the state of California to approve moving this forward."Other countries have moved forward but the U.S. has been slower. Dr. Longhurst attributes that to privacy concerns, but said the program protects anonymity and doesn't track location. "We've really closely evaluated this technology and we believe that the privacy preserving goals have been met," he added.On Tuesday, San Diego County officials confirmed that it's the state of California's decision to go forward and added in part, "If there is an opportunity for the County to partner with the state in a pilot, we would be open to further discussions about this."The California Department of Public Health sent the following response to ABC10 News."The state’s contact tracing program isn’t using contact tracing smartphone technology. Contact tracing involves notifying people who have been in close contact with an infected person to prevent the disease from spreading to others, and most of that work can be done by phone, text, email and chat.We are aware of San Diego's interest in utilizing a contact tracing application. We continue to focus on standing up the manual contact tracing process (via phone, text, email and chat) and the data management tool that assists our contact tracing workforce." 3226
