SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A lawyer for the man who styled the hair of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says he believes she was set up when she went to a San Francisco salon that wasn't permitted to have indoor services because of the coronavirus pandemic. Pelosi is facing backlash after Fox News Channel aired footage showing the speaker walking through the salon without a mask on. But a lawyer for the stylist says the owner gave permission for the appointment and made “vitriolic and incendiary comments" about Pelosi. (KGTV) -- After being under a federally mandated quarantine at MCAS Miramar for two weeks, Steven and Michele Smith are finally heading home to Paradise, California."Tomorrow morning we're putting our bags on the other side of that door and we're heading on a bus to the airport. We're going to rent a car and drive 600 miles home," said Steven Smith in a Skype interview with 10News.The two would have been back home weeks ago after their planned cruise to Hawaii, but due to a coronavirus outbreak on the Grand Princess cruise ship they were on, they and all other passengers had to go into quarantine once their ship finally docked in Oakland."My sister is taking care of my birds, my daughter is taking care of my dog, and then my friend is taking care of our cat," said Michele Smith.The Smiths will complete their 14-day quarantine Tuesday and drive home Wednesday. Health and Human Services officials tell us nearly 50 people quarantined at Miramar left Tuesday, and the remaining 130 people will be discharged over the next two days. For nearly two weeks, their temperatures were checked twice a day. The Smiths mostly remained inside of a room at the Consolidated Bachelor Quarters on base, had food delivered three times a day, and only stepped outside occasionally."You can go out and walk outside, they have a fenced-in area that they keep us inside of," said Steven Smith.They were tested for COVID-19 and got their results back Monday."It was just a weird test, to have somebody shove something up your nose that far back into your nasal cavity," Steven Smith explained."But we tested negative!" added an excited Michele. "So, we are virus free 100 percent."They are thrilled to be heading home healthy and say their positive attitude and sense of humor helped get them through this unusual time.Michele leaves others just starting their quarantine with this advice, "I would recommend to all the people out there, now is not the time to bring up negative things or things that could create conflict, but just to love on each other, laugh and enjoy each other." 2101

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego. San Diego (KGTV)- For many people who live on a fixed income buying groceries may be a challenge. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A woman was drunk when she drove her large family off a Northern California cliff last month and her wife and several children had large amounts of a drug in their systems that can cause drowsiness, authorities said Friday.Police had previously said they believed the Hart family died in a suicide plunge from a scenic overlook. The crash happened just days after authorities in Washington state opened an investigation following allegations the children were being neglected.Preliminary toxicology tests found Jennifer Hart had an alcohol level of 0.102, said California Patrol Capt. Bruce Carpenter. California drivers are considered drunk with a level of 0.08 or higher.Toxicology tests also found that her wife Sarah Hart and two of their children had "a significant amount" of an ingredient commonly found in the allergy drug Benadryl, which can make people sleepy. Toxicology results for a third child killed are still pending, Carpenter said.Carpenter said none of the car's occupants were wearing seatbelts.Sarah and Jennifer Hart and their six adopted children were believed to be in the family's SUV when it plunged off a cliff in Mendocino County, more than 160 miles (250 kilometers) north of San Francisco.Authorities have said data from the vehicle's software suggested the crash was deliberate, though the California Highway Patrol has not concluded why the vehicle went off an ocean overlook on a rugged part of coastline. A specialized team of accident investigators is trying to figure that out with help from the FBI, Carpenter said."We believe that the Hart incident was in fact intentional," he said.Carpenter said the family stopped in the small town of Naselle, Washington, about 80 miles (128 kilometers) northwest of their Woodland, Washington, home, during their drive to the California cliff. But investigators are still trying to determine why they stopped in Naselle, which added an hour and a half to their trip, and whether they contacted anyone. Naselle is near U.S. Highway 101, a popular, scenic route along the coast.Five bodies were found March 26 near the small city of Mendocino, a few days after Washington state authorities began investigating the Harts for possible child neglect, but three of their children were not immediately recovered from the scene.Two more are missing and another body has been found but not identified.The 100-foot (31-meter) drop killed the women, both 39, and their children Markis Hart, 19; Jeremiah Hart, 14; and Abigail Hart, 14. Hannah Hart, 16; Devonte Hart, 15; and Sierra Hart, 12, have not been found.Devonte drew national attention after he was photographed in tears while hugging a white police officer during a 2014 protest.A neighbor of the Harts in Woodland, Washington, had filed a complaint, saying the children were apparently being deprived of food as punishment.Long before the crash, Sarah Hart pleaded guilty in 2011 to a domestic assault charge in Minnesota over what she said was a spanking given to one of her children.And authorities have said social services officials in Oregon contacted the West Linn Police Department about the family in 2013 while they were living in the area. Alexandra Argyropoulos, who told The Associated Press previously that she contacted Oregon child welfare officials, said in an email Friday that Jennifer Hart ran the household "like a regimented boot camp."Argyropoulos wrote that as a family friend she initially thought Jennifer Hart was a loving mother. But after spending two weeks with the family Argyropoulos said she noticed kindness, love and respect for the children was largely absent.
