BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- China is launching its sixth national population census Monday, ten years after the last one, as the world's most populous nation seeks a clearer and up-to-date picture of its population.From Nov. 1 to Nov. 10, more than six million census takers are to go door to door and visit over 400 million households across the country, recording family information and finishing the first stage of the census.In order to have more accurate figures, from Nov. 11 to Nov. 30, another round of census-taking will be launched, though on the smaller scale of 1/10000 of the population, officials with the country's National Bureau of Statistics said.Statistics will be calculated in December, with the key data scheduled to be released by the end of April 2011, sources said.In the last census, China's population stood at 1.29533 billion.

NANJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday urged China to keep moving down the path of sustainable development and put greater emphasis on social equity and environmental sustainability.Addressing students of Nanjing University in east China's Jiangsu Province, Ban said as the world's most populous country with the fastest growing economy, China has become the world's largest manufacturer and exporter but also the greatest emitter of greenhouse gases."Seven of the world's 10 most-polluted cities are in China. Your environmental footprint is growing daily," Ban said, adding that fortunately China is beginning to fight the side-effects of prosperity -- climate change and environmental degradation -- besides poverty.The UN chief noted that many of these development problems were raised during discussions as Chinese leaders recently met to draw the 12th Five-Year Plan for economic and social development of the country from 2010 to 2015.Ban applauded the Chinese government's goal of leading the country into an all-around Xiaokang society, or well-off society, by 2020 and said making Xiaokang a reality will, perhaps, ultimately become China's "great export -- its gift to humankind.""You already have a concept for it... XIAMEN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's outbound direct investment (ODI) rose 1.1 percent year on year to 56.53 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, according to a government report issued Sunday.Non-financial ODI, which accounts for 84.5 percent of the total, stood at 47.8 billion U.S. dollars last year, up 14.2 percent from one year earlier, while the country's overseas investment in financial sectors declined 37.9 percent to 8.7 billion U.S. dollars, according to a report jointly released by the Ministry of Commerce, the National Bureau of Statistics and the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.By the end of 2009, Chinese enterprises established 13,000 overseas companies in 177 countries, with combined assets topping 1 trillion U.S. dollars, according to the report.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Thursday issued the full text of Premier Wen Jiabao's explanation on a proposal that will play a crucial role in shaping the country's development over the next five years.The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's Proposal on Formulating the Twelfth Five-year Program (2011-2015) on National Economic and Social Development was adopted at the Fifth Plenum of the 17th CPC Central Committee that ended Oct. 18.Wen's explanation focused on five parts, including China's social and economic development over the past five years, the guiding principle and goals for development in next five years, major tasks in economic development, major tasks in improving social undertakings and people's livelihoods, and major tasks in deepening reform and opening-up.Wen made the explanation on Oct. 15 when the CPC Central Committee session began.The proposal stipulated scientific development as the theme of the 12th Five-year Program, said Wen, noting this is also the first time for a five-year program to include scientific development as its theme.The Scientific Outlook on Development shall be implemented in all sectors of reform and opening-up and the modernization drive, he said.According to Wen, the State Council will make the draft of the 12th Five-year Program based on the proposal. The draft will be submitted to the National People's Congress session next March for deliberation and approval.

TOKYO, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan highlighted Friday the importance of relations between Japan and China, saying it was essential to deepen the mutually beneficial relations.While Kan was explaining his concerns regarding China at the opening session of the Japanese Diet."As neighboring countries separated by a thin strip of water, Japan and China are of great importance to each other.
