URUMQI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has called for breakthroughs in the development of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region during his five-day inspection tour there.Breakthroughs should be achieved in efforts to resettle herdsmen, promote bilingual and vocational education, utilize natural resources, and develop industrial parks, said Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.Zhou told local officials to thoroughly carry out policies set by the central government to develop Xinjiang and strive for the improvement of well-being for the locals.Zhou traveled across the sprawling Xinjiang, about one sixth of China's territory, from Sept. 19 to 24. He visited rural households, schools, farms, a crude oil pipeline station at China-Kazakstan border, industrial zones, and army camps.

HANOI, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- The cooperation among China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) is an important part of East Asian cooperation, and the correct direction of the tripartite cooperation should be firmly kept from a strategic perspective, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Friday at a meeting of leaders of the three countries.The cooperation among China, Japan and the ROK, an important part of East Asian cooperation, has been developing soundly with the efforts of the three countries, Wen said when meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.The three countries should attach strategic importance to the cooperation among them and steer it in the right direction. BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The central parity rate of the yuan, China's currency Renminbi (RMB), jumped 181 basis points, or 0.27 percent, Friday to a new record high at 6.6830 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Friday's central parity rate beat the previous record of 6.6936 on Sept. 29.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Friday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by 2.12 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit.The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 9.2951 Friday, higher from 9.1329 on Sept. 30, the last trading day.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 8.1040 Friday, compared with 7.9999 on Sept. 30.The Chinese currency fell 61 basis points against the British pound with the central parity rate being set at 10.6079 from 10.6018 on the previous trading day.The central parity of RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of enquired prices from all market makers before the opening of the market in each business day.The central parity of RMB against the other five currencies is based on the central rate of RMB against the U.S. dollar of the same business day as well as the exchange rates of the five currencies against the U.S. dollar at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) of the same business day in the international foreign exchange market.

GUANGZHOU, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Police conducted a hostage rescue drill on Sunday in south China's Guangzhou City as authorities beefed up security about one month prior to the opening of the 2010 Asian Games.Police first practiced rescue operation simulating the bus hostage crisis in the Philippine capital about two months ago. Eight Hong Kong tourists were slain during an ill-prepared rescue by the Philippine police against a lone gunman who hijacked a tourist bus in Manila on Aug. 23.Police officers were not told of the time and location of the drill in advance to test the emergency response of the city's police forces, a senior police officer said.During the drill, a group of armed men "hijacked" a bus carrying athletes and gunned down security guards on their way out of the Asian Games Village. After "negotiations" failed, police quickly broke into the bus and seized the attackers.The second part of the drill involved in rescuing "hijacked" foreign athletes in a room in the Village.After finding the hijackers attempted to kill the hostages, the police stormed the room, overwhelming the attackers and freeing the hostages.Chinese authorities have activated over one hundred checkpoints on the roads and waterways linking areas to the hosting cities of the Games on Sunday.A total of 132 checkpoints, scattered in Guangdong Province and five neighboring regions, are responsible for screening people, vehicles and goods, officials with the Ministry of Public Security said.The 2010 Asian Games is scheduled to open on Nov. 12. The events will be held in four cities in Guangdong.

TOKYO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara said Tuesday that he will try hard to rebuild a "strategic, mutually beneficial relationship" with China.During a luncheon meeting at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan, Maehara said he will strive to mend ties with China as foreign minister.He also welcomed the agreement between Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Belgium Monday to resume talks between high-level officials of the two countries.Earlier in the day Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku expressed his hope for the improvement of Japan's relations with China."Promoting a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship and improving ties between Japan and China will be positive not only for the two countries but also for other Asian countries or countries around the world, especially for their economies," said Sengoku at a regular press conference in Tokyo.China-Japan relations have been soured recently after the Japanese Coast Guard illegally seized a Chinese fishing boat and detained the crew on Sept. 8 in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.Japanese authorities insisted on performing a so-called domestic judicial procedure against the crew despite strong protests from the Chinese government and public. The crew and the boat were released later.
