So all we could do is basically plaster ourselves against the wall and close our eyes and pray we didn't get hit because if we got hit, we would've been knocked down and trampled to death."She made it unscathed and headed back for her barn where she knew another horse was waiting. When she returned, she faced devastation."I'm still looking for a hose to try and put him out, like I can save him. I tried to get in my barn, but it was so hot, I was stepping over flames," she said. Marrs knew he was already dead. She described it as a horrible, guilt-filled moment. For months, she the memoriy stayed with her.Friday night, that memory was brought into the light, by the horse community. They honored hers and so many others' stories of sacrifice.Noting Martine Bellocq in particular. Bellocq suffered burns to more than 60 percent of her body trying to rescue horses from the Lilac Fire. Saturday, after the third race, Bellocq will be honored for her role in rescuing the horses. 1961

Cerah is an Indonesian word that means “bright.”Zoo staff say mom and baby are both doing well.Cerah is not yet available for public viewing; she’s spending time with mom behind the scenes to bond and rest. DENVER -- A dramatic spike in calls to the Colorado suicide prevention hotline could be tied, in part, to a popular song with a powerful message that is reaching a new group of people.Rocky Mountain Crisis Partners reports an almost 40-percent increase in Lifeline calls from June to October of 2017 (from 1,990 calls to 2,772), and they believe much of the increase can be credited to the rapper Logic's suicide prevention anthem “1-800-273-8255,” named after the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline."We see spikes for different reasons during the year, but this clearly was one we're pretty clear was triggered by the released of this song," said Bev Marquez, the CEO of Rocky Mountain Crisis Partners, which handles all the calls to that hotline number from Colorado area codes. "Because I'm a clinician and because I'm a CEO, I thought this is a great opportunity. And then I thought: staffing."In part, because of the increase in call volume, Marquez said, RMCP is increasing training and hiring 2.5 more positions in the next training group, going from 14 to 16.5.The song begins from the perspective of someone calling the number and saying that they "don't want to be alive" and follows that person from despair to hope. Counselors said the message was consistent with what they're hearing from the people who call in, and they credit the song with saving lives."I have one call that really stuck out to me. It was a 17-year-old who was having a lot of anxiety and had been in a crisis situation for a week," said Lindsey Breslin, a crisis line supervisor. "I said, 'What brought you to call today?' And he said, 'I've been listening to this song over and over again for the past week. And I decided today I should call in.' And we were able to get him the help he needed."The video for the popular song has more than 137 million views on YouTube.Counselors have said the message resonates with a new demographic that hasn't been targeted in the past, but is particularly vulnerable to suicide risks."I have noticed a lot of these Lifeline calls are specifically from teens and young adults," said Charissa Tvrdy, a lead clinician with Rocky Mountain Crisis Partners.  "Even when it first came out people were like I just heard it for the first time. I've been feeling this exact same way. I wasn't sure where to go, but now I know there is an option for me."With the spike in real calls, though, RMCP has also seen a spike in prank calls referencing the song, which they say has taken time from people who really need help."Colorado ranks 7th in the nation in terms of our suicide rates," said Marquez. DETROIT — A clash between Detroit police and protesters was caught on camera Sunday night.Video shared on Twitter shows a group of protesters marching near Waterman and Vernor Highway in Detroit. The peaceful demonstrators surrounded a police cruiser, which pulls forward and into a group of protesters.Some protesters jumped onto the hood of the vehicle as it pulled forward.Leo Alvarado, who was at a nearby gas station, witnessed the altercation."Just so happened to be getting out with my wife when we heard a bunch of screaming and turned around, and cops were plowing through the crowd or started to drive through the crowd," Alvarado said. "Craziness. I've never seen anything like that in my life. Hopefully never again have to see anything like that."Alvarado said a medic treated cuts and wounds that were on demonstrators' arms. Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson on Sunday conceded the Florida Senate race to Republican Gov. Rick Scott, ending his re-election bid after the completion of a statewide recount.Scott announced the concession in a statement, saying, "I just spoke with Senator Bill Nelson, who graciously conceded, and I thanked him for his years of public service."Nelson will make a statement at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, his campaign announced.The concession brings to conclusion a key Senate race that continued to be fought well after Election Day.The Senate race -- along with the governor's and state's race for agriculture commissioner -- went to a machine recount a week ago, but the recount did not do nearly enough for Nelson and further formalized Scott's more than 12,000-vote lead. The contest still fell within the .25% standard for a manual recount of overvotes and undervotes, however.Nelson conceded after the noon deadline for the manual recount, when all of Florida's 67 counties were required to submit their final vote totals to the secretary of state, meaning every vote deemed admissible by county canvassing boards and the courts had been officially counted.The results of the recount showed Scott with a vote lead of 10,033 over incumbent Nelson. Before the completion of the manual recount, Scott had a lead of 12,603 votes.Nelson's concession comes a day after Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum ended his campaign for governor by acknowledging that Republican Ron DeSantis had defeated him. The concession was a blow to Nelson, given the two top Democrats had figuratively stood together in calling for every legal vote cast in Florida to be counted.
