SHANGHAI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) - Swiss President Doris Leuthard Thursday said the rise in bilateral trade between Switzerland and China is a delightful surprise, as she seeks to expand economic cooperation with China through a free trade agreement.The trade increase was a surprise as it came during the economic crisis last year, Leuthard said.In the first six months of 2010, Swiss exports to China increased more than 30 percent and Chinese exports to Switzerland increased more than 16 percent.Total trade volume between the two countries during the period hit 6.2 billion Swiss Francs (5.86 billion U.S. dollars), she added.Leuthard said she is optimistic about the future of Sino-Swiss bilateral trade, as the two countries are working on a free trade agreement."We are ending feasibility study (for the agreement) so both sides know the market, the opportunities and the risks very well. It is very promising," she said.After the joint feasibility study, the two sides will enter the final stage ahead of the signing of the deal, she added.Talks on the free trade agreement began in 2007 when Leuthard, as head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, signed an agreement with then-Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai. The agreement recognized the full market status of China.Switzerland hopes to be the first European country to have a free trade agreement with China, Leuthard told Xinhua in an interview last year.China is Switzerland's second largest trade partner in Asia after Japan.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here Thursday that the country would push forward friendly relations with the Islamic world.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks when meeting with the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.Wu said China and all Islamic countries, as developing nations, enjoyed a long history of bilateral exchanges.China has always valued the traditional friendship with Islamic nations, Wu said, expressing appreciation for those countries' firm support on issues concerning China's core interests.China also has always supported Islamic nations on issues related to their concerns, and would work with them to increase exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, trade and culture, he noted.Wu also briefed Ihsanoglu on China's national and religious policies and on the social and economic situation of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.Ihsanoglu said friendly exchanges between the Islamic world and China not only accorded with fundamental interests of all parties, but also promoted human progress.The OIC was opposed to terrorism, separatism and extremism in any form, Ihsanoglu said, noting that the Islamic world would work with China to carry forward the traditional friendship and increase exchanges and cooperation.Besides Beijing, Ihsanoglu and his delegation would also visit the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Xinjiang.

PARIS, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Legislative bodies of China and France launched their regular parliamentary exchange mechanism on Thursday, vowing to further push forward the Sino-French comprehensive strategic partnership.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, jointly declared the beginning of the first meeting of Sino-French Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.Wu said the launch of the high-level meeting between the two legislative bodies signals the Sino-French parliamentary exchanges were promoted to a new stage.Accoyer said the regular parliamentary exchange mechanism could serve as an important platform for both nations to exchange views on mutual concerns and promote bilateral cooperation in politics, technology, new energy and environmental protection.Ahead of the meeting, Wu and Accoyer held talks on bilateral ties and parliamentary cooperation.Accoyer said France attached great importance to Wu's visit as Wu is the first Chinese top legislator that visited France in 13 years.France regards China as a strategic partner, expecting to expand all-round strategic cooperation with China, boost coordination on international issues, through joint efforts against global financial crisis, climate change and other challenges, he said.Wu said his ongoing visit to France is aimed to build a closer relation between the Chinese NPC and the French National Assembly. NANJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The population of China, the world's most populous country, is projected to reach 1.39 billion by the end of 2015, with those age 60 or over topping 200 million people, said Li Bin, head of the country's top population policy agency.Li, director of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, released these estimates Saturday during a speech at the annual conference of the China Population Association in Nanjing, capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province.The urban population is projected to be over 700 million over the next five years, for the first time exceeding the rural population, according to Li.She said the increase in the next five years would be based upon the nation's population momentum, which, according to her, would begin to decline after 2015.Population momentum is the tendency of a highly fertile population that has been rapidly increasing in size to continue to do so for decades after the onset of even a substantial decline in fertility.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded.To put a hold on the fast growth, the Chinese government adopted a one-child policy in the late 1970s. The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.However, during the next five years the development of China's population is expected to go through major transitional changes, Li said.China's first boom in its aging population is expected in the next five years, with roughly an average of eight million people turning 60 each year, 3.2 million more than occurred between 2006 and 2010, she said.In the coming five years, the ratio of the population aged 15 to 59 would peak and then slowly fall, whereas the population dependency ratio, a measure of the proportion of the population too young or too old to work, would rise for the first time after over 40 years of decreasing.In general, China would still retain the advantage of a plentiful labor supply and a relatively low population dependency ratio, she said.
